We accept the following credit/debit cards: Visa Discover MasterCard American Express When are Workshops offered? The first student sets the date & time by coordinating with the art instructor. Workshop are scheduled at least 3 weeks out, then the current Scheduled Workshops Calendar is promoted on our website, via blasts, on Facebook and available in print at the Lab and on local bulletin boards. Registration Procedures (Form on Page 14) You must pre-register & pre-pay in advance before we will schedule a Workshop. All registrations are considered confirmed upon completion. You will not receive further confirmation. Therefore, it is your responsibility to record all registration information to ensure attendance on the correct date and time. If a workshop for which you have registered is full, postponed or cancelled, you will be notified. Be assured that Workshops (except Guest Artist Workshops) will not be canceled due to a lack of students, so you may occasionally enjoy 1-on- 1 instruction. Waiting List Once the instructor s maximum enrollment is reached, names will be placed on a waiting list. Cancellations If an emergency arises and a class must be canceled, we will make every effort to contact enrolled students. With the exception of Guest Artist Workshops, no workshop will be canceled due to a lack of students. REFUND POLICY 100% if we cancel class. If you cancel more than 7 days before the first day of the workshop workshop & material fees are fully refunded. If you cancel less than 7 days before the first day of the workshop material fees are not refunded but workshop fees, minus a $10.00 fee will be refunded. No refunds after the first day of class. No refunds are given due to failure to attend class. FEES Workshop fees (& material fees, if applicable) are due, in full, upon registering. You are not considered registered until you pay these fees. Note: Unpaid fees hold up teacher pay-processing, so please be courteous to your instructor by enrolling and paying for classes right away. Participation Policies IAL is not responsible for unattended children on the premises. We do not assume responsibility if your child is dropped off early or picked up late. Please come into the building to see that your child gets to class. Parents are responsible for children brought onto the premises who are not registered in our classes. These classes allow students to explore different styles and techniques. For children: This is a great opportunity for creative play and helps your child expand their imagination and creativity. For teens: Art helps boost creative self-expression, improves problem solving skills and is great for raising your self-esteem. We can help guide and mentor you in a career in the arts. 6 _Art, General_ Basic Art Design (2 part series) This 2 day course will teach and review the elements and principals of design. Artists of all mediums, and art lovers, will enjoy this informative class. Come and learn what makes a strong composition and how to evaluate art objectively. This is great class for the artist who is considering our ongoing art classes or as a refresher course for those who want to begin creating again. Enrich your art with the basic fundamentals of good design. (2 days, 2 hours each) Instructor: Daniel Hidalgo, Cost: $50.00, materials included, Class Size Limit: 10, Age: 16+ Artist Portfolios & Scholarships This FREE workshop is especially for our prospective Teen Mural Artists, but anyone may attend. Learn about a career in the arts & gain insight into the scholarship process. You will then make your own large portfolio. (2 hours) Instructor: Daniel Hidalgo. Cost: FREE, materials included, Class Size Limit: 10, Age: 13+ Pioneer Days Art Workshops The Idaho Art Lab offers an annual exhibit of artwork inspired by historic photographs of the Upper Snake River Valley. We will set you up at a computer in our Computer Lab to peruse our database of local historic photos. The image you wish to create from will be photo copied (B&W) for you. Stay and work on your artwork with others inspired by our history! Cost: $6.00, includes 3 printouts, Class Size Limit: 11, Age: 16+ Pioneer Days Art Exhibit is July 22 August 12 Opening Reception: Friday, July 25, 5:00 8:00 p.m. Art Submission Deadline: Saturday, July 12, 9:00 p.m. _Cartoon Animation_ Cartoon Animation To teach you how to create classical animated cartoons, we will begin with a basic shape drawn on a light table the bouncing ball. Once your cartoons are complete, we will scan your drawings to create a "pencil test." This class will teach you what you need to know to continue to drop into the Lab to use our light tables and copy stand station. 7 _Ceramics_ Ceramic Glazing Techniques With the 1,000+ paint-your-own-pottery pieces available at the Idaho Art Lab, wouldn t you like to know some awesome techniques for glazing them? Try your favorite style out on a take-home ceramic piece. We will demonstrate styles from fun to elegant and awe inspiring! (2 hours) Instructor: Daniel Hidalgo, Cost: $30.00, materials included, Class Size Limit: 16, Age: 10+ Ceramic Mold Pouring & Shaping The Lab always needs help pouring & shaping ceramic mold casts for our Paint- Your-Own-Pottery store. Join us as we create fun figurines, bowls, vases or whatever strikes your fancy. Messy fun bring a friend! (2 hours or more) Cost: FREE, Class Size Limit: 6, Age: 13 & up _Drawing_ How to Draw a Realistic Horse We will demonstrate how to draw a horse from a photo to create a realistic sketch portrait. Photos of different horses will be available for you to choose from or bring a 4x6 or larger photograph of your own horse to work from. (2 hours) Instructor: Volunteer Artist, Class: $25.00, materials included, Class Size Limit: 10, Age: 13+ Eraser Effects Did you know that a single highlight often dictates the total range of tonal contrast throughout the drawing? Learn how to use your eraser to create unique effects. We will practice eraser effects on graphite, charcoal and colored pencil drawings. (2 hours) Instructor: Kara Hidalgo, Cost: $25.00, materials included, Class Size Limit: 10, Age: 12+ Drawing Lakes & Mountains Learn how to create the appearance of craggy peaks, snow capped mountain tops and observe how the lights and darks play on the mountains and in reflections in the water. 8 Perspective Drawing Students will learn several different approaches to drawing buildings, interiors, and objects in perspective, including linear perspective, sighting techniques and free-hand sketching. (2 hrs) Instructor: Daniel Hidalgo, Class: $25.00, materials included, Class Size Limit: 10, Age: 13+ Portrait Drawing (2 Part Series)_ Day 1: The first day of this 2 part workshop will focus on learning proper proportions, how to draw eyes, noses and lips. Bring a close-up photograph/photocopy, 5 x 7 or larger, or use one of ours. (2 hours) Day 2: Students will finalize a portrait drawing, learn about shading, shadows and how to draw the eyes to bring life into your drawing. You'll learn everything from generic shapes, to specific anatomy. Starting with a simple dragon, you'll progress to a more detailed dragon head, horns, wings, and finally a complete dragon. You will learn how to choose the right color tones, what colors make up brown, red, black and blond hair and how to create natural highlights and shadows. Please bring a photo reference if you d like or you can use one of the many we have on file. Learn the art of stone cutting, grinding, polishing to create beautiful jewelry, belt buckles or worry stones. Ask the Lab about our occasional rock hounding trips where we gather stones, bring them back to the Lab and slab them open to see what s inside. A great hobby! 9 _Metal Working_ Decorative Jewelry using Coins Cutting coins for jewelry is an art that can be fun and profitable. You can select coins with special dates like birth year or an anniversary date. These make unique gifts! Please note: This instructor prefers to schedule Friday & Saturday workshops but may be able to accommodate other days. Instructor: Michael Grayson, Class: $50.00, materials included, Class Size Limit: 9, Age: 12+ Intro to Lost Wax Casting Casting molten metal is one of the oldest metal techniques dating back thousands of years. You will learn how to work wax to create a ring, bead or small pendant. Your wax object will be cast in metal incorporating the lost wax casting technique. Please note: This instructor prefers to schedule Friday & Saturday workshops but may be able to accommodate other days. Day 1 (Friday): 3 hours. Sketch design and begin wax carving Day 2 (Saturday): 3 hours. Finish wax carving, lecture about the Lost Wax Method & prep for mold making. Casting: Casting will be done at the instructor s home studio in Rexburg. Students are invited to watch and learn about the casting process. Day 3: (Following Friday or Saturday): 3 hours. Your piece will have been cast in metal so you can do the finishing polish. You will learn how much is just enough to add to your under drawing, proper balance and composition and how to imply texture. (2 hours) Instructor: Volunteer Artist, Class: $15.00, materials included, Class Size Limit: 10, Age: 13+ Wall Murals: How to design & Paint Daniel has helped local artists create 17 murals around St. Anthony. This workshop will teach you how to create your own! You will see how to take a design or photograph and scale it to whatever wall mural size you desire, learn how to give the appearance of detail & depth and receive a basic overview of composition. We will discuss specialty paints used in outdoor murals & how to seal a mural. Interviews will begin in February, 2014.

10 Color Mixing The basics of color theory will be covered, but most of the class will be spent mixing color and making small paintings as examples of the expressive and communicative power of colors. This is a workshop for all painting media but we will be mixing with acrylic paint. Find out why it is the favorite medium of so many fine artists! 11 Color Landscapes in Pastel Learn how to create a luminous pastel landscape painting with depth and mood, create colors found in nature that compliment each other and achieve balance through composition and harmony. You will be surprised how well you can create portraits when you apply the simple rules, guidelines & tips provided in this workshop. Day 1: Black & White Portraits in Charcoal You will focus mostly on the under drawing, learn how to maintain proper proportions and receive tips on how to draw eyes, noses and lips. (2 hours) Day 2: Color Portraits in Pastel We will explore how to achieve depth of value using the full range of your palette to create life in your color portraits. Learn how to use watercolor s distinct characteristics to achieve the painting you visualize. You will learn about washes, blending, wet and dry and how to create crisp whites. 12 Easy Watercolor Portraits from Photos Using your favorite close-up portrait photograph, we will teach you how to easily turn it into a two-toned watercolor. We will be using the light tables to render the images so no drawing (or painting) experience is needed. In this workshop you will learn to use your camera s Special Modes to their greatest effect. Topics will include lighting and exposure, and the basic principles of photographic composition. They will learn to shoot creatively and try to capture something really special. Bring your old negatives (35mm to 4 x 5 ) or borrow ours. We will develop prints, create contact images and play with special effects. (2 hours) Instructor: Volunteer Staff, Cost: $30.00, materials included, Class Size Limit: 4, Age: 13+ Make a Pinhole Camera (2 part series) Grab a friend for this fun, informative workshop! You will create a pinhole camera and take photographs directly on photo paper then develop them in the darkroom. Participants will learn basic camera mathematics and principles, how to build cameras, and test exposures with paper negatives. After constructing a camera, students will then photograph outside and then head into the darkroom where they will develop their images. 13 Intro to Medium & Large Format Photography You will learn about the mechanisms of medium and large format film cameras using our 120mm & 4x5 view cameras. We will discuss why this traditional art medium is still in use today by fine art photographers and demonstrate how to develop film (up to 4 x 5 ) and prints in our darkroom. Take the Photography Darkroom workshop to engage in hands-on darkroom processing. Donate your unused digital, medium or large format camera so we can provide this program to all. _Pottery_ Pottery Lesson In this 1 hour lesson, you will learn how to wedge clay, center your clay on a potter s wheel and throw a basic vessel, PLUS 3 hours to play on the wheel. Wheelchair accessible. Instructor: Daniel Hidalgo, Cost: $35.00, materials included, Class Size Limit: 4, Age: 7+ Pottery Class (4 part series) Learn how to use the pottery wheel, from clay prep to finished pieces. In four classes, you will learn how to prepare your clay, center the clay & create a few pottery pieces, trim the bases, then finish your pieces off with glazes of your choice. (4+ hours instruction, 16 hours on the wheel with guided help) Week 1: Learn how to prepare your clay and throw a vessel Week 2: Trim your pieces, create feet or handles Week 3: Learn glazing techniques and glaze your pieces Week 4: Pick up finished pieces and play on the wheel! 14 _Print Making / Screen Printing_ Hand-Carved Block Printing Learn the beautiful and ancient process of printing by hand from master block printer, Daniel Hidalgo of Dung & Dunger Paper Arts Studio. Each student will work on carving a lino block and printing during the session, exploring the endless possibilities of printmaking. (3 hours) Instructor: Daniel Hidalgo, Cost: $35.00, materials included, Class Size Limit: 4, Age: 14+ Screen Printing Using our commercial screen printing lab, you can create anything from t-shirts to fine art. You will create a stencil, set up a screen for printing, prep the ink and the proper technique for applying ink to your art piece. (2-3 hours) Instructor: Volunteer Staff, Cost: $25.00, materials included, Class Size Limit: 4, Age: 14+ _Scroll Saw Woodworking_ Scroll Saw Woodworking Scroll saws have fine blades that can cut very intricate patterns in wood, from very basic lines and curves to complex, ornamental patterns.
