Welcome to the Fine Arts Painting Club Welcome to all our new members. You have joined a club which will be a growing, exciting place to be. The Planning Committee has been hard at work since August to get this club up and running. The new Arts and Technology Center will be open beginning in January and will have a beautiful bright room for us to work in. (We will be sharing the room with the Gourding Club and the Scrappers and Stampers and we have worked out a schedule so we can all have use of the room). We will have all kinds of exciting art related activities for beginners to advanced artists to be a part of. We hope it will be a way to get to know other artists, learn, share, grow, and just enjoy making beautiful works of art. IF you have any questions please Debbie at QCFAPCpresident@gmail.com. Membership applications are available in the clubhouse! There is SO MUCH information to give to you..i hope you will take the time to really read through this newsletter.
The Creative Arts and Technlogy Center The new Creative Arts and Technology Center has just been built next to the Madera Clubhouse. It will be opening at the beginning of January and includes all kinds of rooms for exciting arts and crafts work. The Fine Arts Studio is the room we will meet in. It is 1600 Square feet and will have tables, a limited number of easels, bright light and will be a great place to meet with other art people. We will share the room with the Gourding Club and the Scrappers and Stampers. The Room is administered solely through the clubs. That means that the doors are locked and unlocked by club members and are monitored by club members. No one may be in the room without a monitor present. In addition there are requirements for using the room and maintaining the cleanliness and configuration of the room. Each club has been asked to determine the policies and procedures for how the room gets used during their scheduled usage times. The clubs even maintain the first aid kits. Therefore, although a Quail Creek resident can use the room without being a member of a club, after one or two uses, the resident will be asked to join the appropriate club. In order to be certified to use the room and get your membership card, you will be asked to attend a short training session. We will do the first of these sessions during the monthly membership meeting on January 7 (see below). So plan to attend! In addition, each club will have a hallway glass display window. We will be able to display our paintings and also sell them from these windows. We will let you know what type of work we are looking for each month for the windows. See below for our February display call for entries.
QCFAPC WEBSITE Did you know we have a website? You can check on the website for up to date information on all the events that are happening and scheduled classes, etc. If you forget the website address it can be accessed through the Quail Creek website. While we will try to inform you of happenings through the What s Happening, or through s, your best bet is always to just check the website! Add it to your bookmarks so you don t forget: QCFAPC.wordpress.com Please sign up for automatic updates from the club website. Go to QCFAPC.wordpress.com section titled "news." This is the club blog. Look for the spot that says "follow blog via " and type in your address. You will receive an from the site asking you to confirm the subscription. You must reply or your subscription will not activate. After that, each time anything is posted to the blog, you will get an automatic update via . Monthly Meeting January 7 6:30pm: Important: We will be doing the certification training for new members so you can use the new art room. After training you will receive a membership card which will allow access. Following the meeting we will have a talk by visiting Australian Artist Amanda Harris on Mixed Media Collage. (next meeting will be on Wed. Feb 11. ) Drop Cloths etc: More on this topic at our certification meeting, but just so you can be prepared: Please bring drop cloths to use under your workspace or under your easels to keep your work area clean. Approved substances for use in the Fine Arts Studio will be water, alcohol, masking fluids, turpenoid, gamsol, household glues, painting oils and facilitators. Members are responsible to bring their own supplies and take them home.
Open Studio Wednesday and Friday 9 am to noon Beginning January 7, Open Studio Time is free time in the Art Studio scheduled for Art Club Members to come and work on their own projects in the studio, in the company of other Art Club members. Work in any medium. Initially you will work from your own photos, etc, but later on we may set up a still life. Initially, you should bring your own easel if you need one, but later on there will be a small number of easels available to members on a first-come, first-served basis. Even if you have a studio at home, come and try out the ambiance of painting with a group of soon-to-be-friends! En Plein Air Though painting outdoors is considered common nowadays it was seen as revolutionary when it originated in the early 19 th century Europe. En Plein Air is a French term translating into In the Open Air or simply in the outdoors. This painting is based on direct observation of the senses, capturing natural light as we process fleeting moments in the landscape. Welcome to FAPC Plein Air Group, it s always a great time of year to be outside painting in Arizona. We are forming a friendly and dedicated group to have fun and enjoy the outdoors as we get a different perspective of being original and free with our artwork. Beginners are welcome and encouraged to find a mentor or be a spectator. Departure times from the West side of the Madera parking lot are firm. Generally following our painting time, we will meet for a presentation and discussion. This will not be a Critique as such but after each paint out the artists can show their work and explain what they were focused on that day and how it went for them. For those interested we will break for lunch or coffee while others may choose to continue working on location. Plein Air Schedule for 2015 January 13 th, February 10 th, March 10. Locations to be announced.
Art to Heart The QCFAPC is having the 1 st Annual miniature paint celebration. The painting must have a heart the energy center that renews & sustains the rhythm of life. Art fulfills Life Paint any medium 6 X 6 or any size smaller & have some fun. Paintings will be displayed in our Hub window during February for St. Valentines Day. Each will be for sale. One will be randomly drawn for a prize. Bring entries last week of January and first week of February during open studio times, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Help Needed In order to be an active club we need help on our committees. Many hands make light work. The following committees can use some help: Special Events (Hub Open house Feb 27 and Discover Quail Creek mar 3), Education, Plein Air, Scheduling, Monitors, Publicity. Please contact QCFAPCpresident@gmail if you can help out. We really need you.

Partial attendance can be prorated according to your travel plans with drawing exercise assignments provided for your individual needs. Class description: A course in enhancing creativity and artistic confidence. I believe that an ability to draw is the foundation to many other pursuits in the fine arts in any medium. This approach to drawing was developed by Betty Edwards who wrote in the preface to her book this is not only about learning to draw. The true subject is perception. the larger underlying purpose was always to bring right hemisphere functions into focus and teach how to see in new ways. Supplies: A #2 yellow writing pencil with an eraser top, #4B drawing pencil, a good eraser, drawing tablet at least 12 x 16 or larger/12 sheets or more, a drawing board or cardboard so that you can sit with the paper or tablet in your lap. Other items can be collected later as you desire. Contact: Pat Thoresen, instructor at-cell: plthoresen@gmail.com
Class: Oil Painting for the Absolute Beginner Price: Free for members $60 non-members February 12 Mar 26 Thursday afternoon 1:00 4:00 Fine Arts Room Maximum number of students is 12 Registration opens January 17 th 2014 for members, Jan 20 for non-members. Sign up by at Class description: We will explore the basics of working with paint. Students will learn color mixing, value scales, and different techniques for applying paint. Learning to see, working from observation and discovering composition, proportion and space are practiced. Beginning level Supplies: I recommend ordering supplies online. Dickblick.com is one of my favorites. A plastic sheet to cover table or floor. We will probably work small on the art club s table easels but you may want to bring a portable standing easel if you have one. Brushes: Bristle brushes:#4, 6, 10, softer brushes, ¼ inch flat, round, small outlining brush. you will add to brushes as you go. I will show some in first class. No need to buy expensive brushes. Arizona Art supplies will give you a 20% discount if you show your membership card. Paints: I do not recommend student grade paints! Get Titanium white, Cadmium yellow medium, Cadmium red light, Alizarin crimson, Yellow Ocher, Burnt Sienna, Burnt umber, Dioxazine Purple, Sap Green, Ultramarine Blue, Ivory Black again, you will add colors as you go but these will get you started. Also: Turpenoid or gamsol solvent (only these two are allowed in the studio)and a container to safely transport this solvent. Liquin medium, linseed oil (small containers) and a double cup to hold them. Paper towels and a soft rag A color wheel A value scale
Canvas: 8x 10 or 9 x 12 canvas boards or canvas paper pad or canvas with1/2 inch sides. You can start with a pad of canvas paper and we will discuss canvas at first class. Palette: a wooden painting palette is best for mixing. However paints will dry up and be wasted. I recommend but this is totally optional, a masterson sealable palette with corresponding size palette paper (like Tupperware). Keeping your paints in the freezer in this container will keep them workable indefinitely! For more information about the class call or me at: Dorourke12@mac.com Pastel Studio Price: Free for members Begins January 28 Wednesday mornings 9-12 Fine Arts Room Maximum number of participants is 15 Sign up by dorourke12@mac.com This is continuous studio you may join at any time as long as we have not exceeded the number of participants Studio description: This is a chance for pastelists at ALL levels to work together and learn from each other. Debbie O Rourke will be the facilitator but she will also be a participant. There will be a short intro, a time for painting and a group critique at the end. This will be a supportive learning and sharing environment. We will have specific subjects to work on each week and will try new techniques. We will mostly work from photos but will occasionally set up still life or possibly have a model. If we have enough participants we can also see about getting guest teachers to come in. All levels
Pastel ctd. Supplies: Bring whatever supplies you have. I recommend working on larger papers (18x25 type sizes) to be free and experimental. A variety of types of sanded papers and colors of papers. A variety of hard and soft pastels. You will need a drop cloth for under your easel and aluminum foil to line the shelf of the easel. IF you have an easel bring it, as there are a very limited number of easels available in the art studio and you cannot count on having one. For more information about the class call or me at: Debbie O Rourke dorourke12@mac.com Pastel Studio: Schedule for first 6 weeks: Week 1: Any paper. Photo from a vacation trip.
