2 Preparation Prepare a 9 x 12 Masonite panel with DecoArt Acrylic Raw Sienna. Using the roller brush to achieve an eggshell finish. Or prepare a stained background with Mona Lisa Paint Thinner and Raw Sienna Genesis Oil or Traditional Oil Paint. Dry or allow to dry. Seal with Final Coat Varnish after the stain has dried. Transfer Information Trace the line drawing in pencil. Transfer using white graphite. 3 Painting: Stage One Violin Wooden Section Mix the following values (see page # for the swatch match). Watch the video for proper blending techniques. M Medium: RS + R + BU + TW Light: Medium Mix + TW + RS High Light: Light + TW + Y Dark: Medium + BU + R Low Dark: Dark + BU + Blk Sheet Music and Book Pages Medium: TW + RS + a small amount of Black Light: Med Mix + RS + TW High Light: Light + TW Dark: Medium + RS + BU Low Dark: Dark + BU + Blk Tailpiece and Pegs Base with Black and highlight with Light Gray or Warm White. Bridge Medium: Light: Dark: TW + Black Medium Mix + TW Medium + Black Bow Base the dark side in with Warm Black (Black + BU). Add the light section with Light Gray or Warm White by Kingslan & Gibilisco Decorative Arts Page 3

4 Background Book Medium: TW + Blk + Y + RS Light: Medium + TW + Y High Light: Light + TW Dark: Medium Mix + Blk Low Dark: Dark + Blk Stage Two (Detail Work) Add lines on the violin using thinned Black + BU. Using the same mix, add music to sheet music and decoration to the front book cover. Add four strings to the violin using Warm White. Stage Three (Shines and Shadows) If necessary, add a glaze of Warm Black in the original dark areas of the objects especially the extreme right side of each object. Reinforce with Black that has not been thinned. On the violin, glaze Medium and Dark areas with R. Glaze Light sections with Orange (Y + R). Into wet glaze, add shines using Warm White (TW + Y) Shadows Shadows occur only if these three things are present: light, an interruption of the light and a receiver of the shadow. If one of these elements is missing, a shadow cannot occur. Foreground Book/Folder Medium: TW + Blk + Y + RS Light: Medium + TW + Y High Light: Light + TW Dark: Medium Mix + Blk Low Dark: Dark + Blk Shadows have the following characteristics: The are transparent. They fall opposite of the light source. The shadow is the shape of the object causing the shadow. They follow the form of the object receiving the shadow Shadows are cooler than the receiver. Some shadows can cast colour (as in translucent glass or liquid). Use the above guidelines for the shadows on the table that occur from the book and the violin. First place UB + BU (this makes a transparent black) where indicated in the diagram. Then come in with opaque black (the black straight out of the jar) and strengthen next to and under the objects. Keep subtle. Varnish Varnish the dried piece with Final Coat brand varnish. This varnish can be applied with either a brush or a stain applicator pad. The first coat may separate or bead up.
