ITINERARY Monday 19 th and 26 th of September (this is a guide only and is subject to change) Arduino / Physical Computing: This session introduces interested people to the exciting world of the open source hardware platform known as Arduino. This is a tiny micro-controller that we can code and connect to the real world via electronics sensors and components. We'll cover the basics of the Arduino and how to use it, then we can work on a number of projects that will require us to construct a circuit and write some code for it. These projects will be appropriate to each user s skill level, they will range from a flashing light to RFID components. We have a number of internet connected devices that we can also use to make our own 'internet of things' devices. Art and Craft: Children aged4-6 will be weaving with colourful paper to make a placemat. The border will be decorated using felt pens. They will then find the letters in their name and glue them onto the placemat. Each master piece will be covered with clear contact for protection. If time permits, we will then each make and decorate a crown using a paper plate! * Our studio will be dedicated to these activities during this time, as such the gentle play display will be covered and not in use. 11:55am 2:55pm LEGO activities: Learn the different types of bridge designs and construct your own. It can be something complex like a suspension or cable stayed bridge or a simple beam bridge. Your goal will be to get your bridge 'certified', this will require your bridge to support the 1.5kg weights that we will strategically place on it. Can you become a certified bridge builder? To become certified you'll need to understand the weak parts of your bridge and ensure they are well supported. We'll provide some information on how forces are distributed and some inspirational images to help get your design started. We will be spending time bridge building and time will be allocated to the 'gentle play display' as well as LEGO set building and/or creative LEGO build. 3pm 6pm Coding: spend the afternoon working with Scratch 2.0. Beginners and advanced coders can all work on individual projects with the support of each other and Building Block Studio. We have 8 places that can use our computers, but we want to have a great collaborative experience so we can provide power and desk space for others who wish to bring their own laptops. We will work on games, stories and other programs and share them with other participants. You'll be sure to learn new things about Scratch and broaden your skills. * Our studio will be dedicated to Scratch coding during this time, as such the gentle play display will be covered and not in use.
Tuesday 20 th and 27 th of September (this is a guide only and is subject to change) LEGO activities: This session will begin with our LEGO mosaics! We will attempt to copy from an image to complete a LEGO styled mosaic puzzle. However, if we get stuck don t worry, the answer card is nearby. Then, we will each design and create a 3D LEGO Maze: using our imagination and critical thinking skills. We ll be designing mazes with dead ends, secret passages, traps and obstacles. Once finished, all mazes will be swapped with the other maze designers to attempt to complete each maze! After this activity is completed time will be allocated to the 'gentle play display' as well as LEGO set building and/or creative LEGO build. 11:55am 2:55pm Minecraft Engineering: Come together to help us build a shared Minecraft world in this Minecraft engineering session. You'll need to work as a team and co-operate with other participants to build a great city. We'll setup a shared server that all members can access. We have 6 PC's with Minecraft accounts, but we have space / power / networking for you to bring your own PC and Minecraft account. We'll build city components that use Redstone and command blocks. We'll need you to find resources that we can use to craft into other objects that we need for our city to survive. We are looking to make this a learning environment, if you already know all the secrets of Minecraft, you'll make a great leader, however if your new to Minecraft come along and learn about all the great things that can be built with this platform. * Our studio will be dedicated to Minecraft Engineering during this time, as such the gentle play display will be covered and not in use. 3pm 6pm 3pm 6pm Robotics: Start by assembling your own mbot, you'll need to follow the instructions and screw together the motors, sensors and circuit board. Once completed we'll use a special version of Scratch to write some code for this great little bot. We'll learn to make it move and turn, then we'll add the sensors to enable it to find obstacles and follow lines. We'll setup our bots to play a game of soccer. No experience with Scratch is needed, if you already know Scratch that will be great, you'll learn how Scratch and coding can control real world objects. Stop Motion Video: As a small team we'll work together to make a great LEGO stop motion movie. We'll need a script, some props (LEGO models) and some direction on what to make. We'll provide full access to the gentle play display for filming. Our movie might need special effects such as a green screen and perhaps some sound effects. Don't worry the software that we use to bring it all together can help us with this, we can show you how it works. * During this time our studio will be dedicated to these activities, as such the gentle play display will be covered and not in use.

Wednesday 21 st and 28 th of September (this is a guide only and is subject to change) LEGO Technic: spend the morning completing a few small projects with LEGO Technic and power functions. Make things like a moving butterfly or a car and along the way learn about simple machines, such as: motors, gear ratio, torque, leverage, and how to construct strong corners. * Our studio will be dedicated to this activity during this time, as such the gentle play display will be covered and not in use. 11:55am 2:55pm 3D Design and Printing: Spend the afternoon learning about 3D design and 3D printing. We will start by designing a simple object with 123D Design and then print it up on our 3D printers. You'll learn the process of taking a model, slicing it up and printing it. While our objects are printing we will discuss topics like, dual extrusion, filament plastic types and design considerations. We will then use 123D Design to further understand and explore the tool, we'll design more objects such as a stamp and even a threaded nut (time permitting). No previous experience is needed, however students who have studied graphics at school will find the design easier. Basic computer skills are needed however. 11:55am 2:55pm Art and Craft:. First up we will each be designing and making a colourful criss-cross painting. Then we will use felt pens to make as face mask. Children will be required to cut their mask out using safety-scissors. This activity is for children ages 4-6 only. * Our studio will be dedicated to this these activities during this time, as such the gentle play display will be covered and not in use. 3pm 6pm LEGO activities: This session will focus on designing and building a large train track system on two tables pushed together. Every piece of track must be used! Once the track is completed, the group will then build 3 train stations and bridges over the tracks. They can then operate a train (possibly two trains) on their track! We will be spending time bridge building and time will be allocated to the 'gentle play display' as well as LEGO set building and creative LEGO build.
Thursday 22 nd and 29 th of September (this is a guide only and is subject to change) LEGO activities: First up each child will complete a LEGO mosaic puzzle. The remainder of the session will be focused on building skyscraper buildings out of LEGO. Each skyscraper will need to have at least 4 levels, with rooms, furniture, windows, doorways and stairs! How tall will your skyscraper be?. After these activities are completed time will be allocated to the 'gentle play display' as well as LEGO set building and/or creative LEGO build. * Our studio will be dedicated to this activity during this time, as such the gentle play display will be covered and not in use. 3pm 6pm Reserved
Friday 23 rd and 30 th of September (this is a guide only and is subject to change) App Coding:.23rd September: (mobile apps (ages 8+)) Use App Inventor to code an app that will run on a real Android phone. We'll use this visual programming tool to build out a number of apps that we can test and use on either your own Android phone or one of our shared phones in the Studio. We'll cover how to design the user interface, which will incorporate buttons, images, sounds and even sensors like the accelerometer. Then we'll write code that connects this user interface and makes the app work. No experience with Scratch is needed, if you already know Scratch that will be great, you'll be well placed to make some more advanced apps. App Coding 30 th September (HTML / JavaScript) ages 10+ Learn the basic building blocks of web design. We'll build out a small site that uses HTML, CSS and JavaScript. We'll cover the basic HTML tags that give the page structure. We'll use CSS to show how to change the appearance of the elements on screen. We'll show how to use JavaScript and a common tool called JQuery to add some interactive elements to our site. This workshop will require a fair bit of typing and basic computer skills. Art and Craft:. We will be making a stained glass window decoration which will be covered with clear contact for protection. Then we will then make something awesome by weaving with wool. * Our studio will be dedicated to this these activities during this time, as such the gentle play display will be covered and not in use. 11:55am 2:55pm LEGO activities: First up in this session each child will complete a LEGO mosaic puzzle. We will then focus on collaboratively constructing a LEGO city! Our junior town planners will first need to discuss what they want/need in their city then each child will contribute by making buildings, cars, parks, a hospital, etc. After these activities are completed time will be allocated to the 'gentle play display' as well as LEGO set building and/or creative LEGO build. 3pm 6pm Reserved
