1 Tlkit Applicatin Overview Revised The Natinal Infrmal STEM Educatin Netwrk (NISE Net) is pleased t ffer free Explre Science: Earth & Space 2019 tlkits t new and existing eligible partners in the United States. In cllabratin with NASA, the NISE Netwrk has assembled a new set f engaging, handsn Earth and space science experiences with cnnectins t science, technlgy, and sciety. TOOLKIT CONTENTS & AUDIENCES Three hundred and fifty (350) free Explre Science: Earth & Space physical 2019 tlkits will be awarded t successful applicants frm eligible rganizatins. Activities are designed fr use in children s museums, science centers, science museums, public planetariums and bservatries, and NASA visitr centers in the United States. Activities are designed fr family audiences with a range f experiences apprpriate fr visitrs ages 4 thrugh adult. Explre Science: Earth & Space tlkits will include: Ten hands-n activities t engage the public in Earth and space sciences including: heliphysics, Earth science, planetary science, astrphysics, and their cnnectins t sciety Prfessinal develpment materials including activity training vides Event planning guides Marketing and prmtinal materials In additin t the physical tlkits, all digital materials will be available nline fr free dwnlad. The NISE Netwrk will als be hsting a series f ne-hur nline wrkshps featuring a variety f tpics. All nline wrkshps will be recrded and archived. 2 ELIGIBILITY The physical tlkit is designed fr infrmal science educatin public events and utreach. T be eligible t receive a physical tlkit, rganizatins must be: Lcated in the United States Public infrmal science utreach and educatin institutins such as: science museums and science centers, children s museums, natural histry museums, public planetariums and bservatries, and NASA visitr centers. Please nte that K-12 schls, afterschl prgrams, libraries, parks, and astrnmy clubs are nt eligible t receive physical tlkits. Cnsider dwnlading a digital tlkit if yur rganizatin des nt meet eligibility criteria. Digital tlkits will be available fr dwnlad in February 2019 at APPLICATION PROCESS Applicatins fr the physical 2019 tlkits must be submitted nline using SurveyGizm by Nvember 1, 2018: Please nte that it is NOT pssible t save yur wrk in the SurveyGizm nline frm and return fr additinal edits. Yu may dwnlad the applicatin in PDF and Wrd dcument frmats here: SELECTION PROCESS A ttal f 350 tlkits will be awarded thrugh a cmpetitive award prcess. The NISE Netwrk prject team will review the tlkit applicatins and award tlkits nly t rganizatins that meet the eligibility criteria. Prpsals will underg a peer review prcess by prject representatives. Successful applicatins will demnstrate strng alignment with the prject purpse, cmply with the prject terms, reach lcal underserved audiences, and help the prject achieve gegraphic diversity. If multiple applicatins are received frm the same gegraphic lcatin, applicants will likely be asked t cllabrate n an event and t share a tlkit. Applicants will be infrmed f award status in December

3 REQUIREMENTS Organizatins receiving tlkits are required t: Hst an event in March - May 2019: Hst at least ne public engagement event using yur tlkit. Public events can be stand-alne events OR yu can incrprate yur event int existing STEM events such as: Wrld Water Day, March 22, 2019: Earth Hur, March 30, 2019: Glbal Astrnmy Mnth, April: Yuri's Night, April 12, 2019: Earth Day, April 22, 2019: Natinal Envirnmental Educatin Week, week f Earth Day Astrnmy Day (Spring), May 11, 2019: Astrnmy Week (Spring), May 6-12, 2019: Reprt n the use f the tlkit: Physical tlkit recipients are required t cmplete a shrt nline reprt describing their experiences with the tlkit. Successful applicants will be prvided with a link t the final reprt. Reprts will include ptinal evaluatin questins t capture the impacts f the prject activities n the public. Required reprts must be submitted nline by June 15, In additinal t the required reprt, we encurage yu t participate in partner surveys cnducted by prject evaluatrs. 5 COLLABORATIONS & FINDING LOCAL EXPERTS We strngly encurage yu t cllabrate with lcal experts cnsisting f bth Earth and space science prfessinals and science enthusiasts in yur area. Vlunteer experts are a key ingredient t many successful public engagement effrts. It is up t yur rganizatin t chse yur lcal cllabratrs. Reginal hub leaders can assist yu in finding lcal partners in yur gegraphic area. Tlkits will include training and rientatin materials t help prepare yur event vlunteers and staff fr using the activities. Vlunteer netwrks fcused n astrnmy and space include: 1) The Slar System Ambassadrs Prgram (SSA), 2) The Night Sky Netwrk, and 3) AAS Astrnmy Ambassadrs; these vlunteer netwrks can be searched by state and city t find a pssible vlunteer nearest yu. Lcal clleges and universities can als prvide expertise in Earth and space sciences. 1) The Slar System Ambassadrs Prgram (SSA) is a public utreach prgram designed t wrk with mtivated vlunteers acrss the natin. These vlunteers cmmunicate the excitement f the Jet Prpulsin Lab s (JPL) space explratin missins and infrmatin abut recent discveries t peple in their lcal cmmunities. There are 700 Ambassadrs in 50 states, Washingtn DC, Puert Ric, US Virgin Islands, and Guam. Vlunteer ambassadrs bring the excitement f space t the public. Ambassadrs are space enthusiasts frm varius walks f life wh are interested in prviding greater service and inspiratin t the cmmunity at large. 2) The Night Sky Netwrk is a natinwide calitin f amateur astrnmy clubs bringing the science, technlgy, and inspiratin f NASA's missins t the general public. Night Sky Netwrk members share their time and telescpes t prvide yu with unique astrnmy experiences at science museums, bservatries, classrms, and under the real night sky. 3) AAS Astrnmy Ambassadrs: The American Astrnmical Sciety (AAS), in partnership with the Astrnmical Sciety f the Pacific (ASP), members f the Center fr Astrnmy Educatin (CAE), and ther rganizatins active in science educatin and public utreach (EPO), has launched a series f prfessinal develpment wrkshps and a cmmunity f practice designed t help imprve early-career astrnmers ability t effectively cmmunicate with students and the public. Called Astrnmy Ambassadrs, the prgram prvides mentring and training experiences fr yung astrnmers, frm advanced undergraduates t new faculty. It als prvides access t resurces and a netwrk f cntacts within the astrnmy EPO cmmunity. 4) Clleges and Universities: Many clleges and universities have astrnmy and Earth science departments. Others may have clubs r lcal chapters f prfessinal scieties. Once yu cnnect with a faculty r staff member they shuld be able t als suggest undergraduate and graduate students wh culd vlunteer at yur event. 5

6 FINDING ADDITIONAL VOLUNTEERS In additin t finding subject matter experts, yu will prbably need t recruit ther vlunteers t help with yur event. These resurces, develped thrugh funding frm the NASA Science Missin Directrate (SMD), have undergne a peer-review prcess thrugh which educatrs and scientists ensure the cntent is accurate and useful in an educatinal setting. NASA Museum Alliance: The Museum Alliance is a cmmunity f practice cmprising infrmal science educatrs at museums, science centers, planetariums, NASA Visitr Centers, Challenger Learning Centers, bservatries, zs, aquariums, parks, and nature centers wh wish t share NASA infrmatin with their visitrs. It is intended t bring current NASA Science and Technlgy t visitrs thrugh prfessinal develpment f the museums staff, advance ntice f NASA events, and prvisin f materials such as visualizatins, access t NASA experts, educatinal materials, etc. 6
