2 2016 COURSE LIST Introductory to Digital Photography Petra Mala Miller This course is organized as a series of practical workshops designed to expand your understanding and enjoyment of digital photography. You explore a wide range of stimulating projects that help you develop photographic skill and creative sensibility. Topics include the camera, depth-of-field, colour, available and artificial light, and the use of post-production tools that help make your digital files into beautiful prints. This class is open to anyone with a desire to make better photographs. You will use your own camera. Laptop computers are provided for in-class use. Material Cost: $25-$30 Capturing Movement in Photography Petra Mala Miller (1 Day Workshop) Saturday February 20th & February 27th 9am - 3pm This one day workshop introduce several powerful and fun creative techniques to represent motion in still photographs: how to freeze movement, motion blur, time-lapse photography, sequence photography and cinemagraphs to create dynamic effects in and from still photographs. You will use your own digital camera and tripod. Laptop computers are provided for in-class use. A portable hard drive for storing digital files is recommended but not required. This class is open to beginners with basic knowledge of camera controls and to those with more experience. Material Cost: $10 Analogue Photography David Miller + Petra Mala Miller This seven-week course introduces you to the creative potential and unique qualities of analogue photography. You learn how to expose and process black and white film, print your negatives as positives in a darkroom and how to make cyanotypes. Topics include exposure, film development, contrast control, black and white printing, non-silver processes, Lomography and the iron-salt process commonly called cyanotype. You will use your own film cameras and are responsible for the costs of photographic film and paper. Material Cost: $50 - $100 Intermediate Ceramics Introduction to Crystalline Glazes Leigh Merritt Artisan Leigh Merritt believes the crystalline glaze process is unlike any other. It s both challenging and beautiful, resulting in breathtaking pieces that will ignite creativity in any individual. This intimate and hands-on class will teach you about the ins and outs of crystalline glazes, making pots and catchers on the wheel and how to attach catchers. If you re someone with previous pottery experience then this exclusive class is for you! Material Cost: $40 (approximate price per box of clay)

3 Traditional Maliseet Drum Making Angela Beek Thursday February 18th, 25th and March 3rd 6pm -9pm Thursday March 17th, 24th and 31st (3 Day Workshop) According to artisan Angela Beek every drum a person constructs has it s own unique voice and that voice allows for a deep connection with its maker. Those interested in learning the traditional skill of Maliseet drum making are encouraged to sign up for one of these wonderful three week courses. You will be walked through designing, constructing and painting an original Maliseet drum. You will also learn lacing, finishing techniques and how to construct a distinctive drum-beater. Material Cost: $120 You can Draw Anything Marcus Kingston This seven-week class will make a confident drawer out of any individual! You are exposed to the basics of drawing from life as well as drawing from source imagery. Classes will also focus on linear/intuitive/atmospheric perspective, value, shading, portraiture, landscape and still life. Vivid colours and textures will also be worked into various works. This class is perfect for a beginner wanting to start from the ground up, or for someone more advanced looking for a challenge. Material Cost: $20-$25 Depending on the variety of papers and mediums used Increasing Pottery Skills Chris Colwell This popular course enables students with clay experience to expand their knowledge in pottery and practice new ceramic techniques. You focus on increasing wheel throwing and trimming methods, and you may also acquire decorating skills. Learning to attach and build by hand will also be touched on. Don t miss out on this great opportunity to work with local artist Chris Colwell and nurture your inner potter. Material Cost: $40 (approximate price per box of clay 1-2 boxes may be necessary) Painting with Acrylics and Mixed Media Exploration Ron Leger This exciting and vibrant course will cover basic colour theory: tints, shades and intensity with a focus on how to use this knowledge in your personal work. Art History examples will be used as well as sample projects that will inspire participants. If you ve ever wanted to discover new methods related to acrylics and mixed media than this is your class! Visual artist and high school art teacher Ron Leger has over 25 years of experience and would love to impart his wisdom on you! This course is recommended to intermediate level participants. Material Cost: $15-$25 (depending on enrolment numbers) Hand Building Pottery Valerie Jean Have you ever wanted to know how to make a variety of unique and interesting pottery pieces using clay slabs? Well this is your course! You will use basic pottery tools and equipment such as a slab roller and rolling pin to create a wide range of products. Projects produced in this course include a platter, canteen, mug/tumbler, jewellery box and ornaments. This course would be great for beginners or those with previous pottery experience. Material Cost: $40 (approximate price per box of clay)

4 Creative Photography with Drew Gilbert Drew Gilbert This course will help you to learn to be more creative both visually and technically with your Digital Single Lens Reflex. You will learn to use technical camera controls to make creative images that are unique and personal. The class sessions will include, in-class exercises, group photo critiques, brainstorming, trouble shooting, computer processing and making prints. Students must have a DSLR camera and come with a USB storage device for your images (tripods are recommended but not required). Material Cost: $10 (printing costs) Introductory Ceramics Jessica Kelly This hands-on course facilitated by artist Jessica Kelly is designed for people with little or no experience in pottery. You will learn basic throwing techniques on the wheel such as centering and trimming. You will be taught this timeless craft while enjoying a small class environment. You will even be exposed to the enjoyment of decorating your finished piece. Material Cost: $40 (approximate price per box of clay) Introduction to Jewellery Kristianne LeBreton In this seven-week program you will learn the basics of jewellery making. Techniques such as cutting, texturing, polishing, soldering, riveting and assembling will make this course desirable to any budding jeweller or imaginative individual. A small class size combined with NBCCD s eclectic metal arts studio is sure to ignite your artistic fire. Depending on how imaginative and productive you are, you may leave this course with a multitude of finished jewellery pieces. Material Cost: $50-$75 (approximate cost for 3 projects additional materials may be needed based on what students decide to create) Print IT! Kent Jensen Artist Kent Jensen will be opening up NBCCD s textile studio to show you the funky and colourful world of creative printing. Participants will acquire a basic hands-on understanding of the silk screening process through making silk screens, crafting a painterly print, creating a cut out print, test prints and working hands-on with their instructor and materials. You won t want to miss out on this unique opportunity to Print IT! Material Cost: $45 (price could vary with size and number of pieces created) The Wonderful World of Water Colours Jane Geurts Watercolour is a graceful and translucent medium. Light emanates from underneath the paints surface, which connects the viewer to the multiple layers of connected colours. This seven-week course will teach fundamental principles that relate to great designs and compositions, as well as techniques specific to watercolour. You will have the opportunity to put these principles and skills into practice. This class is perfect for any creative beginner or for those with a slightly higher skill level. Material Cost: $50-$75 (depending on the amount of supplies purchased)

5 Learn to Sew! Rachel MacGillivray (2 Day Workshop) Saturday February 20th & February 27th 9am - 3pm Saturday February 20th In this one-day class, you will learn how to sew while constructing a blanket top for Women in Transition House. Using cloth and fabric found around the house, you will learn the basics of cutting and sewing different materials and the fabrication of an heirloom quilted blanket. This class will bridge learning and community engagement. You will finish the day knowing how to make your own blankets, while also knowing you have helped those in need. Material Cost: $10 (please bring with you discarded fabric for re-purposing such as clothing, sheets, linens etc). Saturday February 27th This one-day follow up class will teach you how to finish blanket toppers (which were made in the previous class). You will use a uniquely designed blanket top to learn how to apply batting and backing, bind edges and quilt tops to complete a finished piece. (Participation in both courses is not necessary as students may opt to take one or both of these offerings). Material Cost: $10 Learn to Spin! Rachel MacGillivray Have you ever wanted to learn how to spin? Now is your chance! You will learn how to use a spinning wheel to spin different fibres and make and design your own beautiful hand spun yarns. You will get lots of practice on professional spinning wheels as well as learn how to dye fibre, blend colours and combine different materials. In addition, those enrolled will acquire skills in preparing and creating custom yarns. No prior experience is necessary. Material Cost: $30-$60 (depending on productivity of students) Silk Painting = Happiness Allison Green Painting on silk is a magical experience. Liquid dye spreads out from the tip of your brush and fills the surrounding cloth with colour. You will use stunning dye effects to create designs inspired by nature and your own special photographs. You will then learn how to display or wear your finished fabrics. If you ve ever wanted to design and make your own custom accessories then sign up today! Material Cost: $65 Mix it Up Explorations in Mixed Media Carol Collicott Hamilton (1 Day Workshop) Saturday February 20th & February 27th 9am - 3pm In this course you will learn how to prepare paper, apply different techniques such as mark making, layering, printing and be conscious of the relationship between compositions and content. Participants will be able to produce one or two finished works, depending on the complexity of your pieces. No experience is required for these one-day workshops! Material Cost: $15-$20 Introduction to Traditional Aboriginal Ash Basketry Students will learn the basic techniques in making two kinds of Traditional Ash baskets. In addition to learning the techniques, students will also get an overall understanding of the history of this traditional fine craft and demonstration of the process involved in material harvesting. Materials Cost: $60

6 Course Payment Full Payment of course fees are due at the time of registration. HST is charged on all registrations fees. There will be no reduced rate in tuition fees for students who miss class(es) or register late. THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES APPLY TO ALL LEAP COURSES MATERIAL COSTS Material costs are suggested estimates only (upon arrival your instructor will inform you of what materials you will need, either in the form of a purchasable kit or through purchase from the NBCCD supply store). REFUNDS A full refund will be issued if requested, within five business days prior to the first day of class. A prorated refund will be issued in the event of a withdrawal due to medical reasons. The prorated amount will be refunded to the portion of the course not yet completed after the request to withdrawal has been received. In the event of a prorated refund, tuition will be divided by the total number of course hours, times the number of course hours not yet completed. All courses are conditional on environment. If a course is cancelled, a 100% refund will be issued, or you may choose to register in another course that is being offered, provided the class is not full. All students will be contacted if a course is cancelled. CANCELLATIONS If a class is cancelled due to inclement weather, or another unfortunate circumstance, every attempt will be made to notify participants in advance. Participants will be notified of the rescheduled class time during their next session, or by phone or . PARKING Parking for courses offered at the college follows city of Fredericton parking by-laws. There is no charge for public parking in the downtown area after 5 p.m. on weekdays.
