1 1 of 6 1/18/ :31 AM Continuing Education CE*2708C*01 Hinda Schuman, hschuman@uarts.edu Course Description This course is an exploration of the fundamental principles, techniques and application of digital camera-based image making, and is intended for students with no experience with digital photography. In addition to student critiques, topics include the basics of camera function, image storage and various means of output for the final print. Receive advice on purchasing equipment as well as the variety of digital services available today. A digital SLR camera and portable storage device are required. Print output is the student's responsibility. Note: This course is offered during the fall + spring semesters only. Course Objective Students will be able to use their cameras on manual mode, as well as the various auto modes. They will be able to photograph under various lighting conditions including natural light and flash. Students will have an understanding of color theory, design and composition. Students will have an overview of the history of photography as well as be able to begin to look at photographs with an experience eye and make a judgment for themselves as to what makes a good and /or interesting photograph. They will produce a body of work that that is a group of photographs on one theme. Course Assessment Students are expected to participate in all classroom activities including class shoots, critiques, and homework assignments (shooting and reading). Students will be evaluated on project completion, class participation and overall growth during the term.. Students are to arrive on time to class and arrive prepared for the class activities. Students are reminded to always have a camera, and strobe, with them in class as well as a flash drive, eternal HD or DVD to bring/take home images. Also to be sure to always have the instruction booklet that came with their cameras to each class (or access to them online) The final project will account for approximately 30% of the final grade. Weekly assignments will account for approximately 50% of the final grade. 20% of the final grade will be based upon in class photography & participation, The final project will be printed and matted for final presentation and will include 8-12 prints. 2 2 of 6 1/18/ :31 AM Session 1 Date: INTRODUCTION: SESSION #1 Part 1: What is a photograph? What is a snapshot? What is the history of digital photography? What is the digital revolution? How did we in the 21st century get to this point photographically? What is happening now that will become history? Photographs, holograms, video satellite and the democratization of photography. Issues of art, design, documentary, and how digital blurs the previously stated divides. Part 2: So what camera do you need and what is the importance of your personal vision? This class is ultimately about increasing your abilities and awareness of how to make a good photograph. There are lots of bells and whistles in the digital world. But we would like to say this class is really about making good photographs. First discussion of CAMERA RAW format. Overview of what we will cover in the next 9 weeks. Rules of the road. Intro to FSTOP and shutter speeds, using the camera on manual. Be sure that each week you bring your camera, booklet, cards card readers, cords, flash drives, etc. Shooting assignment due FEBRUARY 2ND: black and white in color. Rough and smooth. Bring in three edited images on a flash drive/or other device. Have the entire shoot/take available on the flash drive along with the edit. Reading assignment due FEBRUARY 2ND: text: Chapt. 1 p2-9 and chapt 3. p Additional assignment: due FEBRUARY 2ND Please bring in one photograph that means a lot to you. It can be a personal photo, and professional photo you found, or anything. Just be able to talk a bit about why that photograph motivates you to want to take more photographs. Session 2 Date: The camera, the computer: We will explore matters of light and depth of field. Emphasis will be on learning to photograph in manual mode so that you may learn to have complete control of the camera. This includes explanations and demonstrations about F-stops and shutter speeds and what each does to help you create the image you want. We will re-visit this topic several times. We will also look at the built in light meter and white balance. Second discussion of camera raw format. Shooting assignment: For February 9th. Worm s eye, bird s eye and 10 step. Birds eye to be shot with shallow depth of field, Worm s eye to be shot with great depth of field and 10 step to be shot with slow and fast shutter speeds. READING assignment due FEBRUARY 9th. Chapt 6 p Chapt 8 p Session 3 Date:

3 3 of 6 1/18/ :31 AM Lights, camera, color! We will look at color theory and why it is important to photographers. We will explore RGB & CMYK and talk about color output and how color influences our perceptions. We will discuss monochromes, and RGB and PIXELS and bit depth. We will look at the in camera histogram in RGB- where available and the luminance histogram. We will look at the work of some photographers who use color as their subject. We will also look at photographers who work in black and white and talk about the similarities and differences. Shooting assignment for FEBRUARY 16th. RGB. You are to concentrate on making images that have either R, G, B as the dominant color in each image. You are to find these colors in the world. ( not just put a green pepper on a green piece of paper ). You will need to have 3 well-composed images one red, one blue and one green. ( not 4 or 5) READING assignment due FEBRUARY 16th. Chapt 11 p Chapt. 12 p Session 4 Date: Session #4 : FEBRUARY 16th Photoshop and bridge and Complimentary Colors. Introduction to file management with adobe bridge (CS5) and the tool palette in Photoshop. We will play around the basics. We will look at complimentary colors and the cmyk palette as well as RGB and how they interact. We will look again at the color wheel and how color determines mood and design. We will see how color is used in the real world and we will learn sizing of images and converting to JPG,, TIFF and PSD from camera RAW. Shooting assignment due: February 23rd. Complimentary colors. Red-cyan; green- magenta; blue-yellow- you will find these complimentary colors in the real world and make images that are exclusively made of these three complimentary colors. One pair in each photograph. Bring in 3 images. (one of each complimentary pair). NO OTHER COLORS allowed in the frame. Reading assignment due: FEBRUARY 23rd Chapt 9 p Session 5 Date: Session #5 February 23rd. Basics of composition. Or did you mean to lop off the head of grandma? We will look at the work of photographers for whom composition is the guiding light. (!) Irving Penn, Ray Metzger, John Pfahl. We will discuss the rule of thirds. Centering the subject, leading lines, and look at square, horizontal and vertical formats. We will learn the rules and then learn how and when to break them. Assignment #1 due March 2nd. Bring in one example of a well-composed image. Be able to state why you feel it is well composed.

You should have one edited image for each topic, and please bring your entire take on a flash drive. Reading Assignment for March 2nd. Chapt. 13 p read it, don t belabor it. There is a lot of information here. Session 6 Date: Bridge and Photoshop. Metadata explained. Key words explained. Folders and subfolders explained. In Photoshop we will size images, and look at basic corrections. We will go over selection tools. Reading assignment for March 16th. Chapt Chapt Shooting Assignment for March 16th: Foreground and background. Please bring in 3 images that illustrate this concept. ( not 2 images and not 4 images) Session 7 Date: Light. What is the single most important element of a photograph? Is it light? Or is it time? Either way we will explore light. Using your flash off and on camera, outdoor light, open shade, light to create a mood, unique lighting modes. Assignment #1 due march 23rd (spring break) Bring to class two examples of photographs/photographers whose lighting intrigues you, or where the light is compelling to you. Shooting Assignment due March 23rd. 1)photograph using only window light: do a portrait and a still life. 2) Photograph using the flash as a primary light source, this should be done in a reasonably dark room, or evening/night light outside. 3) photograph using a long exposure ( 1 second or longer). You may choose to do 2 of the three assignments for a total of 3 images due.. ( portrait, still life, and either long exposure or flash)- any topic. Reading assignment due March 23rd. chapt 10 p Session 8 Date: Bring to class your ideas for your final project. In words and pictures be able to present an outline. We will offer feedback on your ideas. ( bring in at least two photos ( on a stick is fine) to show us. In class discussion of what a body of work is what it means, and how others accomplish that. Assignment: shoot for final project. Session 9 Date: Individual meetings to go over final project. We will divide up into groups of 3 or 4 and each group will go over each other s work while I work individually. Review printing from Photoshop

5 5 of 6 1/18/ :31 AM Session 10 Date: Final critique. Where do you go from here? Your project, which you have been working on for several weeks, will consist of 8-12 images on one theme. No more and no less. They will be printed, matted, and ready for viewer comment. You will be 7:00PM. You will not be matting in the final class. Your prints are to over matted using white off white or bright white matt board. Session 11 Date: March 30thth- individual meetings to go over final project. Review printing from photoshop. Assignment #10. Final project due April 6th. Printed, matted, and in the order that makes most sense to you. Session 12 Date: Final class/ critique/exhibit in class. Individual instructors will decide the optimum time for taking attendance and may penalize for habitual lateness of absence. Repeated absences may result in a grade of "F" for the course. Students who withdraw from a course must do so in writing. Nonattendance does not constitute an official withdrawal. To have ACT 48 Activity Hours for this course reported to the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) you must complete and return the CE Request for Activity Hours Submission Form to the UArts Continuing Studies Office and meet all requirements outlined by the PDE. The University of the Arts reserves the right to cancel classes due to low enrollment, reschedule any course or to change the instructor. If a cancellation should occur, students will be notified prior to the start of classes and will have the option of taking another course or receiving a full refund.
