AP Studio Art Syllabus: Drawing 2-D Design 3-D Design AP Studio Art: Drawing, 2-D, and 3-D Design AP Studio enrollment is typically low in our district. Because of staffing issues and minimum enrollment requirements, we include Drawing, 2-D Design And 3-D Design portfolios in one class period. The following guidelines have helped these classes run smoothly and be an enriching experience for our students: 1. Our curricula are designed so that they are aligned vertically and horizontally. General concepts that are required for the breadth section of each portfolio can be taught at the same time. This can be an enlightening experience for students as they see how visual issues translate from one media or process to another. 2. All 3 portfolios are included in group critiques. Students benefit from seeing and discussing each others work. 3. Time is allotted for individual critiques with teachers. The other students are encouraged to work independently while the teacher is engaged in informal one-on-one critiques. 4. Students are encouraged to be responsible for researching ideas, meeting deadlines and taking care of equipment and supplies.

Course description: All Portfolios All portfolios will allow students the opportunity to investigate and master all aspects of portfolio development: quality, breadth and concentration. The body of work included in the finished portfolio will show evidence of informed and critical decision making that demonstrates growth in content, process and technique. Students will be expected to submit their portfolio to the College Board at the end of the course. Artistic Integrity: Students who use photo references in the production of their art are expected to use photographs they have taken themselves in a way that takes their art beyond duplication. Students will be expected to use artistic integrity throughout the course and adhere to copyright standards, avoiding plagiarism. Drawing Portfolio Students will develop their drawing skills by exploring various processes, techniques, and concepts to create a cohesive body of work. 2-D Design Portfolio Students will develop their 2-dimensional design skills by exploring various processes, techniques and concepts to create a cohesive body of work. 3-D Design Portfolio Students will expand their three-dimensional design skills by exploring various processes, techniques and concepts to create a cohesive body of work.

Expectations All Portfolios Students are expected to commit the time, energy and resources needed in order to produce a portfolio that meets the standards of excellence required in AP Studio Art. A ninety minute class meeting two to three times per week is an inadequate amount of time needed to meet these requirements. Students are strongly encouraged to take an additional art class when their schedule allows. Periodic Saturday sessions will be scheduled throughout the semester as the need arises; students are strongly encouraged to attend these sessions. In addition, students may include work from previous drawing, painting, sculpture and ceramics classes in the breadth section of their portfolio. Homework Students should expect to spend equal amounts of time outside of class as spent in class. Some of this time will be spent working on specific assignments and some of the time generating ideas and doing research. Sketchbook Students will be required to maintain a sketchbook as a tool for generating ideas for assignments and for practicing techniques. Critiques Periodic group critiques will be conducted so that students develop the ability to look at their own work and the work of others objectively. During these sessions they will be expected to use appropriate art vocabulary in a respectful way. Individual critiques will be done on an as needed basis with instructor.

Responsibilities Students-All Portfolios Show a commitment to excellence. Complete summer assignments as required by instructor Attend class regularly. Work with artistic integrity. Organize time and study habits in order to meet deadlines Submit portfolio to the College Board for review. Confer with the instructor and take immediate action if falling behind. Parent Be familiar with the requirements of the AP Studio Art course. Help son/daughter to organize time in support of assignments. Encourage child to communicate with teacher when problems arise. Request an appointment with teacher if as issue remains unresolved. Teacher Teach AP Studio Art at the level and pace in accordance with College Board. Advise student and parent/guardian within the first six weeks if student s work is not adequate. Grading All Portfolios Student grade categories are as follows: Major grades- (60 percent) include class projects, research papers, summer work, slide preparation. Minor grades- (40 percent) include sketches and plans, written self-evaluations, participation in critiques, daily class participation. Note about late work: Due to the requirements of this course, it is imperative that students complete work in a timely manner. Deadlines will be given at the beginning of each six weeks. Work handed in late will have 10 points deducted per day.

Course Outline and Schedule: All Portfolios The first semester is devoted mainly to developing the Breadth section of the portfolio. Students will work with a variety of media and techniques to demonstrate technical skills, problem solving and development of original concepts. Midway through the first semester, students will be encouraged to determine the nature of their area of Concentration. During the second semester, the focus will primarily be on the Concentration section of the portfolio. Students will identify and be able to state clearly their intentions for this section of the portfolio. The body of work that is developed during the second semester will show evidence of planning and visual coherence. Mandatory critiques will be held throughout the year, with set dates for the entire class and informal, individual critiques on an as-needed basis. These critiques are intended to spur analysis, discussion and a sense of objectivity with regard to the work of students and peers. Course Overview Schedule Drawing Portfolio 2-D Design Portfolio Week 1 Expressive and Descriptive Line in Wet and Dry Media: Pen and ink wash drawings of organic objects. Contour and cross-contour drawings of organic and geometric shapes. (Resources: Line drawings by Matisse, Toulouse-Lautrec, Brice Marden, Chinese calligraphic drawings.) Line: Quality and Direction. Using black and white cut paper; create a dynamic composition that is composed entirely of varying thicknesses of line. Cubist Inspired Composition with Straight lines: Create a cut paper design using only red, white, blue, and black stars and stripes. Design must demonstrate effective use of space and focal points. (Resources: Analytical Cubism: Braques, Picasso, Boccioni) 3-D Design Portfolio Portfolio Review. Discuss previous work that could be used for the AP portfolio.

Week 2 Line as Value: Hatching, Cross-hatching and Scribbling: Pen and pencil drawings from observation. Focus is on creating full range of values with line. (Resources: Jacques de Gheyn, Hopper, Henry Moore drawings, Morandi etchings, Chris van Allsburg) Line and Composition: Black and white cut paper interior with a figure. Focus is on dynamic composition and expressive line. Line, Variety, Balance- Kinetic Sculpture: Using wire, string, and a variety of other media, create a kinetic sculpture that makes good use of balance and generates movement either mechanically or by other means. (Resource: Alexander Calder.) Week 3 Shape: Positive/Negative Space. Using brush and ink, create a still life drawing in which the values are reduced to black and white. Next, create a still life using black, white and a medium gray. (Resources: Diebenkorn, Sheeler, Kollwitz) Shape: Using templates to carve up picture plane. Create templates of organic and geometric shapes. Trace, overlap and shade with ebony pencil. Week 4 Shape: Positive/Negative Space in progress Shape: Using Templates to carve up picture plane in progress Continue Kinetic Sculpture. Create a regular grid with 2 squares that roughly approximates the overall format of the original. Recreate original image using only vertical and horizontal lines, allowing the detail to be semi apparent only in the focal point areas. (this will resemble images that are digitally blurred out- or pixilated) Recreate the color scheme used by the artist in the original image. (Resources: Mondrian) Continue work on Found Wood Relief sculpture. Week 8 Continue work on pixilated grid. Wrapped/Draped Cloth: Using a variety of drawing pencils, ranging from 4H 9B, create a rendering of an object that is wrapped in fabric, demonstrating your ability to accurately render drapery and capture a sense of volume. Humorous Self-Portrait Bust: Create a clay sculpture that exhibits your likeness in a humorous way. (Resource: Robert Arneson.) In-lieu of above, student might instead do the following: Skeleton Still Life: Create a prisma marker drawing using a skeleton with draped cloth and dramatic lighting. 15 Copyright Students are encouraged to work primarily from observation and imagination in all portfolios. Photographic resources are only to be used as reference materials. Copyright issues are discussed with students and they are made aware of the legal issues involved with working from another artists work. Summer Assignments Successful completion of the AP Portfolio hinges on students working throughout the summer, creating works of art, sketching ideas for future work, considering options for concentration topics and developing specific skills being used in the various portfolios. The following assignments are to be completed in the summer preceding the students participation in an AP class. Students who attend summer art programs at colleges and universities may submit the work done there as a substitute for the summer assignments. Drawing Summer Assignments Crumpled Paper Bag: Set up a still life composed of a crumpled paper bag. Use a light source that creates strong highlights and shadows (make sure you do not place your light source too close to the paper bag). Create an original drawing using black and white charcoal on buff paper. Cabinet Drawing: Create an original drawing using one of the following places as subject matter: a cabinet in you house, your closet, a drawer in your house. Do not tidy up or re-arrange your space. Draw what you see when you open the door/drawer. Media is open.

Aged Self-Portrait: Create an original drawing of yourself, but render your portrait as you imagine yourself in 20 years. This drawing will be graphite pencil on paper. Fruit in Window: Create an original drawing of a piece of fruit or vegetable place on a window sill. 2D Design Summer Assignments Black and White: Create an original composition on a support of your choice that is 18 x24 This piece must include all of the following materials in some way: Black paint, white paint, masking tape, newspaper, and charcoal. You have the option of making your composition abstract or non-objective. Warm/ Cool Cut Paper: Select an 8x10 sheet of colored construction and a contrasting color that is 12 x 18. Cut the smaller piece into various shaped and sized pieces and glued to larger piece in such a way that creates visual movement. All of the cut paper must be used. Distorted Portrait Collage and Drawing Collage facial features from various print sources, creating a face with distorted proportions. Use colored pencils to draw the same image onto 11x18 bristol paper. Use an analogous color scheme. Text and Value Collage Using magazines and newspapers collect pages of text with a variety of font sizes, styles and background values. Redraw a famous work of art 11x18 or larger. Recreate the image by collaging cut pieces of the text.

3-D Summer Assignments: Shoe Monument Create a monument to a specific person out of a shoe. Use both subtractive and additive processes. Natural Construction Using only locally found natural materials and objects create a site specific sculpture. Do sketches of your work in your sketchbook and document with a photograph. Collection of multiples Over the summer create a collection of 100 or more of the same object. These items may have some slight variations, and will be used during the first semester for a piece of art in the breadth section.
