2 SHORTS & SPORTS State College Area School District Community Education offers half and full day camps for youth in Grades 1-6 (Fall 2016) at Park Forest Elementary School. You choose two educational short term enrichment courses for morning activities and are divided into age-appropriate groups for afternoon activities that include recreational sports and swimming. TIMES: Half Day - 9:00 AM - 12:05 PM - Educational Shorts. Drop off is from 8:45 AM - 8:55 AM. Full Day - 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM - Shorts & Sports: Includes educational shorts in the morning and recreational activities in the afternoon. Drop off is from 7:30 AM - 8:55 AM. Classes begin promptly at 9:00 AM. LOCATION: Park Forest Elementary School FEE: $100 - Half Day - Educational Shorts per week (*$80 Week 3) $190 - Full Day - Shorts & Sports per week (*$165 Week 3) NOTES: Parents provide transportation. ~ Full Day students need to pack a lunch, afternoon snack, and drinks (all products must be nut-free). ~ Youth will swim twice a week at Park Forest pool. ~ There is limited enrollment in each course; registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. ADDITIONAL SUMMER OFFERINGS CAMP INVENTION - EPIC Brainstorm product ideas and build original prototypes using real tools and components found in everyday devices. Explore giant insects, colorful animals and their environments. Construct and personalize a DIY solar-powered cricket and discover the science of slime, sound, and coding! This is going to be EPIC! Create unusual art that glows in the dark and use special tools and brushes that reflect these creature's unusual features. CLAY CREATIONS Use your imagination to create with clay. Sculpt using your fingers, hands, and simple tools. Learn artistic techniques and methods like pinch, coil, and slab building. Build pots, critters, and abstract masterpieces! CREATIVE COOKING Master pizza making, create sinful sweets, and more! Learn how to cook scrumptious meals for your family and friends. Separate food fact from food fiction in this new offering! DISCOVERING CENTRAL AMERICA Explore the Central American paradise! Learn useful Spanish phrases and act out everyday interactions with one another. Learn how to order food at restaurants, get to know the beautiful rain forest and its wild life, and create some colorful art. EDIBLE SCIENCE Whet your appetite in this course full of yummy science activities. Discover how the sciences play a role in experiments done with some of your favorite foods! ENGINEERING ADVENTURES Engineer some fun as you build and test simple machines such as levers, pulleys, springs, and wheels while working through interactive experiments, games, and exploration. Discuss how these simple machines fit into our daily lives and create an understanding of how things work. FITNESS WITH FRIENDS Energize! Get healthy while having fun learning the four areas of fitness: Aerobic Capacity (Heart Rate), Muscular Endurance, Flexibility, and Nutrition! Play traditional recess games, enjoy delicious and healthy snacks, and take part in team-building exercises. Be ready to get active! GALAXY EXPLORERS This popular camp is now part of the Shorts & Sports lineup! Learn about principles of space science, earth science, and more. Build an international space station and conduct all sorts of experiments that are 'out of this world'. GET CULTURED Enjoy crafts and activities from around the world! Make Chinese lanterns and African masks, learn how to write your name in Japanese, learn how to play cricket like our friends in England, and much more! Students will create their own cookbook as they prepare, cook, and assemble recipes inspired by storybook favorites such as Dragons Love Tacos and If You Give A Cat A Cupcake. Crafts, group games, and activities will round out this exciting new offering. INTO THE WOODS Discover woodland creatures-real and imagined. Create a home for toads or fairies using clay and materials from nature. MOSAIC ARTS Create multiple, multifaceted mosaics! Use paper, fabric, clay, and more to create a variety of 2D and 3D projects. NEON MADNESS Make your 2D and 3D projects glow! Create glow-in-the-dark jewelry; use special markers to create magnificent, glowing drawings; and turn ordinary artwork into extraordinary neon masterpieces. OOO, GOO, AND STICKY, TOO! 4 Back by popular demand! Project Based Tech Courses for Grades 4-6 Offered in cooperation with Black Rocket (+Courses carry an additional $55 fee per week) App ADVENTURES - THE NEXT LEVEL! Continue your quest to make the next viral app! Whether you want to move past the basic techniques learned in last year's App Attack or want to jump right in, we are ready for you! Students will choose from a selection of different web-based (HTML5) mobile apps and explore more in-depth programming concepts. Student-created apps will be accessible on a Black Rocket site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. No prior experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take the class. Make Your First Video Game! If you love playing video games, this is the camp for you! Make your first video game in this one-of-a-kind class that shows you the keys to designing your first 2D platformer game. Conceptualization, play experience, challenge levels, graphics, sounds, and simple coding are just some of the concepts that we ll explore. Student created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share Minecraft ANIMATORS Bring your favorite Minecraft characters to life in an animated short film! Learn how studios like Pixar and Disney make movies like Inside Out and Frozen by using techniques like keyframing, tweening, texturing, and animating rigged 3D models! Learn the basics of coding languages like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS through a series of web projects and design challenges each day and be on your way to becoming the next tech star! Whether you want to be the next Mark Zuckerberg or the high school student who just made $1 million dollars for programming in his bedroom, this course has the essentials you need to begin your journey. Projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share Make Your First 3d Video Game! Try this new version of a Black Rocket classic! This class allows you to develop a game concept that goes well beyond the limitations of the traditional 2D game design classes. Students will learn the physics behind 3D games, explore beginner event scripting, level design, controlling flow of gameplay, and story telling. Student created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share Minecraft Modders Use your favorite game to learn the basics of modding and foundations of programming. Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mod! Introductory coding will also be taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft. Student projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share Registration Information All registration and payment is ONLINE! Visit and click the Register Now button. NEW USERS If you are a new user, click Create New Account at the bottom of the screen and follow the on-screen prompts. (NOTE: Our registration system is separate from the District's Parent Portal.) REGISTERING All camps will be listed on the left hand side of the screen under Elementary Programs. Select the camp for which you would like to register. A Session Schedule will open. Eligible students will be listed in a drop down on the Session Schedule page. Select the student you would like to register. Click Add next to Full or Half day, as well as 9:00 and 10:35 classes. You will see the classes being added to your cart in the upper right hand corner. If you need to register additional children for this particular camp, select their name from the drop down at the top of the page and follow the same process to create their schedule. Once you have completed your selections, you may register for additional camps by clicking the desired camp in the left navigation bar. Review your selections and click Checkout to continue. WAITLIST New this year - Only Black Rocket classes will have a waitlist option. PAYMENT At the time of registration, a non-refundable deposit equal to 5% of your total invoice is required. At checkout, you will have the option of paying in FULL or placing your total bill on a Payment Plan +. If you choose to place your invoice on a payment plan, your credit card will be charged every Monday, starting May 16th and ending July 4th, for a total of 8 weekly payments. You will receive a confirmation upon successful registration. +You must click the box that says "Click here to put this invoice on a payment plan". If you do not do this prior to entering your credit card information, you will be charged the entire invoice amount. There will be a charge of 5% on any refund required should you inadvertently pay in full. CANCELLATIONS A cancellation form is required for all cancellation requests. You can find this form at No refunds are granted for cancellations made with less than five business days' notification prior to the start of a course (*Three weeks for Camp Invention). All cancellations are subject to a $20 cancellation fee per camp.
