1 AP 2-D Design Portfolio Syllabus 4 [Photography, Digital] MRS. ISAACS This syllabus provides direction for the highly motivated photography student to take the AP Studio Art 2-D Design Exam and earn college credit. The 2-D portfolio contains three sections: Quality, Concentration, and Breadth. In the Quality section, you will submit five examples of your best work. You do not need to show a variety of techniques or approaches, just your best work. SUMMER ASSIGNMENT DUE WEDNESDAY, AUGUST st DAY OF SCHOOL. DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY OR FILM. Compose a total of 200 photographs (see sections below for details) taken with a digital camera. Use the setting on high, not standard, resolution for digital cameras. This creates a larger photographic format for printing purposes. Upload resolution number should not be lower than 180 and 72 is too low. This is found under menu of your camera. All film students must have their film developed and put on a CD at your own expense. ASSIGNMENT two areas..concentration and breadth.. 1. CONCENTRATION of work is a planned investigation of an idea of personal interest to you. Compose 100 digital photos of an in-depth investigation. This will not necessarily be your official concentration. You will only need 12 for the portfolio in this area but you need to make room for any error and of course if you cannot go back to that investigation you have many photos that you can use in case you need them. If you have two ideas photograph both of them. Using a word document answer these below: WHY you chose that idea or subject to investigate? WHERE did you photograph this investigation? HOW did you demonstrate this idea in your photographs? WHICH types of lighting did you include and why was it the best type of lighting for this situation? EXAMPLES OF IDEAS..ARTIST, VACATION, STUDY OF A PERSON S LIFE, PERSONAL EXPERIENCES, FAVORITE PLACES, MUSIC, MOVIES,

2 ENVIRONMENT, COMPARISONS, NATURE, SILOUETTES, PORTRAITS, ETC. A THEME RESEARCH MASTER ARTISTS OR A MASTER PHOTOGRAPHER S WORK WHO INSPIRES YOU AND GOES ALONG WITH YOUR INVESTIGATION 2. BREADTH of work is an experience of a variety of concepts and approaches that demonstrate your abilities and versatility with techniques, problem solving and ideation. Take photographs that you can use with double, triple images, various other techniques, portraiture (formal and informal portraits), macro images, landscapes, architecture and nature. Compose 100 photos of general photography that you could use the above examples. RULES OF EXCELLENT PHOTOGRAPHY RULES OF THIRDS COMPOSITION POINTS OF VIEW MACRO IMAGES COMPOSING ALL PHOTOGRAPHS USING THE ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF ART. SEEING PHOTOGRAPHY AS AN ART FORM. SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENT Take a sketchbook with you every time you shoot. Use the sketchbook as a notebook for storing information that you gather through your research, journaling your thoughts, collecting sample photos, etc. Tape/glue things into it, use it as a diary. After each photo shoot, write a sketchbook entry that addresses the following: -Date of photo shoot

3 -Goal of the photo shoot (ex. working on concentration ideas) -Location -Lighting used -Angles/Perspectives used -Photographic Techniques used (rule of thirds, macro, etc.) -Reflection about how photo shoot went, if it was successful or not. Explain why. 4 PAINTING & DRAWING Create a total of 10 COMPLETE works of Art using the painting and/or drawing medium. These pieces will be added to and considered for the BREADTH section of your final portfolio, so it is CRITICAL that you take each of these pieces seriously during creation. Place an emphasized focus upon the PRINCIPLES of design and composition. Explore a variety of concepts and approaches that demonstrate your abilities and versatility with techniques, problem solving and ideation. Utilize your sketchbook for project planning, sampling, testing various techniques, collecting samples, etc., that will help you develop new ideas. Do not be afraid to try different media, and/or combining multi-media together. 1. CONCENTRATION of work is a planned investigation of an idea of personal interest to you. Conduct an in-depth investigation of a topic/theme/issue/concern or technique(s) that you feel strongly about. You will need to research historic and contemporary artists who have addressed the same topic/theme/issue/concern or technique(s) that you wish to address/use. Gather as much information about these artists as you can regarding their style and subject matter. The concentration section of your portfolio should be inspired by this artist and his/her work/style should be referenced in each piece that you submit. This will not necessarily be your official concentration, but it s getting you started in the right direction. You will only need 12 pieces in the end for the concentration section of your portfolio, but you need to make room for any error and have many pieces from which you can choose later, in case you need them. Create 10 pieces that demonstrate a variety of skills, techniques and compositions. After creating and completing each piece, write a sketchbook entry that addresses the following: -Start date -Hours spent working on it (YES, you should keep a work log) -Date of Completion -Goal of the piece (ex. working on concentration ideas, showing artistic exploration, etc.) -Media -Lighting used -Angles/Perspectives used -Artistic Techniques used (expressive, photorealistic, etc.)

6 -Reflection about how work process went, if it was successful or not. Explain why.
