1 SUFFOLK COMMUNITY COLLEGE Eastern Campus Riverhead, New York Spring 2008 Course Outline Catalog Number: VA 91 Instructor: John Stefanik, Adjunct Prof. Course Title: Introduction to Photography Semester: Spring 2008 Section Number: 7008 Time: Tuesday 6:00 9:50 (15 meetings) 2/5/08 5/21/08 1. Instructional Procedures: A. Lectures, demonstrations, and darkroom work B. Discussion and critique of student work which will include black and white photographs to be taken out of doors for weekly assignments. C. A textbook will be used to supplement lectures, demonstrations, and darkroom work. D. Much of class time will be spent on the camera and darkroom procedures. 2. Student Requirements: (Please note letter F below.) A. Students must attend all classes and participate in class discussions and Activities. During the course of the semester, one absence will be permitted, after which further absences will be considered cause for withdrawing a student from the course. Lateness to class of more than five minutes will be counted as half an absence. B. Students must complete all assigned projects. C. Students will retain all work in a portfolio to be evaluated at the end of the term. D. Students will be responsible for Field Logs for each assignment done. E. There will be a final exam covering most notes written on blackboard and textbook material. *F. There will be a photography gallery visit to New York City on 2/9/08 and 2/16/08 accompanied by an observational paper and notes from the show. Details of the show will be gone over in class. 3. Grading Criteria: A. Each student s art work will be measured by its relation to the following: 1. The Instructor s standard of artistic excellence. 2. The artistic productions of his or her classmates. 3. His or her artistic potential. 4. Willingness to work hard and engage in classroom activities! B. Participation, attitude, punctuality, attendance, and the timely completion Of assigned work will all affect a student s final grade. The Instructor may add or subtract points from a student s grade average after assessing his or her performance within these criteria.

A student s final grade will be determined as follows: 1. 65% - Final Portfolios 2. 10% - ID 12 slides *3. 20% - Galley Visit and Observational paper. 4. 5% - Field Logs/Data Sheets 4. Course Objectives: Maturational Objectives; by the completion of the course the instructor hopes that students will have: A. Developed a keen awareness of their world and the Abundance of creative possibilities. B. Established themselves as active participators in the gathering of photographic possibilities. C. Employ the camera as an artistic and spiritual extension of themselves. D. Establish that photography is a strong emotional and visual language. E. Identify darkroom chemistry, its use, along with the proper disposal, and recycling of it. F. Accurately identify and implement camera controls along with darkroom technical procedures. G. Use many of the creative facets of composition to achieve optimum photographic harmony. H. Evaluate proper negative exposure for the best overall black and white printing results. 5. Materials Needed for Class: *A. Camera 35mm Single Lens Reflex (SLR) Sorry, point and shoot cameras are not acceptable. B & W film Tri- X pan 135 film. Iso exposures B. 2 packages developing paper 25 sheets, 8 x 10 size, Kodak Polycontrast III RC or Illford Multigrade III RC. C. 1-35mm Metal Rapid Load reel. D. 1-35mm Metal developing tank. *OR* E. 1-35mm Plastic developing tank. F. 1-35mm Negative Plastic Storage Sleeves; sheets.

Textbook: A short course in Black & White Photography by Barbara London ed.no Field Log Data Sheets: You will be responsible for handing in field log data sheets every time you expose a roll of film. (This is a must!). 5% of your grade! LIST OF ASSIGNMENTS IN ORDER, BY FILM ROLL NUMBERS Roll #1 Subject matter of your own choosing; incorporating shallow and great depth of field. (F-stops, Aperture Priority) Roll #2 Visual Textures; striking subjects that make a strong Photographic statement. Roll #3 Object close, same object far away, incorporating all of that object. Roll #4 Four different sides or perspectives of same subject. Roll #5 - PhotogramsD objects (non film) Roll #6 Architecture; and/or structures of exterior and interior details. Roll #7 Landscapes; location open, water, fields, bays, back yards, Farms, neighborhoods. Roll #8 Portraits of people outdoors using available light; indoors Using studio or home lighting. Roll #9 - Action/Movement; freezing, panning, using various S shutter Speeds (Shutter Priority) Roll #10 Narrative; telling a story in a sequence of events. Roll #11 Portraits of Hands; relaxed, tensed, working, holding, and passion. Roll #12 The Pin Hole Camera working with paper negative and Positive (Calotype). CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOGRAPHY VA91 Introduction to art and techniques of the camera and darkroom. Students learn basic black and white available light photography, including film exposure and development, variable contrast printing, enlarging and dry mounting. Students must provide their own fully adjustable 35mm camera (with manual f-stops and shutter speeds), film, paper and some other supplies. (2 hrs. lecture, 2 hrs. studio per week.) E-W/ 3 cr.hrs.
