1 1 HSAP Currents DCSD Home School Assistance Program Spring 2015 Volume 9 Issue 2 Cinnamon Ridge Farms On Wednesday, May 13th, the HSAP group will take a field trip to Cinnamon Ridge Farms. The tour will take an hour and will include a trip to the dairy barn where we will learn and see where our milk comes from and watch it go from the cow to the store. This includes a tour of the robotic dairy to see robots milking cows. We will also see where they make their cheese. ( Drive to Donahue, go north 1 mile and turn left-look for a big blue barn.) We will meet at Farm and Fleet in the NW corner of the parking lot for anyone who wants to caravan to the Farm. If you wish to carpool, talk to others who are also going. We will leave Farm & Fleet at 10:30 so that we will get to the Farm before 11 a.m. when the tour will begin. They do have a picnic area, so if you wish to bring a picnic lunch, you may do so. Please sign up by May 6th. Students and preschoolers are free. Adults are $ Archery Archery will be offered on Thursday, April 23rd from 1-3 p.m. at the Heartshot Ministry ( Adventure Church) at 6509 NW Blvd. in Davenport. The archery outpost building is behind the church. Jeff and Kathy Schulz (one of our HSAP families) will put on a demonstration and give instructions for archery. Students will learn how to shoot a bow and practice. PLEASE be there at 12:45 p.m., so parents can sign a release waiver. Parents are also welcome to shoot. It is free and bows are provided. Sign up by Thursday, April 16.

2 2 Butterflies-Avian Biology On April 15th from 9-11 a.m. and April 29th from 9:30-11:00 a.m., Brian Blevins and Jennifer Lanphere will be presenting an art and biology lesson. Brian Blevins is an entomologist (study of insects) and a lepidopterist (study of butterflies and moths). He is very passionate about wildlife and the birds and butterflies in our area. He is the owner of the Pete Petersen Bird Shop in the East Village. He will tell us about the habitats, migration, lifespan and common butterflies that are in our area. Jennifer will then instruct us on how to paint a watercolor about butterflies. There is no cost. The classes will be held at Lincoln. Please sign up by April 10th for both classes. AEA Book Giveaway On Thursday, May 14th, from 7:30-5:00, the AEA will have its annual book giveaway. The AEA is located at st Street in Bettendorf. The giveaway will be in the library, and all HSAP teachers (parents) are welcome. Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency As a teacher, you may check out materials from the AEA. They have an updated list of Davenport HSAP parents. You may go over there (729 21st Street, Bettendorf) or contact Cheryl Porter, media staff, at

3 3 Davenport Public Works Many of you remember the great tour that we took at the Public Works last October. On Saturday, May 16th, the Showcase of Learning and Applied Science will take place. The Public Works will be open from 9 a.m. to 2p.m. Student exhibits will be on display from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. STEM activities related to Public Works services will be available throughout the event. The event is open to the public. The Public Works facility is located at 1200 E. 46th Street. This is not an HSAP event, but we thought you would like to know of the opportunity. Android Exhibit at the Putnam HSAP will be attending the Android Exhibit at the Putnam on Tuesday, May 19th at 1:30 p.m. The exhibit is self-guiding and has 9 major areas. 1. Are We Alone? This tells us how Science Fiction has inspired science. 2. Looking for Life in Space This deals with exo-planets and the possibility of life on other planets. 3. Alien Life on Earth-Scientists have found species on Earth that live in extreme conditions. 4. Artificial Intelligence and Robots-We learn the difference between robots (machines) and androids (robots with humanlike qualities and appearance.) 5. Robot Space Explorers such as the Mars Rover. 6. Explore the Solar System tells us of all the new data we have on the Solar System. 7. The Robotization of the Planet Earth deals with our use of robots in everyday life. 8. I-Cyborg tells us about robotic suits as seen in Iron Man and body parts that are now robotic. 9. Microbiome deals with the human body. Field notes and an activity sheet will be given to participants. This exhibit includes a 7 minute video. Students and preschoolers are free. Adults are $ Please sign up by May 12th.

4 4 Putnam Summer Camps Putnam summer camp programs are available for youth entering grades K-8. Multiple child and member discounts are available as well as scholarship opportunities. Weeklong, full-day camps are scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The following camps will be offered: Harry Potter for grades 2-5, June 8-12 Rube Goldberg Design Academy, grades 3-6, June Camp C3(code, create, and craft), grades 3-6, July 6-10 Patent Pending, grades 3-6, July Don t Try This at Home, grades 3-6, August 3-7 Fee is $160 or $150 for museum members Weeklong, half-day camps for grades K-2 are also available. Fee is $85 or $76.50 for members. Other camps include the Engineering Kids Camp in July. Contact the Putnam Museum at (563) for more information. Home School Lego Program Our homeschool parents, Jared and Beth Johnson, will have the last Lego program for the year at the Fairmount Branch Library. The group will meet Thursday, April 23rd from 6-7:30. There is no cost and they are recommending that the students be ages 8-12 years old. They are planning on having a theme and then have the students build items concerning that theme. There will be no summer program, but there are plans to continue in the fall. Legos will be provided. Many times we have others who would like to attend, but we thought we had reached our maximum number. Susie, John and Donna have been busily working on the library at Lincoln. If you have any need for books, workbooks, or manipulatives, please check at the library to see if we have something you can use.
