Summer camp with the Museum of Life and Science is your camper s chance to get hands-on with science and technology without giving up a nanometer of summer fun! We believe in giving kids a fun and safe environment to discover the wonders of science and exercise critical thinking skills. 2

7 pre k - k durham camps Summer Blast Off! Week of: June 10 Are you excited for summer!? So are we! Join us as we dive into a season of new experiences and new friendships. Explore all the wonders of Hideaway Woods, Dinosaur Trail, Magic Wings Butterfly House and more! Your campers will get a taste of everything our Museum has to offer and express their creativity with awesome group projects and crafts! Coral Curiosity Week of: June 17, July 1, July 15, July 29, Aug 12 All aboard! Send your junior marine biologists and oceanographers to camp with us, where they ll have a chance to navigate the seas by the stars, meet animals that live in the water, and build a tasty jellyfish snack! Campers will work together to solve fishy mysteries, explore watery wonderlands, and sing the songs of the sea. Hope to sea you there! Let s Get Building! Week of: June 24, July 8, July 22, Aug 5 Calling all builders! Throughout the week, your camper will choose an architectural project to design, plan and build. We ll look for inspiration in famous buildings from ancient cultures, use Museum exhibits to explore properties of earth and building materials, and learn how to transform a building from a scale model to a final product. In daily engineering challenges, we ll figure out how to build our structures stronger and safer as we test them against natural forces like earthquakes and hurricanes. Let s get building! Little Lab Week of: June 17, July 1, July 15, July 29, Aug 12 Put on your lab coat and enter our science laboratory! Spend a week exploring chemistry through the three phases of matter. We ll investigate color-changing reactions, make bubbly concoctions, and meet a local chemist to learn about their work and share some exciting experiments! Mini Medics Week of: June 24, July 8, July 22, Aug 5 Scrub in, stat! This week we re creating a stuffed animal hospital that will set the scene for medical dramatic play, learning about anatomy, and playing health games. Examine x-rays, listen to your heart beat, and practice wrapping your stuffed animal s broken bone. A crime has occurred at the Museum of Life and Science, and we need your help to solve it. Keep your eyes open for clues as we dust for fingerprints, analyze footprints, and experiment with invisible ink. Come unleash your inner detective and help us untangle this Museum mystery! Tinker-Tots Week of: July 1, July 22, Aug 12 Tinker, make, imagine! You ll be amazed at the things your tinker-tot can do as we inspire their creative problem-solving skills. Join us for a week of engineering as we build contraptions and chain reactions, experiment with different materials, and use our imaginations to invent! Last Blast! Week of: August 19 We can t let summer go without saying goodbye! Join us as we celebrate the season with summertime favorites like cooling off in the clouds in Into the Mist, going behind the scenes to meet the people and animals that bring learning to life, and climbing higher in Hideaway Woods. Create a tie-dyed t-shirt, investigate the science of fireworks, make new friends in camp-wide games, and end the week with a festive family picnic. You won t want to miss this week of playing, creating, and exploring everything summer camp has to offer! Astro-Tots Week of: June 17, July 08, July 22 Calling all astronauts! We will be navigating our solar system, landing on each planet to explore its environment and search for life! Your space traveler will discover how the cosmos grows, and learn the mythology of the night sky inside our portable planetarium. Jungle Explorers Week of: June 24, July 15, July 29 Join us for a week of jungle exploration! We ll globetrot to different rainforests around the world where we ll meet live animals that call these ecosystems home, create models of creatures that live in the jungle, and discover what we can do to help keep these habitats healthy. Let's Create! Week of: June 17, July 08, July 22 Join us as we use science and art to explore the world all around us. We ll spend time outdoors each morning and use what we see and hear as a jumping off point for our artistic creations. We ll make rainbows without rain, build instruments that mimic natural sounds, and create unique textured mosaics. Bones, Brains, & Bandages Week of: June 17, July 1, July 15, July 29, Aug 12 Join us for a week of exploring the human body and learning how to stay healthy as we run our own stuffed animal hospital. Find out how physical activity affects your heart rate, examine x-rays, and learn all about the human brain. We ll use everything we learn to make sure we keep our stuffed animals (and ourselves) in tip-top health! Chemical Curiosities Week of: June 24, July 8, July 22, Aug 5 Grab your safety goggles, we re investigating chemical reactions! Join us as we create and test everything from bubbling concoctions to oozing masses. We ll investigate color-changing chemicals, create crystals, and even have a special appearance by a local chemist to learn about their work and share some exciting experiments! Crime Investigators Week of: June 17, July 1, July 15, July 29, Aug 12 There's a mystery at the Museum of Life and Science! Help us crack the case while we explore the science behind crime solving tactics. We ll dust for fingerprints, analyze footprints, and decode secret messages. Let s put our heads together to unravel this Museum mystery! Junior Architects Week of: June 17, July 1, July 15, July 29, Aug 12 Will your structure stand up to the test? Your budding architect will choose a design project to work on over the course of the week. We ll start by making sketches, transform them into scale models and put on the finishing touches by the end of the camp. We ll look for inspiration in structures from ancient cultures and our own Triangle cityscapes and figure out how to make our structures stronger and safer through daily engineering challenges. Using kid-friendly programming tools, we ll work as a team to design and build helpful robots with LEGO WeDo kits. We ll log in to our imaginations as we use MIT s Scratch programming software to create our own code! This camp has Friday afternoon open house for parents + $10 materials fee LEGO Jam: Creature Creation Week of: June 17, July 1, July 15, July 29, Aug 12 Calling all young inventors, it s time to create! We ll use LEGO WeDo kits to set our own creature-themed robots in motion. With the help of our awesome instructors, build and program your creations to chomp, roar, and play drums! We ll even meet some live animals to inspire imagination! This camp has Friday afternoon open house for parents + $10 materials fee Oceans Alive! Week of: June 24, July 8, July 22, Aug 5 Ahoy! In Oceans Alive! camp, we re going to get our feet wet with meeting some aquatic animals, then take a deeper dive by investigating coral, seawater chemistry, and marine biology. Your campers will care for a sandy critter, investigate strange floating creatures, and sample saltwater growing plants! They ll enjoy a week of fishy fun, no life jacket required! Artist s Laboratory Week of: June 24, July 15, July 29 Spend the week with other young artists and scientists as we explore the connection between art, science, and nature. Throughout the week we ll tackle projects that allow us to enjoy both the process of creating art and the final product: we ll build and play an electric piano using bananas, create a nature-based sculpture, and experiment with a variety of printmaking techniques, just to name a few. We ll investigate the similarities and differences of this diverse set of ecosystems and learn how we can help preserve these important habitats. Rainforest rangers will discover what it takes for living organisms to survive in a rainforest and create a model of a unique rainforest-dwelling creature! This week we ll take inspiration from the Great Pyramids, modern marvels, and our local skyline to plan and construct a miniature urban cityscape. Transform your ideas from sketches into scale models, experiment with earth materials to test for strength and durability, then pit your structures against the catastrophic forces of hurricanes, floods and earthquakes. Will your structure stand up to the test? This camp takes place in an outdoor shelter on the Museum s campus Arcade Adventure Week of: June 24, July 29 Bleep Bloop, Zip Zap! Plug in to the creative problem-solving and engineering that go into game design. We ll study the science behind the fun, by learning about light, sound, and electricity, designing our own working games, and doing some computer programming. By the end of the week, we will open our very own Maker Arcade for all to enjoy! Daring Detectives Week of: June 17, July 8, July 15, Aug 5 Campers will traverse all around the Museum searching for clues and solving puzzles as they unravel the mystery they will find at their campsite. Using different scientific techniques, such as fingerprint dusting, fiber analysis, chromatography, ultra-violet investigation, and decomposition studies, these daring detectives will collect all their hypotheses and clues in their investigative journals to make their guesses at the end of the week. This camp takes place in an outdoor shelter on the Museum s campus LEGO EV3: Code Creators Week of: July 1, July 15, Aug 12 Looking to grow your programming skills in LEGO and beyond? This week is tailor-made for the aspiring engineer! We ll take a deep dive below using SeaGrant and NOAA resources to investigate ocean acidification, meet animals in need of species survival strategies, and begin to create plans for resilience for our oceans. Campers will meet and work alongside ocean scientists, investigate the health of aquatic ecosystems on our campus, and take home strategies on how to continue the important work of saving our oceans in their own communities. Join us for a fun-filled week of painting, sculpting and experimenting. We ll design an electric piano using bananas, create a collaborative natural weaving piece, and snap shots of the world around us as we experiment with photography. At the end of the week, take home your portfolio of one of a kind works of art! Species Conservation Week of: June 17, July 8, July 22 Join us for a week of animal exploration! Get up close to learn about wild animals and how we can protect them in their native habitats. Design a field guide, investigate feather aerodynamics, and dissect dynamic diets. We ll learn what it takes to observe animals in the wild, and even meet some of the creatures that call the Museum home. Test Pilot Week of: June 24, July 15, July 29 Test out your flying skills as we investigate drone flight. Learn how to fly a mini-drone that s yours to take home while we work together to build and navigate an obstacle course. 23 6th - 8th grade durham camps Digital Creators Week of: June 17, July 15 Got YouTube on the Brain? Let's put that to use in this camp of digital content creation and emerging technology. Participants will create a YouTube channel - shooting, editing, and uploading their own videos (millions of subscribers not quite yet guaranteed). They will explore Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (AR/VR), creating simple AR apps and 360 videos for viewing. Their digital ideas will be given physical form with the museum's 3D printers and laser cutter. This camp has an additional $10 materials fee LEGO Robotics Week of: July 8, July 29 Join us for an entire week of building and programing fun! We ll use LEGO Mindstorm EV3 kits as we design, build, and program our own creations. Work as a team to solve tricky engineering challenges and use programming software like MIT s Scratch and Microsoft s MakeCode to control our robots! This camp has Friday afternoon open house for parents + $10 materials fee Minecraft Modders Week of: July 1, Aug 5 Minecraft experts, get ready for an entire week of building and coding adventures! We ll work as a team to discover a whole new side of the Minecraft universe. Collaborate and learn how to write code modifications (mods) using both block-based and Javascript languages to engineer your own custom version of Minecraft! 25 My son has been attending summer camps at the Museum of Life and Science exclusively since he was a rising first grader. He is now a rising sixth grader, loves science, and hopes to volunteer at the museum starting next year. I am thrilled that these camps have created a homeaway-from-home atmosphere for my son, has instilled a love for science, and has encouraged him to be a volunteer. - Parent of a 6th grade camper 25

27 NEW! audacity labs four-week session july 8 - august 2 In a first-of-its-kind for the Triangle region, teen participants become entrepreneurs. Audacity Labs is a collaboration between Duke University's Innovation & Entrepreneurship initiative, American Underground, Re:City, and the Museum of Life and Science. Participants will be immersed in the skills and tools of the modern entrepreneur, including lean start-up, Human Centered Design, and the basics of coding. They will develop and prototype their own concept for a business or social enterprise, culminating in a pitch day in downtown Durham. Due to its ambitious nature, this camp requires a four-week commitment, and is limited to a small cohort of participants (rising 9th-12 graders) for the pilot. Camp is to run from July 8 - August 2 and will be based at our partner locations in downtown Durham. The four-week session is $1,360 for members and $1,500 for non-members. This camp runs from 9am-3pm daily. Extended care options (morning or afternoon) are not available for this camp. 27

Changes to individual camp sessions may be made up to two weeks before a session start as available. Refunds and changes will incur a $30.00 fee per camp session.
