Chapter 6-Existing Light Photography
All of these images were taken with available light.

Painting with light-using available light
Photography that includes artificial light which naturally exists in the scene. Can be daylight indoors, and twilight outdoors. It is simply the light that happens to be on the scene of whatever subject you are taking a picture of. This type of photography is generally used to describe low lighting conditions.
Why digital is so great for all kinds of lighting. Color film had to be corrected for the type of lighting. With digital you can set the camera for the type of lighting. With digital you can correct for the type of lighting after the image is taken using photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop. With digital you can adjust the ISO to be different from image to image. With digital you can also adjust the White Balance to match the type of lighting.
Existing Light What it is: Existing light is the light that exists naturally when you take your photo; it is also called ambient light, available, or natural light. It is usually considered to be during the day inside or outside from dusk to dawn, or night photography. What it does: Existing light provides very real lighting conditions for subjects and their environments. Where it is found: Existing light comes from any light source that can brighten a scene, from a light bulb to a candle. What types are there: Existing light comes in nearly infinite variations; the most common include incandescent lights, fluorescents, mercury vapor, candles, flash lights, and so on.
Existing-light pictures have a natural appearance because they are made by the natural lighting on the subject. Also called available light photography. Palace Theater Downtown Columbus at night.
Digital changes existing light photography! White Balance-You have new settings for the type of light you are shooting in. ISO-With digital photography you can change the ISO settings with every shot and this includes a wide variety of ISO settings from very slow 100 to over on some cameras. LCD review-you can see right away what your image looks like to that you can adjust the exposure, White Balance, etc.
Digital camera settings that affect existing light photography Incandescent lighting (light bulbs) Fluorescent lighting You can also shoot with Auto White Balance and then fix the lighting for the image with Adobe Photoshop later.
The challenge of low light Sharpness: This is a very big problem. Because of the low light you will usually use large open apertures and slower shutter speeds. Try to use a tripod with existing light photography. Noise: You will tend to use higher ISO settings with existing light images which will tend to produce more noise in the images. Contrast: Low light is often very contrasty light. Areas with light tend to be bright but others areas of the image are very dark. Light quality: Low light levels give a very different look to the light and a scene than bright lights do. Light color: Low light often means that the light on the scene has varied colors. Multiple light sources can also tend to give the color a tint.
ISO settings You can use any ISO for any light: The ISO setting does not have to always be a very high ISO number for existing light images if you use a larger aperture and a tripod. Use low ISO settings for highest quality: Use the lowest ISO setting you can for any given lighting condition. Choose high ISO settings for speed: If you need to shoot sports images and you cannot use a flash then select the highest ISO setting your camera has.
ISO settings Select high ISO settings for handholding in low light: This will keep your existing light images sharper. Noise and a sharp image are more important than soft, blurry images. Use high ISO settings for moderate and low light street photography: Any type of night photography will require high ISO settings even if you are using a tripod.
Use a tripod to support your camera. Advantages of using a good tripod: 1. Can shoot at lower ISO settings and shutter speeds and not have camera shake 2. Can have your hands free to arrange the subjects or paint with light 3. Keeps your camera in a safe place in low light settings 4. Can use to compose the shot and then take the image with a timer or remote 5. Camera will always be in the same place from shot to shot
Lens speed Lens speed refers to the maximum aperture diameter, or minimum f-number, of a photographic lens. A lens with a larger maximum aperture (that is, a smaller minimum f-number) is a fast lens because it delivers more light intensity (luminance) to the focal plane, allowing a faster shutter speed Example of fast lens apertures: f1.4, f1.8, f2.0
You want to have a fast lens like 1.8 or 1.4. Remember the smaller the number the faster the lens because it is really a fraction.
Lens speed A very fast lens, the maximum aperture is 1.8 A very slow lens, the maximum aperture is 3.5
Lens speed Today camera lens manufactures have gone to more zoom power with slower lens speed. Most point-and-shoot cameras have very slow lens with maximum apertures around 3.0 or 3.5 This means for existing light images you must use higher ISO settings and slower shutter speeds which can produce more noise and blur in existing light images. Take existing light images in the aperture priority mode and let the camera set the correct shutter speed. BUT BE SURE TO USE A TRIPOD.
What happens to depth-of-field with large lens openings? Depth-of-field decreases as the lens opening gets larger. So you will have very shallow depth-of-field with many of your available light pictures.
Handholding techniques Remember that telephoto lenses (and zooms) will magnify the subject but they will also magnify camera movement. Telephoto lenses (and zooms) need faster shutter speeds than wide-angle lenses to gain equal sharpness of a scene. Smaller digital sensors may also require faster shutter speeds to give sharp images. So if you have to take a low light image without a tripod, use a wide-angle setting to get sharper images.
White Balance Existing Light Settings Typical White Balance settings on most digital cameras today.
White Balance The color of light changes dramatically with different light sources, so White Balance settings are very important with existing light images. Try these techniques for using your white balance: White balance to the main light source Try auto white balance Use custom white balance Try an unmatched preprogrammed setting Bracket your white balance settings.
The type of lighting will affect the color of the resulting image. Here the White Balance was set for incandescent lighting. Setting the White Balance can help you with existing light images. Here the White Balance was set for Auto White Balance.
Same shot different lighting settings for the White Balance on the camera. Auto White Balance Cloudy CORRECT FLUORESCENT SETTING Day Light Tungsten
Outdoors at night Night cityscapes Night moonscapes
Fireworks Use a tripod-long exposure to get multiple bursts, like 20 seconds at f11 with an ISO of 200.
Time Exposure used to capture fireworks. Use a tripod to support your camera to prevent camera shake. F 5.6, 8 seconds
Images from the 4 th of July in West Jefferson, Ohio. All taken with a long exposure of f16 at 4 seconds with the ISO set at 200. Images were combined in Adobe Photoshop CC.
Lightning From the Internet
Lightning Lightning is very challenging to capture. Be sure you are in a safe place and not a target for the subject. Start with a setting of f5.6 and ISO 100. Let the camera then set the shutter speed. If you have a B (Bulb) setting on your camera you can use a small aperture like f11 or f16 and keep the shutter open for about 30 seconds to a minute. You will have to do a great deal of experimenting to get the shot you want. Be sure to check all your images in the LCD and then make adjusts for the next shot.
Some existing light images Chapel handheld image Self portrait with time exposure and flash TIME EXPOSURE-30 SECONDS
The only lights on this picture taken at the Shriner Circus were a 200 watt bulb at the top left and a 75 watt bulb at the bottom right.
Notice that the sky gets very bright the longer the time exposure. This was for about 40 seconds at 5.6 ISO 100.
Time exposure taken at dusk so that there is still some light in the sky. Used a telephoto lens, 135mm. Be sure to use a tripod when taking time exposures.
Below, the same picture but this time I used the zoom lens, used a slower shutter speed and zoomed as the shot was taken. Time exposure of the Broad Street Bridge with buildings in the background.
Time exposure of a lighted, moving subject can give you some neat affects.
The photographer was able to get in the picture in this long time exposure. (40 seconds at f 8.) Can you find his image?
The moving cars taillights provide a neat affect when taking a night time exposure of the Columbus Police Headquarters.

FLOWER TAKEN IN AVAILABLE LIGHT AT FRANKLIN PARK CONSERVATORY.
When taking sunrise or sunset pictures be sure to take the meter reading to the side of the sun so that the lens does not shut down and not show much of the foreground.
FUN WITH TIME EXPOSURES. You can get in your own picture many times ISO 800, f8, 45 seconds, camera on a tripod.
Setup a time exposure then use your flash to put light on the subject.
More fun with time exposures. Leave the lens open for about 50 seconds, f8, then flash on the face as you walk across, same person in every flash shot.
Available light photographs can be used in any type of setting. They make great wedding portraits.
This type of a photograph would be impossible to do without using the available light techniques. You could not get this shot with a flash. From Kodak Book
