AT SNOW FARM YOU'RE NOT A STUDENT... YOU'RE AN ARTIST Our full immersion curriculum is based on small class size and one-on-one instruction. In professionally equipped studios and under the direction of practicing artist/instructors, students develop technical skills and their artist s voice. In a two- or four-week session, students and their teachers live and work together in creative community. STUDENTS Snow Farm Summer s students are a diverse group of young people between the ages of 14 and 18. Some arrive with specific goals and projects in mind; some seek the creativity they miss during the academic school year; and still others want to explore something brand new. All Snow Farm Summer students have one thing in common: they are passionate about creating. For anyone considering art school or a career in the arts, Snow Farm Summer is an excellent way to expand and develop a portfolio. Recent alumni have gone on to study at RISD, Alfred University, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and many other top level art programs. Many of our alumni are now established artists. No matter what they walk in the door with, our students leave with an unforgettable experience, lasting friendships, and real world skills. PROGRAM Maximum nine students per studio with two instructors. Students enroll in two studio classes each session. Students who attend both sessions can take four different subjects or double up on a favorite. Total instructional time equals 6 hours per day, more than any other program. Supervised open studio allows for self-directed work in both assigned studios. Other optional activities vary depending on student interest: trips to a swimming hole or ice cream stand, Frisbee, pick-up soccer games, music. Weekend schedule includes one-day workshop on Saturday with guest artists, Saturday evening campus-wide program for fun and relaxation, and Sunday field trip to a local museum, art gallery, or artist studio. Students, faculty, and staff live and work together in a community committed to respect, hard work, and authentic creative expression. Students live in simple double rooms in single-sex dorms with shared bathrooms. The dining hall is a focal point of daily life, serving home-cooked meals made with fresh local ingredients. INSTRUCTORS Our studio instructors are accomplished artists and educators from around the country. As working artists, they bring both technical expertise and real world experience to the classroom. Instructors live on campus and are a vital part of the thriving and supportive community created each summer. CHOOSE STUDIOS PER SESSION STUDIOS ARE FILLED AS APPLICATIONS ARE RECEIVED APPLY SOON! 1 FIRST SESSION JULY 1 JULY 14 Ceramics Metalsmithing & Jewelry Glassblowing Flameworking Painting & Drawing Printmaking CERAMICS Students in the Ceramics studio use a wide range of making and firing techniques to create functional pottery and experimental sculpture using traditional and contemporary forms. Students are directly involved in every aspect of the studio, from mixing glazes to loading and firing the kilns. The studio is equipped with nine high quality electric wheels, a slab roller, two large electric kilns, a raku kiln, a salt/soda kiln, and a Bailey gas reduction kiln. 1+ METALSMITHING & JEWELRY Using brass, copper, and silver, students in the Metalsmithing and Jewelry studio will explore the design and construction of metal jewelry and functional pieces from necklaces to spoons. Students will become comfortable with foundational fabrication and joining methods and will explore inlay, stone setting, and other decorative techniques. There will be an emphasis on designing objects of personal meaning. 1+ GLASSBLOWING The Glassblowing studio trains students in the ancient art of working with hot glass to create sculptural and functional objects. Our program emphasizes a strong foundation in traditional technique and form while providing an opportunity to explore contemporary boundary-pushing techniques. Students will produce a variety of forms including vessels, stemware and objects of their own design. The Glassblowing studio is equipped with a 10-pound furnace, three annealing ovens, and three glory holes. 1+ FLAMEWORKING In the Flameworking studio, the beauty of molten glass is up close and personal as students work on a desktop torch fueled by oxygen and propane. Colorful glass rods and clear glass tubes are melted and formed into objects such as beads, marbles, pendants, small vessels, and intricate sculpture. Previous students in this studio have created finished jewelry, a set of chess pieces, and a mancala game. Nine torches and three annealing kilns make for a fastpaced and productive studio PAINTING & DRAWING Students in the Painting and Drawing studio will be introduced to both traditional and contemporary techniques and will develop confidence with a wide variety of materials and tools. A firm grounding in technique - line, tone, composition and color will provide a foundation for experimentation and creative development. Students will study the human figure, forms in nature, landscapes, and still-life, and will produce portfolio-ready work. PRINTMAKING Students in our new Printmaking studio will explore a wide range of techniques including screenprinting, relief, intaglio, and a variety of experimental mono-printing methods. Working with oil and water-based inks, students will create original prints both by hand and with a press. Lessons will include creating and transferring drawings and images onto a block, plate or screen, paper preparation, and printing techniques.. While some familiarity with drawing is helpful, this class is open to all students interested in printmaking. 1 METAL SCULPTURE & FABRICATION Learning to shape and sculpt steel by cutting, drilling, grinding, forging, and welding, students in the Metal Sculpture studio are trained to use MIG welders, plasma cutters, bench grinders, and oxy-acetylene torches. This comprehensive course allows a comfortable balance between assigned and self-designed projects, and also encourages the use of found objects and collaborative projects. Students will create well-crafted, conceptually sound, and durable sculptures. OPTIONAL FEES _ Shuttle from Bradley Airport, Train or Bus Station: $50 each way _ Intersession (staying at Snow Farm between sessions): $10 APPLICATION PROCESS Apply now at New applicants must submit a personal statement, two letters of recommendation, a deposit, and application fee. Returning students do not need to submit letters of recommendation. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and all materials must be received before an application is considered. With the application, students will be asked for a first and second choice studio and two alternates. We will place every student in his/her first choice studio, unless that studio is full at the time of application. Apply early! First choice studios will be confirmed with acceptance to the program. Second studios will be determined based on student preference and availability and will be confirmed by May 10. All applications require a $500 deposit and a non-refundable $60 registration fee. The balance will be billed when the student is accepted in the program. Bills must be paid in full by June 1, 018. SCHOLARSHIPS Snow Farm Summer has a limited number of needbased scholarships. The deposit and application fee are not required when applying with a scholarship request. More information is available on our website. FAQ _ How many students are in each studio? There is a maximum of nine students with two instructors in each studio. Our low teacher-student ratio assures that every student receives individual attention and critique on their work. _ Can students take the same studio in the morning and afternoon? All students take two different studios. We will place every student in his/her first choice studio, unless that studio is already full at the time of application. Apply early! For the second studio, all students will be placed in one of his/her three alternate choices. _ What is the application deadline? The application timeline looks like this: Sept May: Applications accepted on a rolling basis. Apply early to guarantee your first choice studio. First choice studios confirmed with acceptance. March 15: Applications due for need-based scholarships. April 1: Scholarship awards announced. April 13: Priority Deadline for best studio choices. May 10: Second studios confirmed for all students. May 15: Last day to cancel with a refund. Health forms due. June 1: Full payment due. April 13 June 5: Applications accepted as space is available. _ Where are your students from? Our students come from New England and across the country and sometimes from around the world! Every year we welcome kids from as far as California and as close as Boston. _ What type of kids come to Snow Farm? All the students who come to Snow Farm have one thing in common they are passionate about art. Year after year, we see students form a safe, welcoming, and accepting community where they quickly make important friendships. _ Do you have a visiting day? In addition to drop off day and pick up, parents and family members are welcome to schedule a visit during the session. We ask that you let us know ahead of time so your childz won t be out on a field trip. Non-family guests are not permitted. _ How do you handle medical emergencies and students who take daily medication? We take student health and safety seriously and have a well-honed system in place. Our staff nurse reviews all the medical forms before any students arrive and will confer with families if there are any concerns. The nurse directs the daily medication schedule which is administered by the Assistant Director. Our on-call doctor is located just a couple miles down the road and provides excellent urgent care when needed. Our local hospital is in Northampton, about 15 minutes away. _ What is your cancellation policy? Students who wish to cancel can be fully refunded (less the application fee) until May 15, 018. After May 15, 018, there are no refunds for cancellation, late arrival, or early departure for any reason.
