Department s Mission: Enrich the lives of students by providing opportunities to actively engage in visual art activities using a variety of approaches to develop both creativity and critical thinking skills: integrate their artistic experiences with other academic subjects and different cultures, improve communication and problem solving skills, and learn craftsmanship and teamwork through sustained effort. COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Visual Art program is designed to give students the opportunity to gain confidence in producing art, to reinforce artistic skills and to produce how art can be a great way for selfexpression. In 4th grade the concepts of the art elements and the principles of design are studied 1

2 throughout the year. Students also focus on art history, appreciation, production, and criticism. Subjects of study include color, cultural dimensions and contributions, drawing and painting, 3D crafts, human figure and self-portrait, and perspective. Throughout the year each student obtains knowledge through vocabulary, artists, history, processes, and multiple other methods depending on units. GENERAL COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: To draw a still life To use a sketch as a first step in drawing To learn about organizing the elements in a composition To study a poster closely To draw an adult and a child To understand the concept of proportion and apply it to a drawing To complete a drawing using outline To make new colors by mixing color To compare and explain the different between the effect of different background colors on a drawing To appreciate an abstract work of art To creating an abstract composition using geometric shapes To make decorative designs following a model To complete friezes using grid To make pattern using geometric shapes To learn about mosaic art To make mosaic using collage To observe and distinguish colors found in nature To color a photograph using unrealistic coloring To analyzing Pop Art by examining one of most representative artist; Andy Warhol To create composition using stencil technique I.
