1 NAME: PER: # DATE: Element Exercises: Line Directions: In the space below create an original nonobjective design that demonstrates your knowledge and understanding of the 6 main kinds of line and the 6 ways they can vary. Your design must include the following: 3 vertical, 3 horizontal, 3 diagonal, 5 curved, 3 zig-zag, and 3 wavy. No two may be alike in: length, width, degree of curve, value, and texture. Try to arrange or organize the in some interesting way. Do not number or label the in any way. Be creative. m&m s: pencil, ruler Exercise #2: Using LINE to create SHAPE: Geometric and Organic m&m s: pencil, ruler Directions: a. Create an original nonobjective composition that uses line to create shape and texture. b. The design of your composition must have 10 completely different shapes --5 geometric and 5 freeform or organic. c. You may start with either type of shape - geometric or organic. After you draw the first shape, alternate with the opposite type (example: geometric, organic, geometric, organic, etc.). d. The spaces between the shapes should be consistent and no more than an 1/8". e. Within each shape, create a different visual texture 10 total). You may use any handout in your art folder for ideas on creating visual texture. f. Fill the entire space with your shapes. g. Neatness is expected.

2 Exercise #3: Using LINE to represent the edges, ridges, and outline of a shape or form, aka contours and cross-contours. DIRECTIONS: Carefully copy the example images in the boxes provided. Be aware of size, and proportion. m&m s: pencil, ruler OUTLINE OUTLINE CONTOUR CONTOUR CROSS-CONTOUR CROSS-CONTOUR EXERCISE #4: Using line to create Value (and visual texture) Hatching - going in a single direction whose density (number of ) and proximity (amount of space between them) determine the the value (darkness or lightness) of an area. Crosshatching - hatching crossing to create value and visual texture. m&m s: Use Pilot V5 DIRECTIONS: Use hatching and cross-hatching techniques to complete the following Value Scales. Fill each square EVENLY AND CONSISTENTLY with the described value. If you use pencil, do not shade. Shading is working the pencil back and forth without lifting it from the paper. Hatching and crosshatching are individual. The Value Scale (A chart that demonstrates the changing VALUES of a TONE on a scale of steps running from dark to light.) Black- as dark as you can make it with the technique and tool you are using. Low Dark Dark High Dark Medium Low Light CROSS-HATCHING Light High Light Whiteleave blank HATCHING REMEMBER: You get a lighter value by using fewer further apart

3 EXERCISE #5 - Using Line to create Value and Visual Texture: The type of hatching or crosshatching used should be carefully considered. The direction and curvature of the line can greatly effect how the technique communicates meaning. For example, if you were trying to represent an object that is round you would want to use curved that complement each other. Complete the practice shapes below using the example illustrations. Hatching Crosshatching Follow the contour describe the form by using or directional marks that follow the contours. Complete the tree with that describe the roundness of the branches and trunk.

4 Exercise #6: Using Line to Create the illusion of Texture (aka: visual texture, implied texture) Carefully look over this handout for the numbered instructions (1-9) of what to do. You will be doing this drawing on 8 1/2" x 11" white paper using pencil. Follow the directions you see regarding the hand (1-7). After finishing the hand as described, use the information in numbers 8 & 9 to create a setting and background for the hand... be creative, of course (wood, glass, tree textures) Contour 7 Finish the hand by filling in the contour and crosscontour you see here. Cross- Contour 9
