1 Kids College Summer 2016 Kids College at Saint Francis University's is a summer camps program designed for school children in grades 1 through 10. These three-four day camps introduce children to several branches of science: astronomy, biology, chemistry, environmental engineering, physics, and more. In each camp, children become scientists who are critically observe the surrounding environment, pose scientific questions, conduct experiments, collect and analyze data, and draw their own conclusions. Each camp includes daily (weather permitting) outside activities: field trips, short hikes, games, and physical exercises. Registration Space is limited. Registrations are accepted until five business days the start date of the chosen camp. Complete the online registration form on our website: Print the confirmation and mail it with your payment. If you have coupons for any of the camps, please deduct their value from the payment and include the coupons in the envelop (restrictions: no more than one coupon per camp can be used). Please make the checks payable to Saint Francis University. We do not accept credit cards at this time. 2 Grades Adventures in Chemistry I Welcome to Adventures in Chemistry! During this three-day camp, students grades 1-3 will get the opportunity to explore the sciences through various small scale instructor supervised experiments. These experiments include making silly putty, discovering the harmful effects of oil spills, exploring static electricity and the Van de Graff generator, making our very own ice cream from liquid nitrogen, and many more exciting activities! Dates: Tuesday, June 21 - Thursday, June 23 For: Girls and Boys entering grades 1-3 in Fall 2016 Program Fee: $105 Registration Deadline: June Build It Better/Let's Learn Some Science During this week kids explore numerous types of introductory sciences including but not limited to anatomy, ecology, physics, and engineering. Children build miniature scale greenhouses to look at the effects of greenhouse gases. Campers get to experience how smell affects the taste of food. (Food allergies will be taken into consideration: no nuts or nut-based products will be used. It will be mainly fruits and vegetables.) Weather pending, children may collect macro invertebrates from a small stream on campus. For a day or two, kids work in the engineering field on several small projects known as build-it-better. It is a fun-filled, thought-provoking week to get boys and girls alike interested in the sciences. Dates: Monday, July 11 - Thursday, July 14 For: Girls and Boys entering grades 1-3 in Fall 2016 Registration Deadline: July 4 3. Science and Engineering for Kids This camp set out to show young ones the science that surrounds their daily life, leading girls and boys through lessons that they are reminded of everyday. During the camp kids begin to understand what it means to be an engineer, an astronaut, a biologist and more. Over the course of the camp, well thought-out projects, examples, games and lessons cover the science behind the phases of water, water quality, gravity, geology, solar energy, bridges, how soap works, plant life, bugs, cooking and much more! 3 Grades CSI: Loretto CSI and other television shows have made forensics a very popular word in the American vocabulary. In this camp, kids conduct experiments based on some forensics procedures to solve simulated crimes. Dates: Monday, June 20 - Thursday, June 23 Registration Deadline: June D Printing World I In this camp children learn how to use various computer programs to create 3D object. By the end of the camp, children will bring their creations to life using 3D printers. During our camp children will discover that the only limit to what can be printed is the limit of imagination. Dates: Monday, June 27 - Thursday, June 30 Registration Deadline: June Energy Camp Children enrolled in the energy camp will explore the many ways in which energy impacts their daily lives. Participants will learn how energy is used in transportation, heating, and in generating electricity. A focus will be given to sources of energy used in western Pennsylvania. Students will discuss energy's benefits as well as the effects that it can have on human health and the environment. Hands-on activities will include a solar heating experiment, experimentation with model wind turbines, an energy scavenger hunt and more. Students will come away with a better understanding of the amazing power or energy. Dates: Monday, July 11 - Thursday, July 14 Registration Deadline: July 4

4. Adventures in Chemistry II In this camp we will go over basic concepts in chemistry.

There will be a good bit of learning during this camp but there will be just as much fun and entertainment too.

STEM K NEX Camp During the hands-on STEM K NEX camp students in grades 4-6 will build K NEX catapults, K NEX bridges, K NEX wind powered cars, the tallest K NEX

We will also go over concepts like gas laws and rates of reactions. There will be a good bit of learning during this camp but there will be just as much fun and entertainment too. Dates: Monday, July 18 - Thursday, July 20 Program Fee: $105 Registration Deadline: July STEM K NEX Camp During the hands-on STEM K NEX camp students in grades 4-6 will build K NEX catapults, K NEX bridges, K NEX wind powered cars, the tallest K NEX tower that can hold the most amount of weight and finally a Rube Goldberg K NEX contraption. This camp gives the students hands experience and helps students to find out why things happen to get them interested in STEM and hopefully get them to explore STEM fields in their future. Dates: Monday, July 25 - Thursday, July 28 Registration Deadline: July 18

5 Grades Microscopes, Lakes and Trails In this camp we will investigate nature at both microscopic and macroscopic scales. On Day 1, students will learn about biological scales of organization and will become familiar with the use of the microscope by viewing common objects/organisms at microscopic scales. On Day 2, the students will investigate aquatic invertebrate community structure and food web relationships at Lake Saint Francis. Samples will be taken at the lake and analyzed in the lab using microscopes and other lab tools. Finally, on Day 3 the students will hike the Saint Francis Watershed Trail and learn about watersheds, ecological succession, and ecosystem function. Students will leave the camp with an understanding of how living organisms at all levels of biological organization interact, and will look at nature from a brand new perspective. Dates: Monday, June 20 - Thursday, June 22 Program Fee: $120 Registration Deadline: June Superheroes vs. Einstein How fast is the Flash? How strong is Superman? How can a villain who controls magnetism defeat the X-men? This new four-day course explains the real science behind the super powers of your favorite comic heroes using basic math and science principles/experiments. Dates: Monday, June 27 - Thursday, June 30 Registration Deadline: June Space Camp In this camp, students learn constellations, stars and the nature of light. The campers progress from discovering why we see rainbows, a blue sky, and green grass to figuring out the chemical composition of distant stars. Among the activities offered in this camp, students conduct experiments to investigate fundamental properties of light, conduct solar observations of the sun, compare the sun to other stars, and discuss solar activity and its effect on our everyday life on Earth. This camp is designed to introduce children to a wide range of concepts and laws in astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, and Earth sciences. In the camp students learn about the quality of water, the common and innovative processes water goes through, the natural and geographical behavior of water. Students take field trips to learn of local water systems and treatment. These young scientists can potentially understand what their future careers could hold through this camp with introductions to the fields of environmental engineering, chemistry, physics and microbiology. Dates: Monday, July 18 - Thursday, July 21 Registration Deadline: July D Printing World II In this camp students will gain experience in modeling 3D objects using Tinkercad, Autodesk 123D, Sculptris, and Meshmixer computer software.
