2 SWC Session Descriptions 2018 Week 1: June #1 and 2: : Superheroes Week Come join the fun and grow your talents as a writer. National Writing Project Teacher Consultant,, will help you, as a beginning writer, develop your half day. This week s theme is superheroes with a focus on making comics! Students will work to create their own comic books. You will visit many sites on campus that will help cultivate creative ideas for your writing. These sessions are ½ day camps. #3: senses. This dynamic camp is for 3-5 grade students who love to write! TC s: Annette Kelly and Katie Muhlenkamp #4: Wizarding World of Writing Witches and wizards, embrace your creative minds and join us for a Wizarding World of Writing. If you dream about attending Hogwarts or having your own creative magical adventure, or if like writing plays, fan-fiction, sci-fi, or poetry inspired by the lifestyle of wizards and witches, join us for a fantastical fantasy writing experience. Students will be provided opportunities to explore the magic in the world around them and extend their imagination. Opportunities for creation in writing and exploring various genres, as well as writing techniques, and inspiration from the beautiful Michigan State University campus are a part of this wizarding adventure. TC s: Dawn Reed and #5: Kids for Causes Do you want to help change the world? This camp is for you! Campers will take on a cause that they are passionate about and write persuasively to elicit change. Ultimately, they will create blogs with Kid Blog to post their work, so they can communicate with the outside world and have real audiences. You will be taught by a National Writing Project Teacher Consultant: Mike Foster. This session is full day, so you should bring snacks and a lunch as well as appropriate footwear for walking around campus. #6: Creative Writing Do you love to write? In this camp, you will travel to various locations on the campus of MSU, find ideas and inspiration through multiple mediums, consider different genres, and share your thinking through writing. Participants in this camp will be able to use their creativity to guide their work for the week, while being encouraged to consider different points of view and the way in which they would like to share their writing. Campers will work with Mrs. Kristin Graham, a National Writing Project Teacher Consultant. This session is full day, so you should bring snacks and a lunch as well as appropriate footwear for walking around campus.

3 June 25-28, 2018 #7 & 8: : Royalty Week Come join the fun and grow your talents as a writer. National Writing Project Teacher Consultant,, will help you, as a beginning writer, develop your half day. This week s theme is royalty, a perfect fit for all of those prince and princesses! We will focus on journaling during this week.you will visit many sites on campus that will help cultivate creative ideas for your writing. These sessions are ½ day camps. #9: : senses. This dynamic camp is for 3-5 grade students who love to write! Taught by TC Annette Kelly #10: Creative Non-fiction This camp is for writers who love to write creatively and imaginatively about real life. We'll start our week by choosing true topics to explore and research - real people and real events in real settings. After we dive into the topics we are passionate about, we will decide on creative ways to write about those topics and teach others about what we've learned. Students will learn about the research process and will explore a variety of writing genres during the week. Taught by Rachel Kenney and Kathryn Morcom 9-12 #11: senses. This dynamic camp is for 3-5 grade students who love to write! Taught by TC Annette Kelly #12: Geeking Out Science Fiction and Fantasy Writing: Robots?! Time travel?! Wizards?! Oh, my! Whether you dream of coming up with the next Hunger Games, the next Star Wars, or the next Harry Potter, you will find your inspiration in this camp. We'll experiment with more far-fetched and fantastical character, plot, and setting development as we draw our inspiration from each other and from Sci-Fi and Fantasy texts. Students will be taught techniques to enhance their writing including incorporation of showing, not telling, world building, and other techniques. Students will also have a chance to develop writing pieces of their choice during various writing experiences incorporated in the camp. Taught by Rachel Kenney #13: The Art of Writing Campers will explore the art of storytelling through photography by learning various photography techniques, taking pictures around campus, and creating stories based on those images. Taught by TC

4 #14: Warriors of Writing We will visit several sights around campus and explore how they relate to a Spartan s shield, sword, helmet, and heart through writing poetry. Join us for this fun, creative adventure and be a Spartan Warrior of Writing! Taught by TC s Aram Kabodian and Jes Matthews : : Dr. Seuss Week AM ONLY grades Come join the fun and grow your talents as a writer. National Writing Project Teacher Consultant,, will help you, as a beginning writer, develop your half day. This week s theme is Dr. Seuss with a focus on poetry and silly stories. You will visit many sites on campus that will help cultivate creative ideas for your writing. These sessions are ½ day camps. 16: with EETCHY Campers will develop a love for writing with EETCHY the caterpillar. EETCHY will join us on adventures throughout campus as campers grow as writers. Taught by TC #17: Adventures in Writing Campers will create a magazine that follows their exploration of the people and places around MSU s campus throughout the week. Taught by TC #18: Photo Essays PM Give students an opportunity to explore an unfamiliar genre with this camp! National Writing Project Teacher Consultant,, will be the guide to this new and intriguing genre. Students will be taking daily field trips around campus to take pictures of different things that inspire stories! Students will be using digital cameras to capture moments and objects that will then be taken back to the classroom to inspire creative writing! Students will be eating a snack during this half day camp. Let the fun begin as students become immersed in this fun and engaging genre of writing! #19: Zines Zines (short for "magazine" or "fanzine") are hand-made DIY publications. As a genre, they encompass elements of collage, comics, pictures, text, and more, and are often made to promote self-expression and community. In this Spartan Writing Camp session, students will learn how to identify and make zines on things they are passionate about. Because zines come in a variety of forms and styles, students are invited to draw on their existing interests and talents--such as comic illustration, drawing, writing, and crafting--to complete their projects. Taught by TC Kate Firestone #20: Historical Fiction Calling all history buffs and creative writers! Taught by TC Aram Kabodian Thanks to a grant from The Arts Council of Greater Lansing s Creatives Program, a limited number of scholarships are available for families that qualify for free or reduced lunch.
