To develop an appreciation and knowledge of scenic artistry; To develop advanced skills in the various materials, tools and processes used in scenic painting; To develop and nurture artistic skills in the transfer, layout and execution of the designer's rendering elevations into realized projects; and To develop an advanced terminology associated with scene painting. IV. Student Learning Outcomes: 1) Students will identify and describe the duties of a professional scenic artist and the tools they use. 2) Students will demonstrate a mastery of color theories and how they are perceived optically. 3) Students will demonstrate advanced techniques used in the creation of scenic art. 4) Students will critique, evaluate, and defend their artistic choices as they pertain to established painting techniques. 5 8. Required Materials 1/8", 1/4", 1/2", 1", 1/1/2" Scene Painting Fitches 9. Project Description Project 1 Metal Reflection: Student will select and recreate a metal reflection project on an 4' x 8' panel. Project 2 Wall Paper: Student will select and recreate a multi layered damask wall paper pattern on a 4' x 8' panel. Project 3 Portraits: Student will select and recreate a classically painted portrait on a 4' x 8' panel. Project 4: Translucency/Stained Glass: Student will select and recreate a stained glass image on an 4' x 8' muslin panel. Project 5 Faux Painting The student will paint 8-2' x 2' panels of various faux painting projects including, glazing, stucco, staining, stamping, color washing, gold leafing, etc. Mock Union Exam: The student will be given a project that they must recreate within an 8- hour period during final exam week. 10. Final Grades. A= Excellent work with strong skills in the interpretation, process, and painting technique. Superlative effort and creativity B = Good work with a solid grasp of interpretation, process, and technique. No technical problems and good effort. C = Competent work with basic understanding of scene painting but problems that can be addressed. Adequate effort. D = Poor work with a failure to master basic painting techniques. Poor effort in completing projects. F = Lacking understanding and practice of basic painting techniques. Failure to do work. Poor attitude. Inadequate preparation. Assessment disclaimer. The above evaluations are based on professionalism, participation, promptness, thoroughness, technical/mechanical skills, attitude, and quality. Adjudicating art is difficult to say the least; nevertheless, subjective assessment is one of the primary means by which to evaluate your grades. Therefore, as a student in any course in Theatre & Dance, you must be willing to accept the subjective portion of your verbal and written assessment from your professional faculty.

6 11. Miscellaneous. Subject Advisory. This class may explore exercises, scenes, plays, films, and visual art that could hurt some people sensibility on account to adult language, mature subjects, sexuality and nudity. Artistic subject matter will not be censored, however, you are not required to participate in or watch anything you may find offensive. Please feel free to voice your concerns. Civility and Harassment. Participants must feel free to express their ideas and thoughts without any fear of retribution or ridicule. No matter the expressed idea, there will be zero tolerance for personal behavior that is inappropriate toward another person or idea. Texting, talking on the phone, leisure browsing, eating in the classroom, or working on unrelated material without the express consent of the Professor will not be tolerated. Open Door Policy.
