1 Art 501 Beginning Two Dimensional Design, sec Fall 2008, Sept. 2nd - Dec. 16, Tuesday 5:45-10:00 p.m. Units: 3, Associate Degree Applicable and Transferable U.C., C.S.U. A student absent from classes for emergency reasons must inform the instructor of the reason for the absence. Whenever absence in hours exceed the number of hours the class meets per week, the student may be excluded from the class by the instructor. Students who have registered for a class and who do not attend the first meeting of the class may forfeit their right to a place in the class. It is the student s responsibility to officially drop any class he/ she does not continue to attend. Standards of Student Conduct: Students are expected to maintain a professional level of conduct to facilitate a learning environment. Cheating and Plagiarism: The instructor reserves the right to determine if cheating or plagiarism has occurred; if it does the student will received a F on the assignment or exam, and may receive a F for the course. Children and Animals: Children and Animals are not allowed in the classroom for insurance purposes, other than registered dogs that help people with physical challenges. Cell Phones: Turn them off or set to vibrate, as to not disrupt lectures and learning environment. Do not talk/text on your cell phone during class. Break: Students are encouraged to take a short break during lab time. Final: If you cannot attend the final you must make arrangements with the instructor prior to this date. A student who does not participate in the final or does not turn in the final assignment and does not qualify for an Incomplete will be assigned the grade of F for the final. This grade will be averaged in to determine the course grade.

2 Course Description: An introduction to two dimensional arts through the study of great works of the human imagination; students study and apply historical concepts of design, including the relationship between visual perception and communication, while utilizing the techniques of art media. Course Objectives: 1. Properties of Line. Linear Works by Franz Kline, Richard Diebenkorn, Camille Carot, Georges Rouault, and Kenneth Noland will be presented. Students will analyze works of art which utilize various properties of line, including expressive, descriptive, directional and implied. Students will create a two dimensional design using line. 2. Balance: Symmetrical and Asymmetrical. Works by Frank Lloyd Wright, Michelangelo, Hokusai, Van Gogh, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, and Andre Derain. Students will describe and relate how artists use balance to influence perception and complete an exercise in asymmetrical balance. 3. Shape: Organic and Geometric. Negative and Positive Space. Works by Richard Diebenkorn, Phillip Guston, and M.C. Escher. Students will analyze how artists use shape to create compositional attributes. Students will thumbnail and propose a piece which utilizes both geometric and organic shape within design. 4. Pattern: Ornamental Grammar in Art and Architecture. Translation, Rotation, Inversion, Reflection, Acceleration/Deceleration, Figure/Ground. Works by Max Ernst, Frank Lloyd Wright and Andy Warhol. Students will distinguish between types of pattern and describe how pattern creates visual interest. Students will design and present an original pattern utilizing principles of Ornamental Grammar. 5. Value: Gray Scale and Contrast. Tints, Tones and Shades. Works by Christo and Claude Monet. Students will describe and relate how value is used to create different visual effects. Students will design a work of art which incorporates ten steps of value. 6. Texture: Actual, Simulated, and Invented. Works by Picasso and Jan Van Eyke. Students will examine how artists use texture to create visual interest and create an original design which incorporates use of texture. 7. Color: Characteristics including Hue, Value and Intensity. Harmonies and Optical Illusion. Organization of the Color Wheel. Works by Johannes Itten, Henri Matisee, Ellsworth Kelly and Georges Seurat. Students will compare how artists use color to create visual interest, mood and atmosphere. Students will mix appropriate proportions of paint to match the primary, secondary and tertiary colors of the color wheel. Assemble and present a color wheel. 8. Principles of Design: Harmony, Variety, Balance, Porportion, Dominance, Movement, and Economy. Works by Stuart Davis, Jacob Lawerence, Diego Rivera, Marc Chagall and Rene Magritte. Students examine how artists use the principles of design to create visual interest. Students relate how artists reflect society s values and can influence society; perceptually, politically and spiritually. Students will plan and create original works of art demonstrating the elements and principles of design. 9. Critique: Verbal and Written. Examine and self evaluate work, as well as the works of peers through classroom discussion at the completion of each project. Attend a museum exhibition and assess works by artists within historical context.

3 Learning Outcomes for Art Students earning an Associates Degree in Art will: 1) create works of art and design using problem solving methodologies and intuitive processes. 2) apply the elements and principles of design with competent skill and technique with two and three dimensional media, including technology. 3) use discipline specific terminology in oral and written communication. 4) demonstrate aesthetic responsiveness by taking a position on and communicating the merits of specific works of art and how those works of art reflect human values within historical, cultural, political, and philosophical contexts. Students earning an Associates Degree in Drawing will (one through four above) and: 5) demonstrate proficiency in rendering objects in perspective. 6) show competency drawing the human form. Students earning an Associates Degree in Painting will (one through four above) and: 5) apply color theory in a variety of historical styles. 6) develop a personal dialogue in painting, demonstrated by a cohesive group of five original paintings. Students earning an Associates Degree in Sculpture will (one through four above) and: 5) demonstrate sufficient skill in various traditional and non-traditional sculptural materials. 6) create sculptural works art, which articulate conceptual ability within a contemporary context. Non-art majors taking a course in art will: 1) use discipline specific terminology in oral and written communication. 2) demonstrate aesthetic responsiveness by taking a position on and communicating the merits of specific works of art and how those works of art reflect human values within historical, cultural, political, and philosophical contexts.

4 Time Line (There may be changes as the semester progresses.) Instructor will provide specific assignments weekly. Allow for time both inside and outside of class to successfully complete the assignments. Sept. 2 Sept. 9 Sept. 16 Sept. 23 Sept. 30 Elements and Principles of Design Requirements and Art Materials. First Assignment: Line (expressive) Balance and Space (asymmetrical) All materials needed to complete Line Assignment (mat board, X-acto knife, ruler, line samples, 2H pencil, glue stick). AND materials for Next Assignment: 2 sheets black construction paper, scissors, watercolor paper, tape, black felt-tip pen, extra-fine point (Sharpie). Pattern All black and white materials, tracing paper, may use black felt tip pen (Sharpie). Shape, Letter Forms and Value (negative and positive space) Bring examples of type faces, watercolor paper, pencils, extra-fine felt tip pen (Sharpie), black, white and any color paint (excluding yellow), paint brushes and containers for mixing and water. Color All materials including color wheel and all colors of paint on list. Oct. 7 Oct. 14 Oct. 21 Oct. 28 Texture All materials and textured cloth - like cheese cloth or burlap. Texture continued... 5 Course and Grading Criteria Grading System: Each project will be assigned a grade as according to the criteria set up at the beginning of the assignment; along with a short explanation of how project may be improved. What I look for in a design project: 1. Craftsmanship: time, care, effort spent 2. Is the problem effectively solved within the boundaries of the assignment? Were the directions followed? Use of design principles? 3. Personal approach: insight, creativity, unexpected answer, conceptual ability and research. Critique: At the completion of each assignment, everyone will hang up the projects and for critique. The purpose of this is to 1) see each others projects, 2) learn to discuss design in an objective way using art specific terminology, 3) consider how the projects may be improved. Participation points will be given for 1) bringing your project to critique, 2) bringing yourself to critique, 3) thoughtfully contributing observations to critique. (no finished project, no points) Basis for determining final grade: All projects will be given a grade. Each grade will be averaged at the end of the semester to determine final grade. Projects/Papers 70% Critiques 20% Quizzes 10% Total 100% A = C = A = 100% - 90% A- = C- = B = 89% - 80% B+ = D+ = C = 79% - 70% B = D = D = 69% - 60% B- = D- = F = 59% - 0% C+ = F = Late work: All work is expected to be turned in on time as a matter of professionalism. If you are absent, check in the syllabus and make up work before returning to class, you may the instructor if further clarification is needed. Any late work will be graded in two ways: the initial grade on the project will be lowered one full grade for every class meeting it is late, also your participation grade will be lowered as you can not fully participate in the critique without work to present.
