4 Instaation Instaation Instaation Where to Mount Your Unit You wi get optimum performance from your detector if you Mount it at a point approximatey in the center of the vehice, as ow as possibe on the front windshied without obstructing the unit s view of the road either to the front or rear. You can aso mount it directy on the dashboard. Windshied Mounting Attach the rubber cups to the bracket. Make sure the rubber cups and your windshied are cean. Push the bracket firmy onto the windshied. The unit s ens must not be bocked and the LaserEye shoud have a cear view out the back window to aow 360 detection. The LaserEye Shoud Have a ear View Attach the detector to the bracket. To adjust the ange if necessary, genty push or pu on the bracket to bend it. DO NOT use the detector to bend the bracket. Pug the power cord into the detector. Radar and aser signas pass through gass but not through other materias and objects. Objects that can bock or weaken incoming signas incude: n Windshied wiper bades n Mirrored sun screens n Dark tinting at the top of the windshied n Heated windshieds currenty avaiabe on some vehices (Instacear for Ford, Eectricear for GM). onsut your deaer to see if you have this option. Pug the cigarette ighter adapter on the power cord into your vehice s cigarette ighter. 5 Dashboard Mounting Instaation Getting Started Getting Started 1. Pace the detector on the dashboard to find a ocation where the unit has a cear, eve view of the road and is parae to the road s surface. The ange ANNOT be adjusted after mounting 2. Remove the paper backing from one side of the hookand-oop fastener. 3. Attach the pad to the dashboard at your chosen ocation and remove the other paper backing. Power Indicator Screen zz 4. Attach the detector to the hook-and-oop fastener. You can remove and reattach the unit as often as you ike. 5. Pug the power cord into the detector. To Turn On The Unit And Adjust The Voume Rotate the On-Off/ Voume contro cockwise (away from you). Pug the cigarette ighter adapter on the power cord into your vehice s cigarette ighter. NOTE In some vehices, power is suppied to the cigarette ighter even whie the ignition is Off. 6 Settings Settings Settings When changing the Settings on your detector, pease keep in mind: n Each time the unit is turned On the factory settings of Highway and Auto Mute-On wi be set. They can be changed whie the unit is in use as described in the foowing sections. Highway/ity Mode Setting your detector to ity mode deays a X band audio aerts at ower signa strength eves. (A singe beep wi sound when the signa is first detected.) This wi reduce fase aerts whie you are driving in, or near, urban areas where there are many sources for conficting X band signas such as microwave towers and automatic door openers. To change settings, foow the procedure isted beow, which indicates what you wi see and hear as you compete each step. The factory setting is Highway mode. Highway Mode zz ity Button Press and reease Muting an Aert Your detector aows you to quicky turn Off an audio Aert by momentariy pressing the Mute button. If you press the Mute button a second time during the Aert, the audio Aert wi be turned back On. Auto Mute Mode Auto Mute wi automaticay reduce the audio voume of a aerts after four seconds for as ong as the signa is detected. The factory setting for Auto Mute is On. 7 Settings Settings Radar Aert Settings The detector aows you to choose whether it wi show aerts on the X, K and Ka Bands. The factory settings are: X, K, and Ka Band On. To Turn X Band On and Off Dim Button ity Button Mute Button Whie no signa is being detected, press and hod both the Dim and Mute buttons for four seconds. VG-2 Aert Settings Poice use radar detector detectors (RDDs) to spot users of radar detectors. Your detector is abe to identify signas from VG-2 RDDs and can provide aerts when any of these or simiar devices are in use near your vehice. Your detector is invisibe to VG-2 RDDs. You can choose whether you want to be aerted to VG-2 RDD signas. The factory setting for VG-2 aert is Off. 8 Detection Detection Signas Detected The tabes on the foowing pages show you the types of Signas your detector wi detect, as we as the visua aerts it provides for each of them. Aerts A distincty different Aert tone is used for each type of signa detected (incuding separate tones for each aser signa). For X, K and Ka band radar signas, the tones wi repeat faster as you approach the signa source. The repeat rate of the tones gives you usefu information about the signa detected. (See responding to aerts on page 13.) Visua Dispay An indication of the type of signa detected and, for radar signas, the signa strength wi appear in the UtraBright Data Dispay. Radar signa strength wi be indicated by steady, fashing, or a combination of steady and fashing LEDs as shown in the signa strength chart beow. 10 Understanding Radar and Laser Understanding Radar and Laser Understanding Radar and Laser Radar Speed Monitoring Systems Three band frequencies have been approved by the Federa ommunications ommission (F) for use by speed monitoring radar equipment: X band GHz K band GHz Ka band GHz Your detector detects signas in a three radar bands, pus Ku band ( GHz), which is an approved frequency used in parts of Europe and Asia. VG-2 VG-2 is a detector detector that works by detecting ow-eve signas emitted by most radar detectors. Your detector does not emit signas that can be detected by VG-2, but does detect VG-2 signas and wi aert you when a device is in use near your vehice. Safety Aert Traffic Warning System F-approved Safety Aert transmitters emit microwave radar signas that indicate the presence of an emergency vehice. Because these microwave signas are within the K band frequency, most conventiona radar detectors wi detect Safety Aert signas as standard K band radar. Your detector, however, is designed to differentiate between standard K band and Safety Aert signas, and give separate aerts for each. Safety Aert technoogy is reativey new. Safety Aert transmitters can be found in imited numbers in a 50 states, but the number is growing. Depending on your ocation, you may not receive these aerts reguary and may often encounter emergency vehices without being aerted. As the number of transmitters increases, these aerts wi become more common. When you receive such an aert, pease watch for emergency vehices ahead of you, on cross streets and behind you. If you see an emergency vehice approaching, pease pu over to the right side of the road and aow it to pass. LIDAR (Laser) The correct name for the technoogy that most peope refer to as aser is actuay LIDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging. LIDAR operates much ike radar. Its signa spreads out ike a radar signa, though not as widey. Unike radar, LIDAR must have a cear ine of sight to its target vehice throughout the entire measurement interva. Obstructions such as sign posts, utiity poes, tree branches, etc., wi prevent vaid speed measurement. Some common questions about LIDAR incude: n Does weather have any affect on LIDAR? Yes. Rain, snow, smoke, fog or airborne dust partices wi reduce the effective range of LIDAR and can, if dense enough, prevent its operation. n an LIDAR operate through gass? Yes. Newer LIDAR guns can obtain readings through most types of gass. However, the aser puse aso can be received through gass to trigger an aarm by your detector. n an LIDAR operate whie in motion? No. Because LIDAR operates by ine of sight, the person using it cannot drive the vehice, aim and operate the gun a at the same time. n Is it ega for poice to use LIDAR? No routine Maintenance is required. If your unit does not appear to be operating propery, pease foow these troubeshooting steps: n Make sure the power cord is propery connected. n Make sure the socket of your vehice s cigarette ighter is cean and free of corrosion. n Make sure the power cord s cigarette ighter adapter is firmy seated in your cigarette ighter. n heck the power cord fuse. (Unscrew the ribbed end cap of the cigarette ighter adapter and examine the fuse. If required, repace it with a 2-amp fuse ony.) This warranty may be enforced by the first consumer purchaser, provided that the product is utiized within the U.S.A. obra wi, without charge, repair or repace, at its option, defective 9 Band Radar/Laser Detectors, products or component parts upon deivery to the obra Factory Service Department, accompanied by proof of the date of first consumer purchase, such as a dupicated copy of a saes receipt. You must pay any initia shipping charges required to ship the product for warranty service, but the return charges wi be at obra s expense, if the product is repaired This warranty gives you specific rights, and you may aso have other rights which vary from state to state.
