1 EMPHASIS STILL LIFE Milito Art II

2 OBJECTIVES SWBAT / I CAN: Understand the ways in which artists create emphasis, & contrast in artwork Draw a realistic still life from reference & observation creating a focal point Use charcoal & chalk pastels to create emphasis using contrasting values & complimentary colors Reflect on artistic decisions in artwork through written artist s statement

3 EMPHASIS A principle of art that refers to the dominance or contrast of a feature or element of art within a work of art to stress a center of interest or focal point within a work of art

4 CONTRAST A principle of art referring to the arrangement opposite elements to create visual interest, excitement, or drama Light / Dark Complimentary Colors Rough / Smooth Textures

5 COMPLIMENTARY COLORS Colors that are opposite / across from each other on the color wheel Red Green Orange Blue Yellow - Purple

6 STILL LIFE A genre of art where the subject doesn t move Typically features Inanimate Objects Fruits Flowers

7 VALUE An element of art referring to the relative lightness / darkness of an object / area

8 VALUE SHADING TECHNIQUES Traditional: Hatching Cross Hatching Pointillism Blending Other Options: Zig Zags Swirls Contour Blocking Scribbles Make up your own!

9 SPACE Space: An element of art referring to the area in, around, or between, objects Positive Space: The area occupied by objects Made of shapes & lines Negative Space: The area void of objects Between shapes & lines The object itself

10 PHYSICAL SPACE 3D space (has height, width, & depth) Has a foreground, middle ground, & background Involves distance relationships & perspective Size, placement, & overlapping of objects

11 STILL LIFE WITH EMPHASIS DRAWING For this project you will be: Posing a still life as a group & taking a picture for reference Drawing a realistic still life from reference & observation Use charcoal & chalk pastels to create emphasis using contrasting value & complimentary colors

12 POSE THE STILL LIFE Arrange a simple but interesting still life using at least 3 objects Place the objects close enough that they can be framed to draw on the final paper & use the majority of the space Take a picture to use for reference later

13 SKETCH Sketch your still life Be sure to consider size, shape, & placement Make sure everything fits in the drawing & you are using most of your space Use contour lines to the where highlights & shadows appear

14 DRAW STILL REALISTIC STILL LIFE LIGHTLY draw your final draft using pencil Be sure your size, shape, & placement is accurate Use contour lines to mark where the highlights, shadows, & mid-tones will appear

15 CREATE A FOCAL SHAPE Finding the focal point Where the first place your eye goes when looking at your still life? What is the most interesting part of the still life? Draw a shape that covers about 25%- 50% of your still life around the focal point Shape can be geometric or organic

16 ADD VALUE On the outer frame / background add a range of value ( light & dark) Use at least 3 different value shading techniques (besides blending) Use black on shadows Use white on highlights

17 ADD COMPLIMENTARY COLORS On your focal point / shape blend complimentary colors Complimentary Colors Yellow Purple Orange Blue Red Green Use the darker / cool color in place of black Use the lighter / warm color in place of white

18 FINISHING TOUCHES & TURN IN Finishing Touches Smooth out blending Erase away blurs & smudges Final details Before You Turn it In Name & class on back Artist s signature on front (bottom right) Begin artist s statement

19 ARTIST S STATEMENT Using FULL SENTANCES respond to the following in an artist s statement about your drawing. Be sure to cite visual evidence, use your art vocabulary, & be specific. (25pts each) Describe the subject of your still life Explain how you created a focal point in your still life Explain how you used value & complimentary colors to create contrast Explain how you created emphasis in your drawing
