We have already talked abut Inventr and hw many mechanical and civil engineers use it t aid in design. We tk a tur f the nuclear dept. and they had a mechanical rbt arm like we had in class nly 10x s bigger. It was just neat t knw that everything we did in class really applies t actual engineers and their research. Hwever, even students wh d nt intend t pursue further engineering educatin will benefit frm the knwledge, team building strategies, and prblem slving abilities taught in these units. Design and Mdeling Unit (DM) Students learn abut the engineering design prcess and hw slid mdeling has influenced their lives, learn sketching techniques, measurement, and cmputer mdeling. Using design briefs and wrking in teams, students create mdels and dcumentatin t slve prblems. They learn hw t use sketching as a means t cmmunicate their ideas as well as the gemetry that is used in parametric mdeling, assembly, and mtin cnstraints. Autmatin and Rbtics Unit (AR) Students discver the histry and develpment f autmatin and rbtics. They learn abut structures, energy transfer, machine autmatin, and cmputer cntrl systems. Students acquire knwledge and skills in engineering prblem slving and explre requirements fr careers in engineering. Energy and Envirnment Unit (EE) Students investigate the imprtance f energy in ur lives and the impact that using energy has n the envirnment. Magic f Electrns Unit (ME) Thrugh hands-n prjects, students explre the science f electricity, the mvement f atms, circuit design, and sensing devices. Intrductin t Engineering (IED)-required This curse intrduces students t the engineering design prcess. They develp their engineering prtfli that will fllw them thrugh all the curses. Wrking in teams they learn hw t use sketching as a means t cmmunicate their ideas as well as the gemetry that is used in parametric mdeling, assembly, and mtin cnstraints. They explre the prductin and marketing f prducts. Principles f Engineering (POE) -required This curse cvers the different types f engineering, the cmmunicatin and dcumentatin that are used by engineers. Mechanisms, thermdynamics, fluid systems, electrical systems and cntrl systems are als cvered. Using the apprpriate frmulas students make static and strength calculatins fr varius materials befre testing them. They explre the fields f reliability engineering and kinematics. They learn and apply prper prgram management strategies thrugh varius team prjects. Aerspace Engineering (AE) This curse expses students t the wrld f aernautics, flight, and engineering. Students wrking in teams are engaged in engineering design prblems related t aerspace infrmatin systems, astrnautics, rcketry, prpulsin, the physics f space science, space life sciences, the bilgy f space science, principles f aernautics, structures and materials, and systems engineering. Bitechnical Engineering (BE) This curse invlves the explratin f bimedical engineering, bi-mlecular genetics, biprcess engineering, agricultural and envirnmental engineering. Thrugh engineering design prjects students learn abut bimechanics, genetic engineering, cardivascular engineering, agricultural bitech, tissue engineering, bimedical devices, frensics, and bi-ethics. They apply bilgical and engineering cncepts t design materials and prcesses that directly measure, repair, imprve, and extend living systems. Civil Engineering and Arch (CEA) This curse invlves several smaller prjects and ne lng-term prject that develps a lcal prperty site. As students learn the varius aspects f civil engineering and architecture, they apply what they learn t the design and develpment f this prperty. It is structured t enable all students t have a variety f experiences that prvide an verview f bth fields. Students wrk in teams, explring hands-n prjects and activities t learn the characteristics f civil engineering and architecture. Cmputer Integrated Manuf. (CIM) This curse invlves the applicatin f 3D cmputer mdeling in the manufacturing and industrial engineering fields. Students learn the prgramming cdes fr cmputer numerical cntrl by writing a prgram, inputting it int the cmputer milling sftware and simulating the creatin f the part. Students design a prduct using the 3D cmputer mdeling sftware, translate it int the CNC cde, and mill it. Rbtics is learned by prgramming varius standalne rutines and handshaking them with the CNC mill. 5

6 Digital Electrnics (DE) This curse cvers the fundamentals f analg and digital electrnics. Students learn abut the different number systems used in the design f digital circuitry. They design circuits t slve pen ended prblems, assemble their slutins, and trublesht them as necessary. Simplificatin f Blean expressins, applicatin f truth tables, and kmapping techniques are als cvered. Students then use cmbinatinal lgic, integrated circuits, and micrprcessrs t slve pen ended prblems. Capstne Research Curse Engineering Design & Develpment (EDD) This curse is the capstne research and develpment curse. Students wrking as individuals r n teams draw frm all their previus experiences in the ther engineering curses. They select a prblem, design a slutin, cnduct patent research, build a prttype, cnduct testing f the prttype, evaluate the test results, and present their cnclusins t an engineering panel. The prject is a yearlng curse that invlves guided independent research by the teacher and engineering/industry mentrs. Many students g n t register their slutins with the United States Patent Office. 6

Fr as lng as I have been invlved in the business wrld, I have been frustrated by the fact that the number f engineering graduates in the U.S. has nt kept pace with demand. Prject Lead The Way addresses that need at its very fundatin by creating effective curricula, by training teachers t present the technical material effectively, and by prviding the resurces required t supprt classrm activities.
