Summer Art Program 2017! Program coordinator James Folger Sr. BS MEd, and Art Majors: Ryan King, and Jack Yarrows are pleased to offer personalized art instruction for Elementary students (entering Grades 2-5) Middle school students (entering Grades 6-9) and High School/Adults students (entering Grades 10-Adult) The 2017 edition of the Summer Art Program is proud to feature Somers High School s own Transition Coordinator & Special Education teacher, Sharon Yarrows. Ms. Yarrows will be present to lend her expertise in classroom in management and to help promote a fun and engaging environment for this program! The schedule will run for four weeks from July 10 th through August 4th. The courses will be offered in week-long or 4-day sessions with morning (9:00a-11:30 am) and afternoon (12:00-2:30 pm) schedules. All classes will be held in the Elementary School, in rooms TBA. If you choose to take a morning and afternoon class we will have a supervised ½ hour lunch break students need to bring their own lunch. The building closes early in the summer so please plan for prompt pick-up at 2:30! Prices and dates for each class are listed in the descriptions. All classes have a separate materials fee to be paid directly to the teacher at the first class. The materials fees include ALL project materials and equipment use. (Paint/pencils/ink etc., paper, canvas, polymer clay, scratch board, etc.) Classes are limited to 20 students each, and will be cancelled with an enrollment of less than 3. PLEASE NOTE: We will adjust our teaching to the level of the individual. No one is too inexperienced or too good to learn and have fun
The schedule will run as follows: Week 1 (July 10-14) Morning session: 9-11:30 AM Making Model Rockets 1: Middle and up Start your camp experience off with a bang as we celebrate independence week. Boys and girls alike will enjoy constructing a model rocket to launch at weeks end. Using ordinary household materials, each participant will cut, paint, mold, arm and launch his or her own model rocket. While waiting for our rockets to dry, there will be a variety of models such as tanks, superhero s, cars, or papier-mache hot air balloons that students can choose to paint and glue together to take home because the rockets will not be coming back. All safety guidelines will be followed. Robo-Monsters: Elementary Using some imagination and glue we will turn old computers, CD-ROMS and mechanics into frightful, and ART-full monsters! Give your monster some robotic arms, legs, and a head, and watch it come to life with a little bit of paint and some eyes! If you like building monstrous creatures then this is the class for you! Instructor: Jack Yarrows
Afternoon session: 12 noon-2:30 PM Animals, Animals, Animals: Middle & Above No matter your skill level, you will create a detailed professional looking animal portrait to hang on the wall to be admired by all. Using scratchboard and other traditional fine arts mediums create a picture of your favorite animal from a photograph you have taken, or a diagram provided for you. It could be your pet or a wild animal. In the end, you will create a frameable work of art to hang on the wall. Nature Art: Elementary Everything and anything that has to do with nature! Paint and sculpt using rocks, plants, sticks, seashells, and other natural materials- even some that we will go pick out for ourselves! Throughout the week we will use a combination of these materials and different art mediums to create anything that we can imagine; examples including fish, bugs, animals, flowers, people, and so on. Instructor: Ryan King
Week 2 July Morning session: 9-11:30 AM Comics, Cartoons and Illustration 1: 5 th grade and Up Working with pencils, ink, markers and colored pencils, make a poster of your favorite comic book character such as: Spiderman, the Hulk, or Supergirl to hang on your wall. Study a vintage marvel collection from the 70 s. Bring your own comic or graphic novels and we ll collaborate to design and create your own comic book or comic strip. We will even create a rudimentary animation. Mix it Up! Crazy Collage and Mixed Media: Elementary -6 th grade Together we will cut up old print media and throw it in the air. Then each of us will pick up the pieces and paste them in a huge collaborative collage that forms a new image. In addition, everyone will cut out their favorite images and glue them into new and interesting orientations! We can also paint onto the collages or draw onto them after the glue has dried. Paper and cardboard can also be added afterwards to make our collages turn into 3D works of art! Instructor Jack Yarrows
Afternoon session: 12 noon-2:30 PM Flower Power!: Elementary & Middle In this class, students will be able to make amazing works of art inspired by nature and flowers! Using chalk pastel, watercolor, and tempera paint, we will learn how to make beautiful flowers and scenes from nature. In addition, while the paint dries students will be able to explore the outdoors in search of their own wonders of nature to make a masterpiece! Instructor Jack Yarrows Abstract Art: Elementary Learn how to make your very own masterpieces of abstract art! Make wild looking drip and splatter paintings on one day and crisp, geometric paintings the next! We will learn about a variety of methods in abstract art using a multitude of materials and mediums. Experience the diversity and enjoyment that abstract art has to offer! Instructor: Ryan King $105 ($15 materials supplies)
Week 3 July Morning session: 9-11:30 AM Creature Features: Elementary Using a variety of mixed mediums such as colorful self-hardening foam clay, pencils, markers, and papier-mache- design and create fanciful creatures, monsters, or your favorite animals from the past or present. Whether you want to create an army of dinosaurs to carry around, horses to pretend with, draw a story of a maiden flying on a dragon, or just a Koala to cling to your pencil, this is the class for you. Trendy Painting: Middle through adult For those who love to paint this is your class! We will explore different styles of painting, while also playing around with some contemporary styles. We will also learn more about color relationships and have fun doing it by working in extreme color to make paintings that really pop! We will have some exciting and unusual subjects to paint and by the end of the class, you will surprise yourself at how fun painting can be! Instructor: Jack Yarrows
Afternoon session: 12 noon-2:30 PM Polka Dots, Helium Balloons and Rockets: Elementary Have fun creating spatial and moving images. Using all the space provided, including the outdoors, we will create beautiful environments to walk through and admire. String lights, cut and paste decorations and make a boring space into a dynamic and interesting surrounding. The goal is for your folks to say, WOW! when they come pick you up. Meanwhile, we will be creating hot air balloons and model rockets to launch outdoors. Oh, boy I can t wait! All safety guidelines will be followed. People and Portraits: Middle School and up Learn how to draw and paint pictures of yourself and others in this class of portraits, self-portraits, and people! Delve into the guided lessons in creating the face and all of its features. We will not only make pictures of ourselves but of each other as well! If you want to learn how to draw and/or paint yourself and other people, this is the class for you! Instructor: Ryan King $105 ($15 materials supplies)
WEEK 4 July 31-August 4 Morning session: 9-11:30 AM Comics, Cartoons and Illustration 2: 5 th grade up Working with pencils, ink, markers and colored pencils, and crayons make a poster of your favorite comic book character such as: Spiderman, the Hulk or Supergirl to hang on your wall. Design and create your own comic book or comic strip. We will even create a rudimentary animation. The Backroom Bongo and Rubber-Band Band: Elementary Have fun being part of the art yourself while you perform. Whether you are musical or not, there is a special role for you. Participate in our kazoo orchestra, the Ghana African drum band, or Tap out rhythms of your own, that will add to a greater sound. Jack the Music Man will start and end every class with a tune on his ukulele to transition the campers into their musical journey. Make your own instrument from household materials, or use one of the various sound devises provided; you will have a ball making sounds. We ve got bongos, drums, cymbals, trashcans, rubber-bands, sticks brushes, maracas, tambourines, recorders and other simple sound devises for youngsters to enjoy and participate. In the end we will bang out some big drum sounds outdoors for the rocket group as they launch at the end of the week! Instructor: Jack Yarrows
Afternoon session: 12 noon-2:30 PM Making Model Rockets 2: 4 th grade - Middle If you missed the first session, don t miss this one. End your week with a bang! The group will be constructing model rockets to launch towards weeks end. Using ordinary household materials, each participant will cut, paint, mold, arm and launch their own model rocket. While waiting for our rockets to dry there will be a variety of models such as tanks, superhero s, cars, paper machete hot air balloons that the children can choose to paint and glue together to take home, because the rockets are a one way trip. All safety guidelines will be followed Mandalas, Patterns, and Illusions: Elementary Learn about the art of pattern making, fractals, designs, illusions, and mandalas!
