1 ARTS 2316 Painting I Syllabus Addendum Summer 2018/8 Week Course The Studio Structure: What is Participation, preparedness, responsible studio etiquette? Participation: Your final grade for the semester will reflect your effective use of class time. It is very important for your growth and successful completion of the assignments to approach this studio experience fully: ï arrive promptly ï work consistently ï take only occasional breaks ï stay to the end of class ï clean up properly (align easels & stack stools on tables at the end of class) ï participate fully in the class critiques Preparedness: ï Keep and organize copies of all materials, including the syllabus, articles, links and online resources ï Arrive promptly with all required supplies: your supplies will replace a text for this class. I have made a detailed list of required supplies. It is essential that you make the commitment to purchase these and have them by class 2 ï Complete homework assignments: these are extremely time sensitive because they are the resource material for in-class work Responsible Studio Etiquette: ï Respect other class members and their working space and supplies ï Demonstrate responsibility with safe use of materials ï Clean up thoroughly after each work session ï Keep sink clear of wet and dry paint Required Assignments/Problems: Additional Homework assignments will be assigned to support each Painting I. Four (4) Still-Life Paintings Exploring: ï ï ï ï Reductive & Additive Applications of Paint Implied & Actual Texture Underpainting & Glazing Concepts of Color schemes/harmonies Painting Size: 15 x 15 / Support: Watercolor Paper or Canvas Painting 1) Monochromatic Painting employing reductive painting technique Painting 2) Monochromatic Painting employing additive painting technique on Burnt Sienna Underpainting Painting 3) Cool Analogous Painting on warm-grey ground Painting 4) Warm Analogous on cool-grey ground (Panel Support optional) Subject: The subject matter will be still-life set-ups rendered from direct observation in the studio. Some paintings will be fast, loose and gestural while some will be more refined. Additional Considerations: ï Whether colors recede or advance will depend not only on their temperature, but also on others factors that include: texture (impasto vs. washes), brushwork and other types of paint application will help influence their place in the picture plane. ï The literal form, character of a shape and its compositional placement will also determine the emphasis placed on that object inside the picture plane. Rhythm, repetition and variety will also influence the composition s success. Artist Examples: Ellen Phelan, Mark Tansey, Jennifer Bartlett, Georges Braque, Hans Hoffman, David Hockney, Paul Cezanne, Corot, William Beckman, Zubaran, Henri Matisse
