It s been seven long months with a lot reflection, meditation and tears; do I just throw in the towel or try again. Just when things were getting very discouraging, this little space became available. Although very different from our previous locations, I feel very comfortable here and I will continue to do the two things I love the most, playing with fabric and teaching. Learn to draft your own layout, discuss techniques required to complete the various sized blocks, including slab blocks and easy foundation paper piecing (FPP). Her Gypsy Wife Quilt is absolutely amazing! This introductory class will provide you with necessary information and details to get started on your own Gypsy Wife quilt. Learning materials provided in this first class will include foundation paper piecing patterns and a stylized binder to house all your notes to keep you organized. Join for this getting started session and begin your own Gypsy Wife quilt journey. 5 EARTHLY GOODS NEWS page 5 Rotary Cutting Basics + More Wednesdays, April 11 or April 25 OR Friday, June 8 OR Saturdays, April 14, May 12 or June 30, 9-4pm $55, includes fabric & handouts Quilting By Degree Classes Learn basic rotary cutting techniques as well as that perfect 1/4 seam allowance and proper pressing methods to start your quilting journey in the right direction. The basic rotary cutting skills of safety, maintenance and handling of the Olfa cutter, mat and Omnigrid rulers will be covered as you learn to measure and cut geometric shapes and strips quickly, accurately and safely with no templates. With a few simple exercises, you will find your perfect 1/4 seam allowance, crucial for accurate piecing and quilt construction. Finally, you will learn proper pressing techniques which will help you achieve those perfect blocks we all aim for! Pre-requisite: NONE Primarily Patchwork Block Construction Saturdays, April 28 & May 5, 9-4pm $98, includes handouts This sampler-style quilt top is an excellent course for the beginning quilter or those wanting to update their quilting skills. Use the rotary cutter to practice accurate cutting, sewing a perfect ¼ seam allowance and proper pressing techniques. You will receive guidance from your instructor to build skill and confidence in making your quilt blocks. Some homework is required. Instructions included to complete 12 blocks. Pre-requisite: Rotary Cutting Basics & More Primarily Patchwork Quilt Construction Saturdays, May 19 & 26, 9-4pm $98, includes handouts Learn to accurately square up your quilt blocks and to add sashing and borders without puckers. Choose from a straight set or diagonal set and take on the added challenge of mitered corners! Batting types for your particular project will be discussed. You will complete the course with your quilt layered, basted and ready for quilting. Applies to six block quilts only. Some homework will be required. Pre-requisite: Rotary Cutting Basics Foundation Paper Piecing Wednesday, June 6, 9-4 OR Thursday, May 24, 9-4pm OR Friday, April pm OR Saturday, June 23, 9-4pm $55, includes pattern Sometimes called foundation piecing, or paper piecing, this technique consists of sewing pieces of fabric on to a paper foundation, thereby allowing the quilter to construct complicated patterns easily and accurately. If you love long, slender, pointy spikes with precise piecing, you will discover how quickly you will be able to create magic with this technique. Pre-requisite: Rotary Cutting Basics & More Quilt Basting Saturday, June 9, 9-4pm $49 With your Primarily Patchwork Quilt top completed; the steps you take to make a quilt sandwich depends on the type of quilting that you plan for the project. We will discuss options for machine, hand and long arm quilting. Learn to secure the quilt backing, layer the batting and pin or hand baste the quilt sandwich to eliminate puckers and pleats. Quilt Binding Thursday, June 28 OR Saturday, April 21, 9-4pm $64, includes kit & handouts Well finished edges give a polished look to quilts and hangings. Learn a number of finishing techniques including how to measure your project, calculate binding yardage and apply binding strips with mitered corners and a clean joint finish. Friday, June 1, 9-4pm $95 (includes kit) + book Wanda Quilting by Degree Program and Grad Club Quilting By Degree Classes Introduction to the 24 segment Ives Colour Wheel, explore the concepts of Pure Colour, Tint, Shade and Tone scales. Learn the important principles of value. Use the colour wheel as a tool for making harmonious colour choices. Study the five most important colour plans. By exploring the use of colour in this first class of a two part series, you will learn to use Class Registration Procedures Please read carefully before registering for class! Register in person, at the store or by phone Class fees are required at time of registration; classes are filled on a first-come basis with full payment Classes will be cancelled and a full refund issued if insufficient registration No refunds, credits or class transfers if you are unable to attend you may send someone in your place Material/preparation sheets are to be picked up prior to class date; we would be happy to your supply list upon registration Materials must be purchased before class; Earthly Goods quality fabrics and notions are preferred Classes begin on time, please come prepared Our location has stairs and assistance is available for caring sewing machines and accessories Due to allergies, please refrain from wearing perfume or scented products in class Our Quilting by Degree Program consists of in-depth classes, providing a total of 78 hours of expert instruction in quilt making basics. Each class taken is recorded in a computer database for each participant. These records are kept on file until completion of the full degree program, with no time constraints. After completion of the Quilting by Degree program, you will be invited to attend Grad Club meetings. Each Grad Club event is a visual potpourri packed with ideas to inspire you; Show and Tell, the featured graduate, 'how-to' presentations, 'what's new' at Earthly Goods, connections to our sewing roots and much more! and Wanda always have something exciting and inspiring to share!
