1 WALLA WALLA COMMUNITY COLLEGE Kids College 2017 School s out for summer but Kids College is in session! This summer only You will get to take as many classes as you are interested in. You will not have to pick just ONE class in each session because we have individual classes running all summer long! Pick one or ten!! It is up to you and your parent. You can register NOW if you see a class you like! We have over 25 classes to choose from, all with their own dates and times over the summer months. 2 Code Breakers Calling all future coders, programmers, & designers! Learn the basics of coding languages like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS through a series of web projects and design challenges each day and be on your way to becoming the next tech star! Whether you want to be the next Mark Zuckerberg or the high school student who just made $1 million dollars for programming in his bedroom, this course has the essentials you need to begin your journey. Projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years. AGES: 8-10 AGES: Date: 6/26 6/29 Date: 6/26 6/29 Minecraft Designers If you love the game Minecraft, and always wanted to design your own world, this class is for you! Learn how to create a custom map, the basics of creating 3D models using a new software to design your very own objects, how to build with Redstone and Command blocks, and create custom textures for you to import at home or share with friends. To access their project at home, students must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone, and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible. Parent address is required to use 3D modeling software. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. If you love playing video games, this is the camp for you! Make your first video game in this one-of-a-kind class that shows you the keys to designing your first 2D platformer game. Conceptualization, play experience, level design, graphics, sounds, and simple coding are just some of the concepts that we ll explore. No prior experience necessary, just a desire to have fun. Student created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers; Mac versions can be created after the program for $15.00 conversion fee. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. 3 Minecraft Modders Mon.-Thur. Use your favorite game to learn the basics of modding and foundations of programming. Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mods! Introductory coding will also be taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft. Student projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. To access their project at home students must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone, and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years. This class is for you and your parent to attend together! Fall in love with an evening of crafting pizzas from scratch. Go step-by-step through the process of baking a perfect pizza pie. Master how to make dough from scratch and shape a flawless crust. Learn the secrets of sauce making, tips on dressing your pizza for success, and what makes a perfect pizza cheese. Enjoy an incomparable pizza feast and leave with a box of pizza for later! Ages: 4-16 (Over 10 years old no parent required) Date: 8/7 Time: 6pm-8pm Room: 140 Cost: $45.00 App Attack! Mon.-Thur. Take the first steps into the world of mobile app design and customize your own game app! Using a specialized app and game development tool, students will explore the world of web-based (HTML5) mobile apps. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and game development, you will also see firsthand how the world of app publishing functions. Student-created apps will

4 I Know the Muffin Man Max Students: 12 I Know the Muffin Man Tues. This hands-on baking class is all about quick breads, muffins and scones; year round favorites that taste especially good! Students and parents will learn to make their own breakfast pastries that are ready for the oven within minutes. These can be frozen to be served anytime. We will make customized buttermilk biscuits, sour cream coffee cake, fruit muffins, quick breads, and of course, scones. Both sweet and savory pastries will be covered in this two-hour baking class. Ages: 4-16 (Over 10 years old no parent required) Date: 8/8 Time: 6pm-8pm Room: 140 Cost: $45.00 CSI Walla Walla Mon.-Fri. Students learn about the roles of a police officer. Learn how to investigate a collision and even lift fingerprints! Meet the K-9 dog and negotiate a hostage situation. Spend time with live demonstrations and understand the exciting job of CSI investigative detectives! Ages: 9-13 Date: 6/19 6/23 Time: 1pm-2:30pm Room: 106 Cost: $35.00 Earth Primer for Kids Max Students: 12 per session Mon. & Wed. This primer will focus on four areas of how we can impact sustainability in our lives - water, waste, energy, and healthier living options. Two hour blocks on each subject will combine instruction and fun, interactive, hands-on activities designed for kids. Kids will learn about the challenges facing planet Earth, conservation practices, and what actions they can take at home and school to reduce our carbon footprint and conserve resources for the future. Ages: 8-12 Date: 6/26 and 6/28 Time: 12pm-3pm Room: Water Center Cost: $25.00 Max Students: 12 Making Stop Motion Movies Mon. & Wed. Clay and Cameras - an Adventure in Stop Motion Photography. If you are familiar with stop motion, you know that it involves making movies of objects by taking numerous pictures of the objects as they are barely moved to simulate action. It s basically the old Gumby and Pokey shows that your parents used to watch as kids. Students must have a smartphone or tablet with camera that they will use to make stop motion projects. 5 Max Students: 24 Creating Comics in 2D & 3D You are full of characters and stories--i can tell! Here s your chance to create a 3D model and comic strip of a character and story of your own invention. Learn and expand drawing techniques used in the creation of comics and animation! Date: 7/10-7/13 Room: 1107 Ages: 9-13 Time: 3pm-5:30pm Cost: $45.00 (plus $10 supply fee) Yoga for Kids Ever wonder what yoga is all about? It s so much more than crazy shapes! If you re into sports, yoga is for you. If you re looking to get stretchy, yoga is for you. And most importantly, if you want to build some great tools for letting go of stress and finding your happy place, then yoga is for you! Learn to breathe and move in ways that will make your mind and body both feel amazing. Join us for a week-long adventure in developing strength, flexibility, and the best version of you through yoga! Please wear either yoga pants or leggings clothing that can move easily with your body. Personal mats are encouraged, as we will be barefoot, yogi-style! Long hair should be put back away from the face. Create a unique one-of-a-kind string art masterpiece to hang on the wall. Learn how to craft jewelry using wire and beads! Marble your very own mug using just nail polish and water! Spruce up keys with custom bows made out of felt and more! Date: 8/7 8/10 Room: 116 Ages: 9-12 Time: 9am-11:30am Cost: $45.00 (plus $10 supply fee) Mad Scientists Have you ever wondered what makes bath bombs fizz or how crystals form? Well this is the class for you! Spend the week using household items to create works of scientific amazement. Learn how to construct an edible water bottle as well as magnetic slime. Even take home a bouncy ball made by YOU! Explode a lemon, learn about surface tension, and even grow a geode. (D)ive into the world of being a mad scientist! No materials needed from home. 6 Babysitting Basics Saturday This class will teach young teens everything they need to know to be safe when they are home alone, watching younger siblings, or babysitting. Students will learn life-saving skills such as how to rescue someone who is choking, helpful information on what to do if there is severe weather, and how to perform CPR using mannequins. Class will include fun games, some role-playing exercises, babysitting as a business, safety for the sitter and much more. Your mom and dad will feel better knowing you re prepared to handle whatever situation comes up, and you ll be ready to be in charge! Students must bring sack lunch. Ages: Date: 7/15 Time: 9:30am-4:00pm Room: 1836 Cost: $45.00 Intro to Archery Mon.-Fri. This class is for new archers that wish to discover the thrill of shooting a bow. Students will learn the basics of shooting a bow as well as the required safety practices and techniques. Archery is a great way to be with friends and learn a new sport that s as old as history itself and changing every day. Class will be held outside. Ages: 9-14 Date: 6/19-6/23 Time: 3:30pm-5:30pm Room: Meet in front of the Dome Cost: $45.00 Max Students: 12 Basic Robotics Learn how to make your own light controller or even change colors of a light. Ever wonder what the temperature of a room is or the outdoors? How about the fridge or freezer? Learn how to program an LCD screen to do just that. Want to learn the basic controls that move and operate motor and servos to be able to control a remote controlled car or better yet to move a robot? You can even learn how to make an alarm for your room. These are just a few of the things we will cover in class. Come and explore your individual potential. A performance will be held on amp (Advanced Math Placement) Max Students: 20 Want to AMP up your math skills? Save time and money toward graduation by gaining skills needed to test into college-level math courses. amp (Advanced Math Placement) is a 2-week noncredit math course. It is geared toward freshmen who have been admitted for the fall 2017 quarter of college who either placed in pre-college level math or are getting ready to take the test and need a refresher. All materials, computer access, and membership to the online math program (ALEKS) are included (Wa-Hi class of 2017 graduates are eligible for a scholarship to cover class cost in full). 8 Refund Policy Full refunds are given for cancelled classes. Student requested refunds may be granted. 100% Refund 3 business days before class starts. The day that class begins does not count as one of the 3 business days. For example, to receive a full refund for a class that begins on Friday, the student needs to contact the Extended Learning Department by Tuesday. 40% Refund Less than 3 business days before class starts. No refund given the day of or after class has started. All student requested refunds must be made by the student themselves (or in the case of Kids College, by their parent) either by telephone, , in person, or by .
