2018 Summer Adventure Camps Not your ordinary summer camp! At the Randall Davey Audubon Center & Sanctuary campers explore 135 acres of mountain wilderness and a variety of diverse habitats. We discover, investigate, and play through hands-on, minds-on activities and games that encourage a understanding, appreciation, and love of nature. Our daughter loved going to the Audubon Camp, she learned all about birds, insects, plants and animals as well as how to be a good steward. The staff were great, well organized, super professional, and engaged the kids with thoughtful, well-designed activities Camp Parent 1800 Upper Canyon Road, Santa Fe, NM Call us at

2018 Program Schedule Camp sessions run Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Drop-off between 8:30 and 9:00 am. Pick-up between 3:00 and 3:30 pm. Each week we focus on a different nature and science topic to explore through activities, games, discovery, and art. In the mornings we take advantage of our sanctuary trails and the nearby Santa Fe Canyon Preserve to learn about and enjoy nature. We hike, play games, and even build forts a favorite camp activity! After lunch we read stories, play more games, and work on arts and crafts. Explore our program schedule and read on for program descriptions! 3 2018 Program Descriptions Chickadees Programs for ages 5 to 7 Animal Habitats - June 4th - 8th What do all animals need in order to survive and thrive in the wild? This week we ll learn about the elements of a habitat by exploring the Randall Davey Audubon sanctuary. Through scavenger hunts, obstacle courses, shelter building challenges, outdoor games, and art projects campers will discover why habitat is necessary for animals and why our nature center is such a special place for them. Fur, Feathers, Skin & Scales- June 18th - 22nd A perfect camp for animal loving kids! This camp is all about discovering the different groups of animals and the unique features that set them apart from each other. Each day of camp we will explore a different group of animals through hands-on investigations, story-telling, creative play, and craft projects. Campers will imagine their own creative creatures and bring them to life through art! All About Bugs - July 2nd - 6th (no camp July 4th) Insects are cool! Summer time is perfect for going on a bug hunt and learning about fascinating insects like butterflies, bees, ants, and beetles. We ll break out the butterfly nets, bug jars, and magnifiers to take a close-up look at these little animal friends in a safe and humane way. Campers will learn about insect pollinators, build a bug, compete in caterpillar races, and more! Nature Sprouts- July 23rd - 27th Our wildlife garden and sanctuary trails are the perfect place for the budding botanist to learn about plants from what a plant needs to grow to why plants are important for people and animals. Nature Sprouts participants can expect a ton of plant fun this week. Activities will include games, hands-on gardening, print-making from plants, flower dissection, and scavenger hunts. 3

Artful Aviary - June 11th - 15th 2018 Program Descriptions Towhees Programs for ages 7 to 10 Science and art combine this week at camp, as each day out on our trail we ll explore the fascinating and sometimes strange adaptations of birds through games and activities. The outrageous plumes of peacocks, the musical wings of the Club-winged Manakin, and the colorful bill of the Toucan are examples of bird adaptations that will inspire campers to turn our classroom into an aviary of art in the afternoonspaintings, sculpture, drawings, and crafts will be influenced by birds. Super Plants - July 9th - 13th The Super Plants camp week brims with hands-on experiments, outdoor activities and games for campers to delve into the science of the super power of plants: Photosynthesis! We ll get delightfully dirty as we experiment with mud and soil. We ll harness the energy of the sun in art and design projects. We ll cool off as we experiment with the properties of water. We ll get green thumbs in our wildlife garden with Master Gardeners! Oh, and of course we ll play in the forest and build forts too! Nature Detectives - July 30th - August 3rd Mysteries abound at the Audubon Center this week and only a trained Nature Detective can put the pieces of the puzzle together. A Nature s Detective s mission, should they choose to accept it, is to collect daily clues and evidence from the sanctuary to solve mysteries of the forest. Each day, in addition to games, arts & crafts, and outdoor play, campers will have a fresh mystery to solve. I have been along on many school trips and camp experiences with my children and grandchildren, but rarely have I seen teachers/counselors with such joyful enthusiasm and energy, depth of experience with their subject, and skill in helping children learn with delight and engagement Summer Camp Grandparent 4

2018 Program Descriptions The Art and Design of Adaptation June 25th - 29th Do you ever wonder how things work? Do you like to build things, or take things apart to discover their parts? This week at camp we ll be taking a close look at how nature solves problems through adaptation, and how people can solve problems by mimicking nature. We ll put our design and engineering capabilities to the test in a series of fun challenges. Can you build a stable tower as high as a giraffe s neck (7 feet!)? How long can you keep a paper airplane in the air (Turkey Vultures can soar without flapping their wings for up to six hours!)? Peregrines Programs for ages 9 to 12 Ecology, Grossology - July 16th - 20th Scat. Mold. Blood. Fungus. Gas. Scabs. Slime. Mucus... Gross-tastic! This week we explore some of the grossest aspects of nature. We ll investigate the connection between grossology the study of all things gross- and ecology the study of living things and their environment. What s the point of farts and burps? Why are snails slimy? Why don t plants bleed when we cut them? We ll answer these questions and more in a series of investigations, experiments, and craft projects. When I was younger, I was a camper at the Audubon Center, and I looked forward to it every summer. It was incredible to be a counselor at the camp I love so much. The Randall Davey Audubon Center is a wonderful place. I m so thankful that I got to work at such a fun, interesting camp with such kind staff Junior Naturalist-in-Training 5

Naturalists-in-Training Volunteer Program for Ages Audubon s Youth Volunteer Program Teens between 13 and 18 years old can volunteer with our education team and help inspire and have fun exploring with campers! Senior Naturalists-in-Training (SNs, 15 years +), and Junior Naturalists -in Training (JNs, 13-14) assist our educators and interns in a variety of daily activities related to our camp theme each week. From storytelling, craft time, hiking excursions, games, science experiments and more, volunteers gain skills and experience, all while having fun and learning in nature. We are seeking volunteers that can model excellent safety and behavior standards for our campers. Volunteers must be in good standing at school, responsible, open to learning new skills, willing to work with a team, and above all, you should enjoy sharing your love of nature with our young adventurers! We ask that all our youth volunteers commit to two days of training prior to camp, and then commit to volunteering for at least 2 weeks of the 9 weeks of camp.
