Course Policies Attendance & Critiques Attendance in class is critical as important material is presented and activities occur which cannot be replicated outside the classroom. Each student is granted five unexcused absences without penalty of a lowered grade; however, for each additional unexcused absence, the penalty will be a loss of 100 points or the lowering of an earned grade by one full grade point. For example: If a student accumulates 885 points but has 6 unexcused absences, the student's grade is lowered by 100 points which results in a final grade of 785 points. Two times of 15 minutes late or two times of 15 minutes leave early will be considered as one unexcused absence. The instructor's definition of an excused absence is an absence that is documented by a physician s note, participation in a university sponsored event, or death of immediate family member. Every attempt must be made to notify the instructor of your absence prior to the scheduled class time (minimum 6 hours prior). The instructor's definition of an unexcused absence is an absence for any other reason not defined above and without approval of the instructor. Tardiness of ten minutes or more for class will count as an unexcused absence for the day. 2

4 Critiques The critique process is fundamental to your learning in this course, and mimics industry scenarios. Students must be present for each critique. Various approaches (small group evaluation, peer evaluation, instructor evaluation etc.) will be taken to encourage participation and the use of a critical eye when evaluating your work and the work of others. The intention of the critique is to provide you feedback and to spark new ideas of how to improve the quality of your work. Students must be present for all critiques. In addition, you are expected to participate in critiques. There will be weekly mini-critiques as well as larger critiques for projects when they are due. The instructor may deduct points from your assignment/project grade if you do not actively participate in these critiques. There are multiple critique check-ins for each project. There are specific requirements for prelim and final critiques explained in detail on each rubric. Failure to meet these requirements will seriously affect your grade. Please note that final critiques for projects are critical. Students that are more than 15 minutes late for a final critique will be considered absent for the day and the project will not be accepted for grading. If there are extenuating circumstances that prohibit attendance at the critique the instructor (s) must be notified within 6 hours of the scheduled critique time. Blackboard The university Blackboard system will be utilized for recording grades and communicating information. Supplemental videos and demonstrations are posted to Blackboard to reinforce your learning; you are REQUIRED to view these videos.
