Level: Beginner to Intermediate Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level: 7.2 Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease: 62.6 Drawspace Curriculum 7.1.A6-8 Pages and 17 Illustrations Curly Camilla the SEAHORSE Outline a seahorse with mixed line-weights, draw her eye and hair, and add shading with hatching lines Supplies: paper, 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils, pencil sharpener, sandpaper block, vinyl and kneaded erasers This activity has three sections: Sketch Seahorse Proportions Use Wiggly Lines to Outline Contours Add Shading with Hatching Lines and Solid Tone ArtSpeak Drawing space: The specifi c perimeter in which a drawing is rendered. A drawing space can be the shape of a sheet of paper or a shape outlined on paper, such as a rectangle. Proportion: The relationship in size between two or more components of an artwork. Sketch Seahorse Proportions 1. Use an HB pencil to lightly outline a rectangular drawing space (Figure 1) approximately 6 by 10.5 in (15.2 by 26.7 cm). A smaller drawing space in proportion to these sizes works just as well. 2. Add tiny dots at the halfway points of each side to help you accurately draw proportions. Figure 1
2 7.1.A6: Curly Camilla the Seahorse 3. Press gently with an HB pencil to connect the halfway points vertical and horizontally (Figure 2). Figure 2 You now have four smaller rectangles inside a large rectangle. 4. Lightly sketch a circular shape in the upper left rectangle as Camilla s head. Tip! Before you draw each line, examine relevant illustration(s) and identify the: location of the line as compared to the sides of the rectangles. direction(s) in which the line curves. length of the line as compared to the sides of the rectangles. Figure 3 5. Render a proportionately accurate sketch of Camilla. Follow along with Figures 3 to 6. Examine each illustration in sequence before you lightly sketch the lines.
7.1.A6: Curly Camilla the Seahorse 3 Tip! Figure 4 Always place a piece of clean paper under your hand as you draw. Each time you work on a new section, remember to move your paper so it stays under your hand. This prevents you from smudging your drawing, and protects the paper from the oils in your skin. Figure 5 As an Aside Seahorses use their curly tails to hold onto plants, coral, and one another in much the same way as humans use their hands. In addition, they swim upright (not horizontally).
4 7.1.A6: Curly Camilla the Seahorse 6. Use the edge of a vinyl eraser to carefully erase the outlines of the rectangles. Figure 6 7. Redraw any sections of the seahorse that might have been erased. 8. Take time to practice drawing wiggly lines before you continue to the next section (Figure 7). Use different grades of pencils, sharp and rounded pencil points, and varying amounts of pencil pressure. The seahorse is outlined with these types of lines. (Peek ahead to Figures 8 and 9 on the next page.) Figure 7 ArtSpeak Mixed line-weight: A single contour line made up of a combination of different lineweights (such as thick, thin, light, and/or dark).
7.1.A6: Curly Camilla the Seahorse 5 Figure 8 Use Wiggly Lines to Outline Contours 9. Pat your unicorn sketch with a kneaded eraser until the sketch lines are light (but still visible). 10. Neatly outline Camilla with mixed lineweights (Figures 8 to 10). Figure 9 Before you draw, closely examine the outside edge of the tail, the frontal section of the body and tail, and the small curly section at the end of the tail. Even though Camilla is called a sea horse, don t think of horses when you are drawing her. Figure 10 Your memories of actual horses may influence the lines you draw. Rather, focus only on the lines themselves and the beauty of their curves.
6 7.1.A6: Curly Camilla the Seahorse 11. Outline her curly hair (Figure 11). 12. Draw her lovely eye (Figures 12 and 13). Don t miss the tiny circle that represents a highlight. 13. Use a 6B pencil to shade in the pupil of her eye. Figure 11 Figure 12 Figure 14 Figure 13 Add Shading with Hatching Lines and Solid Tone ArtSpeak Highlight: A small section of a drawing subject that is rendered with white or a very light value to identify the brightest area where light bounces off its surface. Highlights are more pronounced on shiny or glistening surfaces than dull or matte surfaces. Iris: The colored circular section of an eyeball surrounding the pupil. Pupil of an eye: The dark circular shape within the iris that expands or constricts under different lighting conditions. Technique: A wellknown method of accomplishing a particular activity or task (such as a specific way to render shading). Hatching: A series of straight or curved lines (called a set) drawn closely together to give the illusion of values. Depending on the shading effects desired, the individual lines in hatching sets can be far apart or close together. 14. Use straight hatching lines of different lengths to add shading to Camilla s body. Refer to Figures 14 and 15.
7.1.A6: Curly Camilla the Seahorse Use a rounded point on an HB pencil to shade in the irises of her eyes and sections of her hair. Figure 15 Refer to Figures 16 and 17. Figure 16
8 7.1.A6: Curly Camilla the Seahorse Figure 17 Challenge! Use your imagination and any techniques you wish to create your own original seahorse. Refer to the first section of this activity (Sketch Seahorse Proportions) to help you get started.
