1 1 of 6 9/13/ :02 AM The Professional Institute for Educators ED*7611C*01 Megan McManus, mmcmanus@uarts.edu Course Description This studio painting course provides the opportunity to refine color theory and design concepts using oil and/or acrylic paints. In addition to applying color juxtaposition theory by Joseph Albers, examine the principles and elements of great composition to describe, emote and influence the human psyche. Concept and message predict how line, shape, pattern and rhythm perform. This course focuses on painting from direct observation with class critiques and can be applied in the classroom. Beginners and experienced artists are equally welcome. Course Objective Course Objective COURSE OBJECTIVES: The goals of this studio class are to learn the techniques and vocabulary of Painting and Color Theory while improving observational and visual communication skills. This is a very rigorous course that will include homework. Whether you are or become an abstract, realist, or surrealist painter, a graffiti, skateboard genre, or comic book artist, the techniques you learn in this class will contribute to your work. The painting technique I teach and use in my studio practice falls under the blanket term, traditional painting, (a.k.a. the Western European painting technique practiced during the Renaissance and Baroque periods.) You will learn how to build up the layers of a painting starting with value and eventually color and glazing. Basic Color Theory Concepts will be covered with hands-on color grid exercises. Course Assessment PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE SECTION GRADING: Grading of Assignments will be based on: completion, effort, improvement and when it is passed in. There will not be any assignments such as a mid-term or final painting that will outweigh other assignments. Course Grade will be based on ATTENDANCE, PARTICIPATION, and the average of the project grades. ATTENDANCE: Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class.

Students who withdraw from a course must do so in writing. Nonattendance does not constitute an official withdrawal. Educators taking courses for credit are required to complete assignments for evaluation outside of direct contact hours. These assignments may include lesson plans, readings, papers, projects, presentations or other work relating the course content to classroom application. Most final course projects will be due two weeks after the final class meeting. An official grade report will be provided automatically 10 to 15 business days after projects are submitted.
6 6 of 6 9/13/ :02 AM Courses for credit qualify for PA Act 48 standards; non-credit coursework does not qualify. A three credit class will be posted as Act hour equivalency. Students must supply their unique PA Act 48 Professional Personal ID number and complete the request form, distributed in class, to have their credit course posted. Act 48 posting to the PA Department of Education occurs at the end of each month, after final grading for coursework is complete. The University of the Arts reserves the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment, reschedule any course or to change the instructor. If a cancellation should occur, students will be notified prior to the start of classes and will have the option of taking another course or receiving a full refund. The University is not responsible for supplies that may be purchased in advance.
