1 SCUOLA DI ARCHITETTURA URBANISTICA INGEGNERIA DELLE COSTRUZIONI Milano, 8 th February 2018 Workshop Future Ways of Living 3 Toronto, April 29 th May 7 th 2018 An International Workshop in collaboration with George Brown College Toronto, Meet the Media Guru Milano, Milan Triennale Dear Students, In 2018, the Institute without Boundaries (IwB) and Centre for Arts, Design & Information Technology (CADIT) will host the third installment of Future Ways of Living in alignment with Toronto Digifest. This builds upon a series of work in collaboration with Meet the Media Guru, Politecnico di Milano and a number of private and public organizations in which GBC s Institute without Boundaries created a platform to imagine how peoples lives will be impacted by technologies over the next 10 years. With Future Ways of Living 1 & 2 taking place in Milan as part of major events such as the World Expo and the 21st Milan Triennale, the third event will take place in Toronto, at GBC s School of Design. Future Ways of Living 3 is an exciting opportunity to imagine the future of work and its impact on creative industries that align with the divisions and programs offered within GBC s CADIT. This will engage GBC students, faculty, industry and academic partners to develop concepts that demonstrate how digital tools, technologies and trends will transform the workplaces, creative ecosystems and the products, services and systems they output in the future. This event will encourage creative thinking, collaboration amongst CADIT divisions, provide insight to the workplaces and jobs of the future, as well as the educational training & skills required as we transition into the 4th industrial revolution. We look forward to the results of Future Ways of Living 3 and hope that the outputs foster a new dialogue within CADIT to prepare our staff, students, faculty and industry for the future At this workshop can take part 24 students of POLIMI and can apply all students enrolled at the School of Architecture Urban Planning Construction Engineering (AUIC) (3rd year Bachelor/Laurea students Master of Science/Laurea Magistrale students) 1

2 The estimated cost for the workshop participation is about 1455,00 euro (It includes: intercontinental flights tickets, 8 overnights in hotel in rooms for 4 people - including breakfast, transfers from / to the airport, participation at the workshop, excursions to the area of Niagara, 4 lunches and more ). The cost will be confirmed at the time of the final payment due to the Euro-Canadian Dollar exchange rate, airport taxes/fuel surcharges and the number of participants. Selected students will have to fill out the final entry form no later than the February 21 st 2018 with the corresponding payment of the first part of the fee. The confirmation by the selected students must be before 2:00pm of 21 st February 2018 with the simultaneous payment of the participation fee to the arch. 4 WHAT IS FUTURE WAYS OF LIVING? Future Ways of Living (FWOL) is a collaborative design exploration that was initiated by the Institute without Boundaries and Meet the Media Guru to explore the impact of existing and emerging technologies on the way we live. As technology becomes more accessible and pervasive within our lives, our economy and the products, services and systems we interact with on a daily basis, the IwB + MTMG viewed this as an opportunity to engage global thought leaders, students, faculty, industry and public sector organizations to imagine positive futures. The inaugural Future Ways of Living event launched in Milan as an official event of Expo 2015 and aligning with the 10th anniversary of Meet the Media Guru. It was kicked-off with a series of Guru lectures from thought leaders around the world, which was followed by a week-long charrette. Students from around the formed the charrette teams to develop future scenarios, products, services and systems that demonstrate how our lives might be impacted by technology through the lens of 6 core systems that affect the way we live: Mobility; Energy; Communication & Culture; Health & Wellness; Education; and Food. Results from the charrette provided insight to the technologies and trends that are having the most profound impact on these systems, as well as proposed concepts/scenarios that demonstrate how technology might transform and improve these systems in the future. Future Ways of Living 2 was an official event of the 21st Milan Triennale, titled Design after Design. Building upon the results of the first event, this provided an opportunity to redesign the Expo 2015 Site, leveraging the concepts, design principles and values that emerged from FWOL 1. Multidisciplinary teams were encouraged to imagine the digital, physical and social infrastructures needed to accommodate future ways of living through the same systems framework that was used in FWOL 1. Results from the charrette were incorporated into an official exhibit of the 21st Triennale, which launched in June and remained open until fall 2016, engaging the public in a dialogue regarding postexpo initiatives. FUTURE WAYS OF LIVING 3 Future Ways of Living 3 will continue to explore the impact of existing and emerging technologies on the way we live. However, the primary focus will shift from infrastructure systems to the future of work and its impact on creative industries that align with the programs offered through the Centre for Arts, Design & Information Technology: Performing Arts - How will technology enable performing arts to become participatory and immersive? Fashion & Jewellery - How will fashion and jewellery move toward a circular design economy and create smart clothing that enables embedded expression and communication with its users? Experience Design & Branding - How will experience design and branding move toward customized experiences and hyper-realities that add a new digital layer onto our physical environments? Media & Entertainment - How will simulations and visualizations transform the way we consume content and create new narratives within the worlds we live in? Information & Communication Technology (ICT) - How will emergent intelligence and ubiquitous systems emerging as a result of innovations in ICT transform the industry itself? Cultural Heritage - How will technology transform the embodiment (expression) and access (understanding) of culture within our society? FWOL 3 CHARRETTE: APR MAY 5,

5 GBC faculty, students, industry partners and other stakeholders will form teams to develop concepts that demonstrate how digital tools, technologies and trends will transform the workplaces, creative ecosystems and the products, services and systems they output in the future. Each team will be assigned a specific challenge & sector. Insights from Future Ways of Living 3 will help determine how GBC can address the challenges presented by the evolving needs of employers in order to better prepare and train future workers in these sectors. 5
