taking the next generation of explorers to the heart & soul of Science itself. A LEGACY OF EXPERIENTIAL SCIENCE The first scientists didn t work in a lab. They worked in the real world. Climbing mountains to find rare species, deep sea diving to explore the depths of the untamed oceans and soaring the open skies in experimental craft, they pioneered the path for modern scientists to follow in their footsteps and their flippers. Today, the University of Miami s Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science and the Abess Center for Ecosystem Science & Policy, in partnership with the National Geographic Society, are pioneering an Exploration Science Initiative to take the next generation of explorers to the heart and soul of science itself: through the power of experience. 2
Science For A New Frontier Scientists have only begun to scratch the surface of our planet s mysteries. Our understanding of the earth s environment is limited by our research, especially in extreme environments. These environments in the remote sea, underground and at the interface of the Earth s surface and atmosphere are vital pieces for solving the ecological puzzles that face our planet. Photo: N. Hammerschlag 4
Photo: W. Skiles The Hands-On Research Experience As science grows more specialized, many of the projects underway require hundreds of hours of hands-on research. Exploration Science combines scientific research with an outreach and educational platform that allows the general public, young and old, to join University of Miami researchers for experiential and virtual expeditions in ecological, oceanographic, aviation and diving research. Utilizing new technologies to engage and educate the public, our scientists involve non-scientists of all ages in actual expeditions, training them to augment research efforts and drastically shorten research timelines by becoming the eyes and ears of expert researchers. 6
programs at a glance exploration science initiative Exploration Science is the applied practice and study of field-based research using a variety of methods, technologies and approaches to answer specific questions using scientific inquiry and expedition skills, within a context that recognizes the cultural and ethical implications of such work. Opportunity for non-scientists to participate in experiential and virtual expeditions in ecological, oceanographic, aviation and diving research. Foster student discoveries through high-impact investigations. Formal training in Exploration Science skills through master s and certificate programs. Engage K-12 students and the general public through innovative technology and unique curriculums that provide experiences in the field, in the classroom and online. Photo: J. Heinerth 8
exploration Science Opportunities Amplified by an extensive virtual network through which school children follow and participate in expeditions from their classrooms, the Exploration Science initiative provides opportunities for non-scientists to participate richly in field research utilizing innovative communication and education technologies. Opportunities Include: Satellite tagging and ecological research worldwide Aviation-based atmospheric and environmental sampling Underwater aquatic and geological surveys Gamefish tagging expeditions Coral reef restoration projects Sustainable aquaculture technology deployment Underwater archaeology Research vessel and submersible expeditions for oceanographic and biological sampling High-altitude hurricane reconnaissance flights River and underwater bio-diversity-focused cave expeditions Master s Degree & Certificate Programs In Exploration Science The Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science and the Abess Center for Ecosystem Science & Policy offer a powerful combination of classroom and extensive hands-on, field-based courses for this one-year professional master s degree. For groups, agencies and individuals, we are teaming up with National Geographic to create custom certificate programs that caters to each entity s specific needs and goals. Core Courses Include: Maritime and aviation meteorology Field research tools and skills Logistics planning, field-medic and survival training History and ethics of exploration Example Electives Include: Field multi-media communication and production technologies Tropical ecology Example Electives Include (continued): Hurricane and climate science Aquaculture management Underwater archaeology Environmental anthropology Science writing Science diving Small vessel operations 10
