1 Las Cruces students talk to astronaut aboard International Space Station LAS CRUCES - The best way to learn about space is to go there. The next best way to learn is to talk to someone in space. And that's what nearly 200 students did Tuesday at Las Cruces City Hall. The out-of-this-world experience came courtesy of the Las Cruces Museum of Nature & Science, which was also host to a Science of Space Fair that attracted 800 children, grades kindergarten to eighth-grade, to the lobby of city hall. The 20-minute live chat with Ricky Arnold, a United States educator and scientist took place in the City Council Chambers. Students in a museum space camp, students in Las Cruces Public Schools K3-plus programs and the general public lined up to ask Arnold questions, such as what he eats in space and how he washes his hair in zero gravity. The people I ve been able to work with at NASA is the biggest reward of my career, Arnold said to the 176 students at the live chat, also known as a NASA downlink. Being in space and being able to float around and look at Earth is just such a huge reward. Arnold told the students that the astronauts aboard the ISS are always researching and conducting experiments to find out if life can survive in space. I ve been busy growing plants from flowering plants to simple algae on how they grow and reproduce in space, Arnold said. We look at the DNA Page 1 of 5
2 which tells cells what to do and have been able to isolate that material and decode it to find out what other critters grow out here. These are the closest things to pets we have up here. By doing so, we find out what s up here with us. In the city hall lobby, children got to participate in space-related activities from New Mexico State University STEM Outreach and Department of Astronomy, Virgin Galactic, Spaceport America, a model rocketry club, Challenger Learning Center, NASA and area museums. More: Challenger Learning Center: Take simulated trip to space during festival Acting Space Communications and Network Services Deputy Space Network Manager Erik Winter said he believed the students asked intelligent questions during the NASA In-flight Education Downlink. 3 Sophia Hill, 10, a student at Central Elementary, reading from a note card, asks astronaut Ricky Arnold what it feels like in microgravity, during a NASA Downlink presentation at Las Cruces City Hall, Tuesday July 31, (Photo: Josh Bachman/Sun-News) Many of them about the more interesting aspects of life in space and some very technical questions, Winter said. That surprised me. Winter said he thought the experience was a great opportunity for Las Cruces students to learn more about space exploration and how Las Cruces works closely with NASA. I think it was a great opportunity for the kids in the Las Cruces Public School system to get to interact with the astronauts on board the ISS, Winter said. This is one of 16 events like this going on this year. We support all of those at the NASA White Sands Complex in Las Cruces. It was just an added benefit to get one here in our hometown. Winter said events like these are beneficial because they generate interest to pursue careers in the STEM field. More: Verizon brings STEM 'Minority Males' summer camp to NMSU Generating interest in STEM greatly benefits the NASA mission here in town, Winter said. Most of our employee base (at the NASA-White Sands Test Facility) comes from Las Cruces and graduates from NMSU. So, the more interest we can generate in young kids the more local talent we can apply to this and ensure the success of Las Cruces and the NASA mission. Page 3 of 5

(Photo: Josh Bachman/Sun-News) Following the downlink, more presentations from NASA WSTF highlighted the Las Cruces connection to research projects on the ISS. Deputy Station Director Dan Hein discussed the history of the space network and tracking and data relay satellite and NASA IT Security Administrator and Solar System Ambassador Richard Pacheco closed the event with a summary of the ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS) project. The Museum of Nature & Science will host one more Science of Space Expo this summer Saturday, Aug. 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the museum, 411 N. Main St. stronaut-aboard-international-space-station-ricky-arnold/ / Page 4 of 5
5 The museum will feature astronomy activities from the GSK Science in the Summer program provided by GlaxoSmithKline. The free event will introduce visitors to the sun and the stars, Earth s moon and space travel. Admission to the Las Cruces museum is free.
