Nanmetrics Inc. 1.3 Abut Data Strage Understanding hw and where Centaur stres data will help yu plan and implement effective data access fr yur deplyment Primary Media Centaur cntinuusly recrds seismic data, state-f-health (SOH) data, and cnfiguratin data in a prprietary database called the Stre. The Stre wraps when it is full and recrds ver the ldest data. The frequency with which the Stre wraps is shwn in the Internal Strage sectin f the Health Page. The Stre is lcated n an internal flash media device. Data is recrded t the Stre in Nanmetrics Prtcl (NP) frmat, but seismic data can be streamed in SEEDLink and NP frmats fr netwrked deplyments, and/r archived t remvable media in MiniSEED frmat. In additin, selected SOH channels are available in Steim cmpressed frmats. Fr netwrked deplyments using cntinuus streaming, the Stre is used t back fill any data lst during transmissin dwnstream. Regardless f whether yu deply Centaur as a netwrked r standalne device, the internal strage acts as yur primary media. Yu can retrieve data frm internal strage n the Maintenance page Secndary (r Remvable) Media The mst effective backup fr yur data is t use an SD card as yur secndary (remvable) media, and cnfigure cntinuus archiving. Use an SD card that is frmatted as FAT32 r ext4. The SD card serves tw main functins: 1. Backup fr the primary media fr netwrked r standalne deplyments. 2. Cnvenient data retrieval fr standalne deplyments. When yu enable cntinuus archiving, the Centaur cntinuusly recrds data in MiniSEED frmat t the SD card. Yu can als cnfigure Centaur t archive events and SOH data t the SD card. When the SD card is full, the Centaur cntinues recrding data t its internal strage media, but stps writing data t yur SD card. Any cnfigured streamers are unaffected when the SD card is Revisin: 17935R /07/

Nanmetrics Inc. full. Yu can mnitr the amunt f space that data archiving cnsumes n yur SD card frm the Remvable Media sectin f the Maintenance page. Fr standalne deplyments, swapping ut remvable media is a mre cnvenient way f harvesting data than dwnlading data frm internal strage using a laptp and Ethernet cable. Data retrieval via SD card swap r internal strage dwnlad is referred t as file transfer Data Backup The Centaur reserves a small backup Stre n the remvable media (SD card), if ne is present, r in RAM if n SD card is available. The backup Stre is used in the rare event that internal strage fails. The backup Stre des nt grw ver time, nr des the backup Stre verwrite yur data. Fr netwrked deplyments using cntinuus streaming, the backup Stre can backfill a limited amunt f data lst during transmissin. As mentined abve, the mst effective way t back up yur data is t archive data cntinuusly t yur SD card. 1.4 Cables and Accessries Nanmetrics ffers ptinal equipment that can add cnvenience t the installatin and use f yur Centaur. 15 Nanmetrics Inc. 2.0 Installatin Tasks At a high level, we recmmend that yu perfrm the fllwing tasks t install a Centaur: 1. Insert an SD card (ptinal). 2. Chse a deplyment ptin. 3. Perfrm the initial cnfiguratin. 4. Develp a grunding plan. 5. Cnnect and grund the device. Befre leaving the installatin site (pst-installatin) Mnitr the LEDs and trublesht any errrs that ccur. 2.1 Abut SD Cards Nanmetrics tests with industrial-quality SD cards that have prven t be very reliable. SD cards are available in 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB capacities. If yu prefer t supply yur wn SD cards, please cntact technical supprt fr infrmatin abut SD cards that have been qualified by Nanmetrics Insert SD Card The Centaur can be cnfigured t archive MiniSEED data, event data, and SOH data t an SD 1 card frmatted as FAT32 r ext4. The event data can be archived in multiple industry-standard frmats. Befre data archiving can be enabled, an SD card (frmatted as FAT32 r ext4) shuld be inserted int the media slt n the Centaur. When prperly inserted and ready fr use, the Media LED will blink green and the Media Eject LED behind the media dr will be slid red fr 10 minutes (it will then turn ff t save pwer) Remve the SD Card T safely remve the SD card, push and release the Media Eject buttn in the media bay. Wait fr the Media Eject LED t turn slid green, which indicates that it is safe t remve the card. 1 Secure Digital Revisin: 17935R /07/

Nanmetrics Inc. T prevent data lss r crruptin, the data cartridge and SD card shuld never be physically remved while the SD status LED is blinking in any clur SD Card Full r Crrupt The status f the SD card in use is indicated by the Media LED n the instrument, and n these Web Interface pages: Health > Strage sectin Maintenance > Remvable Media sectin If yur SD card is full r crrupt, the instrument cntinues recrding data t its Stre, but stps writing data t yur SD card. Any cnfigured streamers are unaffected when the SD card is full r crrupt. SD Card Trubleshting The mst effective way t retrieve data directly frm the Centaur's internal strage 1 is by dwnlading it frm the Maintenance page t yur cmputer. T ensure sufficient space n yur SD card, yu can remve lder time series data frm yur cntinuus archive. The safest methd fr transferring data frm the SD card is t cnnect it t yur cmputer. Alternatively, yu can use secure FTP and the client applicatin f yur chice t manage yur cntinuus archive files. Individual archive files can als be dwnladed frm the Dwnlad archive files link frm the Maintenance page. If yur SD card is crrupt r damaged, yu can try t repair it frm the Maintenance page. Yu may als re-frmat the card. Repair and re-frmatting f SD cards is perfrmed in the Remvable Media sectin f the Maintenance page. 2.2 Chse a Deplyment Optin The Centaur can be deplyed as a stand-alne device t recrd cntinuus data n remvable media fr extended perids f time r as a netwrk device that allws data dwnlads, data 1 The device writes all f the data it receives t an internal strage. The internal strage wrks like a ring buffer and it wraps arund when it is full and recrds ver the ldest data. Revisin: 17935R /07/

Nanmetrics Inc. streaming, and remte cnfiguratin changes while als recrding data t the strage media. Regardless f whether data is streamed and/r archived t secndary, remvable media (SD card), the Centaur cntinuusly recrds data t internal strage. Fr mre infrmatin, see Abut Data Strage Stand-alne Deplyment In a stand-alne deplyment, a Centaur is deplyed as a d-it-all device. The recrded time series data is written in NP frmat t the internal strage n a Linux ext4 frmatted CF card. A technician must visit the Centaur in the field t retrieve the data, which is dne by replacing the remvable media with empty media r by dwnlading data frm the internal strage Netwrked Deplyment In a netwrked deplyment, a Centaur is deplyed as part f a netwrk and the recrded time series data is written in NP frmat t the internal strage and then streamed ver the netwrk t a data acquisitin server, such as Apll Server. As an additinal backup, the Centaur can be cnfigured t cntinuusly write the time series data in MiniSEED frmat t a FAT32 r ext4 frmatted SD card. The field technician des nt typically visit the Centaur in the field after it has been installed, but instead uses a Web brwser t make any necessary cnfiguratin changes and receive the streamed data Data Access Optins Typically, the data access methd yu chse is influenced by the remteness and duratin f the deplyment. The Centaur can be deplyed as a: Netwrk device that allws data dwnlads, cntinuus streaming t a data acquisitin server (such as Apll Server), and remte cnfiguratin changes. Stand-alne device t recrd cntinuus data n remvable media fr extended perids f time (accessed later via file transfer r retrieving the SD card when a technician is visiting the site). 18 Nanmetrics Inc. Regardless f whether data is streamed and/r archived t a secndary remvable media (SD card), the Centaur cntinuusly recrds data t internal strage. Fr mre infrmatin, see Abut Data Strage. Cntinuus Streaming Cntinuus data streaming is usually the preferred data access methd fr lnger term deplyments. Cntinuus data streaming is enabled thrugh the use f a cellular mdem, Lw Earth Orbit (LEO) mdem, r VSAT cmmunicatin system, such as Nanmetrics' Libra II VSAT System. File Transfer File transfer is mre cmmn fr shrt-t-medium term deplyments when streaming is nt pssible r practical. Yu can remve the SD card frm the media bay and swap in a new SD card withut causing any data gaps between the recrds n the tw cards. Alternatively, yu can cnnect t the Centaur via Ethernet t dwnlad the data stred in its internal flash memry. Data Frmats Each data access methd prvides specific data recrding frmats. Fr a list f available data frmats yu can use fr file transfer frm SD card r internal strage, see Recrding (Cntinuus) and Recrding (Events) in the specificatins. T view the data frmats available fr data streaming, see Data Streaming in the specificatins. Revisin: 17935R /07/

Nanmetrics Inc Use Cases: Deplyment and Data Access The table belw illustrates the typical use cases fr deplyment and data access. Deplyment timeframe Cntinuus data streaming required? Data access ptin Shrt-term (Temprary) Yes Streaming, using: Cellular r Lw Earth Orbit (LEO) mdem/* VSAT N File transfer: Remvable media (SD card) Internal strage via Ethernet (retrieve unit and bring t lab) Medium-term (Semipermanent) Yes N Streaming, using: Cellular r LEO mdem/vsat File transfer: Remvable media (SD card) Lng-term (Permanent) ** Yes Streaming, using: Cellular r LEO mdem/vsat Wired internet * VSAT is nt cmmnly used fr temprary installatins, but there are temprary statins that use VSAT. ** Streaming is nrmally required fr permanent statins because file transfer is ften impractical. 20 Nanmetrics Inc Perfrm the Initial Cnfiguratin Each Centaur cmes factry cnfigured with several default cnfiguratin settings. The factry cnfiguratin addresses the mst cmmn use cases fr the Centaur and means that mst devices will require minimal pre-installatin cnfiguratin. T check the cnfiguratin, yu must cnnect the GPS cable, Ethernet cable, and pwer cable and wait fr the device t pwer up. Once started, yu need t access the Web interface f the Centaur t verify r change the cnfiguratin. Yu shuld ensure the fllwing settings are cnfigured t yur needs prir t deplying the device in the field: Sample rate Sensr type Detectr settings Ethernet settings Streamer settings (Netwrked deplyment) 2.3 Develp a Grunding Plan The pwer cnsumptin f the Centaur varies with factrs such as the GPS receiver duty cycle and the activity f the Ethernet. Typical cnsumptin is listed in the Pwer Usage sectin f the technical specificatins. The mst apprpriate grunding plan will depend n yur applicatin and the installatin envirnment. Fllwing is sme general infrmatin yu can take int accunt when planning grunding fr a Centaur installatin General Cnsideratins Pwer The Centaur pwer cnnectr has 3 pins t allw the Centaur t cnfrm t the site grunding system. Yu can cnnect the pwer return pin and grund, but cmbining grunding and pwer return in the same cnductr limits the site grunding ptins. The recmmended practice is t establish a single grund pint fr the statin and grund everything t that pint, which minimizes the chances f grund lps and signal nise created by the pwer system. Revisin: 17935R /07/

Nanmetrics Inc. Peripheral pwer The Centaur prvides primary pwer t attached peripheral devices via the Sensr cnnectrs. This pwer is switched t allw devices t be cntrlled by the user thrugh the Centaur. The Centaur mnitrs fr ver-current cnditins and will autmatically switch ff pwer t a peripheral if excessive current r a shrt is detected. The vltage prvided t the Centaur is passed n t the attached peripherals. The current demand f each attached peripheral and the cnsequent vltage drp thrugh the Centaur and peripheral cables shuld be taken int cnsideratin when designing the pwer system t ensure that sufficient vltage is supplied t each peripheral. 2.4 Cnnect and Grund the Centaur Yu will need the fllwing items t set up and cnfigure yur Centaur: Pwer supply and cable* Ethernet cable* GPS antenna and cable External SOH cable* if yu want t recrd analg state-f-health (SOH) signals frm ther sensrs Seismmeter cable Cmputer, tablet, r smartphne with ne f the fllwing brwsers installed: Chrme, Firefx r Safari *Nt included. Cnnect the ther end f the grunding wire t a grunding pint at the site. 3. Apply pwer. When yu cnnect the pwer cable t the pwer surce, the Centaur will pwer up immediately. It will take apprximately 4 t 5 minutes fr the device t cmpletely start up. If the device fails t pwer up, the pwer supply vltage might be belw the cnfigured Pwer n threshld. Next step: Lg int the Web Interface. 2.5 GPS Antenna The GPS antenna is n digital grund which has a single pint cnnectin t analg grund and analg grund is cnnected t chassis grund. The GPS antenna des nt have t be islated frm grund. We recmmend that it be independently earthed when using a lng cable; therwise, it can rely n the Centaur fr its safety grund t earth. In cnfiguratins that have lng GPS cables and lightning prtectin, an verall system design apprach must be taken which balances the grunding requirements with the prtectin requirements. This apprach requires an understanding f the Centaur grunding, the sensr grunding, pwer supply grunding, and lcal site grunding. 2.6 Pwer The Centaur pwer cnnectr has 3 pins t allw the instrument t cnfrm t the site grunding system. Yu can cnnect the pwer return pin and grund but cmbining grunding and pwer return in the same cnductr limits the site grunding ptins. The recmmended practice is t establish a single grund pint fr the statin and grund everything t that pint, which minimizes the chances f grund lps and signal nise created by the pwer system. 2.7 Install the SOH sealing plug If yu are nt using the SOH input n the Centaur, it is recmmended that yu install the External SOH sealing plug (part number CON1904) that ships with the Centaur. 29 Nanmetrics Inc. 4.4 Digitizer The Centaur Digitizer has three r six time series data channels that are cnstantly digitizing data. The data frm each f these channels is recrded and written t the internal strage. Yu can capture data at tw cncurrent sample rates by enabling secndary utput, and setting different sample rates n yur primary and secndary channels. Fr example, yu may wish t cntinually stream yur data at a lwer sample rate n primary channels and archive data t an SD card at a higher sample rate n secndary channels. Yu can als cnfigure general settings fr the Centaur Digitizer such as frames per packet n primary and secndary channels, as well as frnt end, input filter, and detectr cnfiguratin settings. The settings fr Digitizer A are fr Sensr A, channels 1 t 3. The settings fr Digitizer B are fr Sensr B, channels 4 t 6. Enable cntinuus data prducts Select this ptin t enable the streaming f cntinuus data prducts, such as QSCD20 data (see als QSCD20 Streaming), and t summarize triggered events Frnt End Input Range [V] The input vltage ranges represent the differential between the sensr psitive and negative signal inputs in vlts peak-t-peak. The maximum input range is 40 vlts peak-t-peak. This represents the case f a differential input signal that at ne peak has +10 V n the psitive input and 10 V n the negative input (20 V peak). At the ther peak, the differential input is 20 V fr a peak-tpeak input range f 40 V. The input range t Digitizer sensitivity mappings are prvided in the Digitizer Perfrmance sectin f the specificatins. If yu want t accurately measure full-scale sensr activity, the input range f the digital recrder must be greater than the maximum utput level f the sensr. Hwever, if the sensr has a very large dynamic range and the input range is set t a large value (t capture full-scale mvement), accuracy will be lst when measuring very weak seismic signals. If yu want t accurately measure very weak seismic signals, the input range f the sensr must be set t a small enugh value t accurately digitize weak signals. If strng seismic events ccur that exceed the cnfigured range, these signals will be clipped. Increased sensitivity (lwer input ranges) als tend t increase verall data vlume. Revisin: 17935R /07/

A detectr is an algrithm that is applied t a channel and is based n either a cnfigured threshld value r a cnfigured STA 1 /LTA 2 rati. As sn as the channel detectr detects that the threshld value r STA/LTA rati has been exceeded, it generates a trigger 3 fr that channel. When the Centaur sees this trigger, it cunts hw many vtes 4 are assigned t the channel that generated that trigger: If the number f vtes are equal t r higher than the cnfigured number f required vtes, an event is declared with the date and time frm the trigger. If nt enugh vtes were received frm the trigger, then the Centaur waits fr additinal triggers fr a cnfigured perid f time t allw fr transmissin latency. If nt enugh vtes are received within the cnfigured perid f time, the triggers are discarded and n event is declared. If enugh vtes are received, an event is declared and written t the internal strage and psted n the Events page. Event declaratin can happen lcally using nly the channels f the Centaur r it can happen acrss a netwrk between multiple devices if yu enable the ptin t share triggers acrss a netwrk. 54 Nanmetrics Inc Events The Centaur uses detectrs cmbined with a vting system t declare an event. When the Centaur sees this trigger, it cunts hw many vtes 4 are assigned t the channel that generated that trigger. If the number f vtes are equal t r higher than the cnfigured number f required vtes, an event is declared with the date and time f the trigger. Cincidence windw [s] The windw f time int which the trigger n times f the channels must fall in rder fr thse channels t be included in the same event. Yu can cnfigure the Centaur t stream this time series data t anther device r applicatin and/r archive it n a remvable media card. Yu can als dwnlad it frm the device using the ptins n the Maintenance page. If yu want the Centaur t detect and declare seismic events in additin t cntinuusly recrding time series data, yu have t enable a detectr fr ne r mre f the time series channels and assign a number f vtes t all channels with enabled detectrs. The Centaur uses the detectrs cmbined with a vting system t declare an event. A detectr is an algrithm that is applied t a channel and is based n either a cnfigured threshld value r a cnfigured STA/LTA rati. As sn as the channel detectr detects that the threshld value r STA/LTA rati has been exceeded, it generates a trigger fr that channel. When the Centaur sees this trigger, it cunts hw many vtes are assigned t the channel that generated that trigger. If the number f vtes are equal t r higher than the cnfigured number f required vtes, an event is declared with the date and time f the trigger. If nt enugh vtes were received frm the trigger, then the Centaur waits fr additinal triggers fr a cnfigured perid f time t allw fr transmissin latency. If nt enugh vtes are received within the cnfigured perid f time, the triggers are discarded and n event is declared.
