Your curious camper will spend the week building enrichment toys to give Museum animals, exploring diets, and discovering what animals need to stay healthy. Down on the Farm Week of: July 4, August 1 Calling all farmyard lovers! We re growing minds with a week of handson, farm-centric science. Your junior farmer will love exploring how we care for the Museum s farm animals, help with farmyard chores, learn how we grow our favorite foods and get them to the grocery store.

5 AT THE MUSEUM 3 Digging for Dinos Week of: June 13, July 11, August 8 Does your kid s vocabulary consist mostly of cretaceous, -saurus, and fossil? We ll play like a paleontologist on our Dinosaur Trail, create our own take-home fossils, and discover what a Tyrannosaurus had in common with a chicken. Sea Squirts Week of: June 27, July 25, August 15 Do you have an ocean lover that s ready to set sail? We ll embark on a week-long ocean adventure as we move like ocean animals and dive deeper to explore different ocean environments. We ll care for sandy critters, create underwater eruptions, and enjoy a jellyfish-inspired snack. Nature Adventurers Week of: June 13, July 18 This could be the summer your camper develops a lifelong love of nature! We ll identify turtles and learn how to protect their nests, track down birds using homemade binoculars, and investigate plants and flowers up-close. lifeandscience.org/summercamp

6 4 Camps for Preschoolers & Kindergarteners Short Stories, Tall Tales Week of: June 27, July 4, July 18, August 15 Send your camper on a storybook adventure where they ll explore treasured fairytales and folklore through science. We ll plant a beanstalk, befriend a dragon, and experiment with houses of brick and straw. Your camper will be awestruck as we explore constellation mythology inside our StarLab planetarium. Magic Makers Week of: July 4, July 25, August 8 Abracadabra, alakazam! We ll mix magic potions, conduct astonishing chemical reactions, and create our own magician s outfit. Your camper will love meeting live animals who walk on walls and disappear before their very eyes. Sun, Fun, Science Week of: July 18, August 15 Beat the heat with a week of cool science! We ll spend the week exploring hands-on experiments, get an up-close look at Museum animals, and investigate solar science. Campers should come prepared to get wet! Tinker Kids Week of: June 20, August 8 Calling all tinker-tots! Join us for a week of experimentation as we engineer a chain reaction marble maze and build a beeping circuit. These are just some of the building challenges that await your curious builder!

8 6 Camps for 1st & 2nd Graders Deep Sea Divers Week of: July 4, August 1, August 22 Get ready to dive into a week of ocean investigations that would make any sea captain envious! We ll design our own plankton and and light up the ocean depths with bioluminescence. From exploring coral reefs to decoding the physiology of color-changing cuttlefish, this week is all about deep sea fun no scuba gear needed! Hot Summer, Cool Science Week of: June 13, June 27, July 11, August 1 The temperatures are rising but we re staying cool with a week of hands-on science fun. We ll investigate solar science, create chemical reactions, and explore animal adaptations with live animal encounters. Your camper will love cooling off with an icy concoction and water play. Eco Explorers Week of: June 20, June 27, July 25 Watch your child s excitement about nature fly as high as a bird this summer! We ll search for raptors in our 84-acre wooded habitat and create a homemade field guide to help navigate our search for insects, plants, and fungi samples. We ll even create a piece of art by using science to extract pigments from our natural specimens!

9 AT THE MUSEUM 7 Dinosaurs Unearthed Week of: June 20, July 18, August 22 Here s your dino-loving kid s chance to dig deeper into their favorite type of science! We ll put together dino skeletons, discover what prehistoric rocks can tell us about dinosaur traits, and experiment with more techniques real paleontologists use in the field. Junior Veterinarians Week of: June 13, June 27, July 18, August 8 This fun-filled week takes your critterobsessed camper into the world of animal science and veterinary fun! We ll discover why play is important in an animal s life and even design our own enrichment toys for the Museum s resident creatures. Farmyard Bash Week of: July 11, August 8, August 15 We re growing minds with this week of hands-on plant and animal science. Your camper will dig investigating soil and compost under the microscope as we explore our pollinator, rain, and edible garden exhibits. Help out with animal care and perform farmyard chores. 10 8 Camps for 1st & 2nd Graders Marvelous Makers Week of: July 4, July 25 You ll be amazed at the things your mini-maker can do as we put their creative problem-solving skills to the test. Campers will experiment with pushing, pulling, and gravitational forces as we build bridges, airplanes, and more. We ll investigate kid-friendly computer programming and even learn how to bring cardboard to life using automatons. Stories Alive! Week of: June 13, July 25, August 8 Enchanted woods and formidable fortresses are all in a day s play at this camp! Your lover of tall tales will be amazed as we dive deeper into the science behind their favorite stories. They ll meet some of the live animals from their favorite books, plant a beanstalk to take home, and explore constellation mythology in our portable StarLab planetarium. Science Magic Week of: June 20, July 11, August 1, August 15 Your magician-in-training will be dazzled and amazed as they explore how science can help us perform amazing tricks and feats. We ll investigate magical magnets, interesting illusions, curious chemistry, and how awe-inspiring animals walk on walls and disappear before our very eyes.

11 AT THE MUSEUM 9 LEGO Jam: Space Adventure Week of: June 27, July 4, July 25, August 1, August 15 Does your child love using LEGOs to build things that could soar the skies, move rocks on Mars, and fly to the moon? We ll study Earth-bound vehicles like planes and ships by building and programming them, then blast off into space as we create space shuttles, satellites, and robotic rovers. LEGO Jam: Animals Alive Week of: June 13, June 20, July 11, July 18, August 8 In this camp, we ll use LEGO Robotics kits created just for younger inventors to build all kinds of creature-themed robots. Campers will use kid-friendly programming to control an alligator s chomp, construct a lion with a loud roar, and make a monkey play the drums to their very own beat! lifeandscience.org/summercamp

12 10 Camps for 3rd 5th Graders Junior Ecologists Week of: July 4, July 11, August 8 What secrets can we learn from the artifacts animals leave behind? Your naturelover will go wild mapping the Museum s wetland, searching for tadpoles, and testing the water quality. We ll use our gathered data to sample local wildlife for diversity and explore the health factors of different habitats. This camp is held in a sheltered outdoor classroom. Super Cool Summer Science Week of: June 20, July 4, August 8 Get ready to stay cool with a week of mind-boggling science fun! Your camper will have a blast harnessing the power of the sun, investigating animal adaptations, and dabbling in rocket science! We ll cool off with an icy homemade treat and dive into the science of chemical reactions. Tinker, Make, Engineer Week of: July 11, July 18, July 25, August 1 If your kid loves experimenting, designing, and creating, this is the camp for them! We ll invent a working pinball game, build a super sailcar, and use motion sensors to make our creations even faster!

13 AT THE MUSEUM 11 Animal Keeper in Training Week of: June 20, June 27, July 25, August 1 Spend the week at our animal outpost where junior keepers will learn amongst the animals in their Museum habitats. Campers will get a hands-on look at the techniques used by Keepers at the Museum and will even dissect an owl pellet for a unique look at animal diets! This camp is held in a sheltered outdoor classroom. Game Science Week of: June 20, July 11, August 1 We ve got gaming down to a science in this hands-on creative design camp! Your camper will experiment with creating their own dice, building a role playing game, and collecting trading cards of their own design. NanoScience Week of: July 4, July 25, August 15 Your child will have a blast exploring the tiny world of nanoscale science. We ll discover the strange behavior of ordinary things at small scales and examine how nature uses nanoscience to survive. Campers will explore nanoparticles through the science of sunscreen and biomimicry with the help of some Museum animals. Magician s Apprentice Week of: June 13, June 27, July 18 Your camper will explore the scientific principles behind amazing tricks and illusions that will leave you asking, How d you do that? We ll investigate sleight of hand tricks, optical illusions, animals with their own disappearing acts, and more! lifeandscience.org/summercamp

14 12 Camps for 3rd 5th Graders Minecraft Marvels Week of: June 13, July 11, July 18, July 25, August 8, August 15 Is your child a Minecraft expert builder in creative mode or do they battle mobs in survival mode? Conduct physics experiments with in-game objects, discover how math makes the Minecraft universe run, and investigate history by exploring replicas of ancient architectural wonders. Minecraft Marvels (Girls Only) Week of: June 27 Have a daughter who loves Minecraft? She ll love discovering famous female video game developers like Roberta Williams, and connecting with other girls who love Minecraft in this special session of our popular Minecraft Marvels camp.

15 AT THE MUSEUM 13 LEGO Lab EV3 Week of: June 13, July 18, August 1, August 15 We ll use LEGO s latest Mindstorms EV3 kits to design, build, and program our own robots. Your camper will have a blast building robots that can sing songs by sensing colors, navigate obstacle courses with ultrasonic detection, and imitate the movements of different animals. LEGO Lab NXT: Creature Edition Week of: June 20, August 8, August 15 Learn about a variety of animal adaptations and program creatures that react to sights and sounds using LEGO WeDo and Mindstorm NXT kits. Meet live animals to help your team design a specialized creature with adaptations for its own unique environment! LEGO Lab NXT: Creature Edition (Girls Only) Week of: June 13 Get ready for a girls-only adventure like no other! We re exploring the world of bugbots and biomimicry in this creature-filled camp. Your daughter will love this unique look at animal adaptations using LEGO WeDo and Mindstorm NXT kits to program creatures that react to sights and sounds. We ll also investigate famous female engineers and connect with other girls who love robotics. LEGO Lab NXT: Space Exploration Week of: June 27, July 4, August 22 Do you have what it takes to get your LEGO creation to Mars? We ll use LEGO WeDo and Mindstorm NXT kits to design, build, and program astronomical robots. The marvelous world of Minecraft is about to get even better with this in-depth exploration! Wildlife Biologist Week of: June 13, July 18 Your camper will have a blast at our wildlife field station for a week of in-depth wildlife biology exploration! Campers will learn first-hand what it takes to conduct field work, care for Museum animals, and go behind the sciences with Animal Keepers. This camp is held in a sheltered outdoor classroom. LEGO Robotics EV3 Week of: June 27, July 11, July 25 LEGO s latest Mindstorms EV3 kits will be at the heart of this week of designing, building and programming fun! Team up to solve tricky engineering challenges, test out the expanded color and ultrasonic sensing, and build a sumobot to battle at the end of the week!

18 16 SUMMER CAMP IN CHAPEL HILL Camps for Preschoolers & Kindergarteners Animals in Motion Week of: July 11, July 25 This camp will use your child s curiosity to fuel a week-long exploration into how animals jump, fly, waddle, and swim. We ll create our own flying contraptions, construct habitats for critters that camouflage, and meet Musuem animals with amazing abilities!

19 IN CHAPEL HILL 17 Mystery Hunters Week of: July 11, July 25 We re following the footprints into the curious world of mysteries! Your camper will love investigating fingerprints, using their senses to identify mystery objects, and making predictions using found clues. We ll put our sleuthing skills to the test as we work together to solve a brain teasing mystery! Little Lab Week of: July 18, August 1 This week is all about hands-on experiments that are kid-friendly and kid-approved. We ll look for hidden colors in markers, make chemistry cookies, and invent a secret slime formula. Your camper will explore the methods real chemists use in their labs as we create one-of-a-kind concoctions, from crazy crystals to silly slime. Prepare to learn with your child - new concoctions will be created each day! Super Sleuths Week of: July 18, August 1 Let s put our heads together and unravel this Museum mystery. We ll investigate the evidence our surprise guest left behind as we decipher footprints and decode secret messages. 23 IN CHAPEL HILL 21 Chemistry from [Al] to [Zn] Week of: July 18, August 1 In this camp we ll investigate the chemistry behind our favorite foods, classic toys, and even our natural environment. We ll dive into experiments that fizz, pop, and change colors as we learn how to spot chemical reactions. Crime Solvers Week of: July 11, July 25 We ll learn what it takes to be a forensic scientist as we dust for fingerprints, analyze hair samples, and identify insects under a microscope. We ll even stage a mock crime scene in our classroom - it s up to your camper to use their newfound skills to crack the case! lifeandscience.org/summercamp

Register for the camp appropriate to the grade your camper will enter in the Fall 2016 school year. Four-year-olds must reach their 4th birthday by the first day of the camp you ve registered for (proof of age may be required). All campers must be potty-trained and able to use the bathroom independently prior to starting camp. Schedule Changes & Cancellations The Museum can grant refunds and perform session changes only when received before May 27, Cancellations received after May 27, 2016 will not be eligible for a refund. 25 AT THE MUSEUM 23 A Day At Camp Our official camp hours are from 9:00am to 3:00pm, but with our extended care programs added on, you can drop your child off at any time between 8:00 9:00am and pick them up anytime between 3:00 5:30pm.
