Each Day will be split into two parts, an in studio discussion of materials and techniques, and painting on location in the seacoast area. Painting & Drawing in the Studio SA 8 DRAWING THE FIGURE WITH EXPRESSION Dustan Knight, 5 Weeks Tuesday 6 9 (June 1-29) Tuition $200 Model Fee $70 This expressive figure drawing class emphasizes the vitality and movement of the human figure. We will use charcoal and newsprint to work fast and intensely from a live model. This class will review anatomy and proportions but focus more on the expressive qualities innately present in the figure. Work by famous expressive artists like Degas, Kathe Kollowitz, Otto Dix, Modigliani, Picasso and Matisse will be discussed and analyzed as we try to understand the emotional power of their art. Final work may involve longer poses with individual interpretations or sketches for works in other mediums (like sketches for paintings). All levels of students invited. Loads of fun, stimulating and high energy. SA 9 BOTANICAL DRAWING WITH COLORED PENCIL Carol Morley, 6 Weeks Wednesday 1 4 (June 2 July 7) Tuition $240 Plant Fee $6 Flowers and fruits have some of the most exquisite forms and colors in nature. Explore the beauty of plants through observation, drawing and color rendering. This course will focus on the process of how to make a colored botanical art work from start to finish. You will be guided through the different stages of sketching and drawing and how to problem solve applying color. Plan your choices ahead by making a colored palette of your subject. Find out what combination of colors make the best highlight colors of petals or shadows of leaves. Learn how versatile colored pencils are and what techniques will make great textures and details to enhance your art work. SA 10 PAINTING THE FIGURE IN THE ENVIRONMENT Christopher Pothier, 8 Weeks Thursday 2 5 (June 3 July 29- no class July 8)) Tuition $285 Model Fee $90 This oil painting class focuses on placing the figure in a setting, outdoors (weather permitting) or indoors, to achieve a specific mood. In the outdoor setting, we would place the clothed figure in a garden setting, with trees in the distance, and paint the scene as we see it. For the indoor setting, we will stage the model with props. The idea of making a complete painting, along with the environment in which the model is placed, is essential for this class. Not only will we focus on the technical aspects of painting the figure, but also realize the importance of the space which surrounds it.

3 SA 11 PORTRAIT PAINTING IN OIL Christopher Pothier, 8 Weeks Thursday 6-9 (June 3 July 29- no class July 8) Tuition $285 Model Fee $80 Materials list sent upon registration The role of the painted portrait in the world of art is an extraordinary one. From the ancient Romans in Pompeii and the early Egyptians to Hans Holbein and John Singer Sargent, the portrait serves humanity by letting us see into the soul of the subject in the most intimate manner. In this class, we will begin by studying the basic components of the face and head using simple tonal studies and minimizing color. We will explore the way other artists have interpreted the portrait and possibly come up with some original ideas as well. The focus will be on eliminating the edges, softening and sculpting the features to make the portrait truly come alive. Color will be strongly emphasized. SA 12 THE CREATIVE SOUL: DRAWING, COLLAGE, PAINTING Marilene Sawaf, 6 Weeks Wednesday 6 9, June 23 July 28 Tuition $240 Learn to use Art and composition skills, drawing, collage, paintings (gouache and acrylics, inks, oil pastels and watercolor) to unleash the creative part of your soul that never had a chance to express itself. Using old photographs, art books, magazines, and favorite photographs as resources in the process, we will paint with acrylic, gouache or inks, watercolors and oil pastels, on a variety of Art papers, clayboard or canvas. We will compose different images on paper or canvas trying to be creative and obtain new results. SA 13 FIGURE DRAWING Cate Aichele, 5 Weeks Tuesday 6 9 July 6 August 3 Tuition $200 Model Fee $70 Come and experience the joy of figure drawing. Working extensively from the live model and using a classical proportional system we will strive to enhance our ability to visualize the figure in terms of its inherent three dimensional forms. These shapes, planes, and masses then become part of the vocabulary for developing a personal system or language for organizing the figure. Both intensive studio figure drawing, and working from shorter poses to long poses will enable the student to build on this language of form and illusion. There will be ongoing individual critiques as well as general instruction in anatomy, proportion, and design issues in rendering the figure. Beginners as well as more advanced draftsmen and women welcome. SA 14 FIGURE IN CLAY Christopher Gowell, 6 Weeks Tuesday 1-4 (June 1 - July 6) Tuition $240 Model & Clay Fee $90 Sculpture & Dry Stone Wall An introduction to sketching the nude in clay, this class begins with quick, observational modeling techniques to describe the human figure before extending the poses for a more studied rendition. Life models are used throughout the course to aid in the study of proportion and basic anatomy. Students will learn to prepare pieces for kiln firing. This class is suitable for beginners as well as more advanced sculptors who wish to work quickly and intensively with the live model. Firing pieces costs a penny a cubic inch in the Sanctuary Arts kiln.
