3 WHY YOU SHOULD BE CHARTERED If yu re wrking as an engineer and yu re a member f Engineering New Zealand, chances are yu already have the knwledge and skills t shw yu re cmpetent and ethical in yur engineering practice. Our cmpetence-based membership and registratin are great ways t prve yur cmpetence t yur peers, yur emplyer and yur cmmunity. They mark yu ut as a trusted prfessinal and an expert in yur field. If yu want t becme a Chartered Member f Engineering New Zealand, we ll assess yur engineering knwledge against internatinally-benchmarked educatinal, cmpetence and ethical standards. If yu meet the standard, yu ll jin a select grup f engineering prfessinals. Yu can select ne f fur types f cmpetence-assessed Membership: Chartered Member CMEngNZ Chartered Member CMEngNZ (Engineering Technlgist) Chartered Member CMEngNZ (Engineering Technician) Chartered Member CMEngNZ (PEngGel) Yu als have the ptin t jin the Chartered Prfessinal Engineer (CPEng) natinal register. 4 The assessment prcess is the same fr first-time cmpetence-based Membership and CPEng Yu ll need t demnstrate yur cmpetence fr independent practice against the apprpriate standard. Chartered Member (Engineering Technician) If yu want t be assessed fr Chartered Member (Engineering Technician), yu ll need a Dublin Accrdaccredited qualificatin (tw year NZDE in New Zealand) r be able t shw yu ve gained the equivalent level f knwledge. Yu ll need t shw yu can deal with well-defined engineering prblems and carry ut well-defined engineering activities. Chartered Member (Engineering Gelgist) If yu want t be assessed fr Chartered Member (Engineering Gelgist), yu ll need t shw yu can reliably predict the nature f the grund and ften wrk clsely with getechnical engineers. Yu ll need a gelgy degree at hnurs level, a pstgraduate qualificatin in engineering gelgy r be able t demnstrate equivalent knwledge. ONLINE REGISTERS Once yu becme a Chartered Member r a Chartered Prfessinal Engineer, yu ll be included in ur searchable public lists n ur website ENGINEERING NEW ZEALAND OFFERS DIFFERENT TYPES OF ASSESSMENT First time assessment If yu haven t applied fr assessment befre, yu ll need t cmplete a first time assessment fr the CPEng register r as a Chartered Member. There s a single assessment prcess fr cmpetence-based membership and registratin applicatins, s yu can chse t be assessed fr CPEng and Chartered Membership at the same time. If yu already have verseas registratin and/r memberships with ne f ur recgnised internatinal partners, yur verseas recgnitin may be taken int accunt as part f the Engineering New Zealand assessment prcess. Find ut mre abut wrking in New Zealand Knwledge Assessment Yu can becme registered even if yu dn t hld a recgnised qualificatin by cmpleting a Knwledge Assessment. Yu ll need t shw yu have a level f technical knwledge and understanding gained thrugh yur wrk and learning that is equivalent t an Accrd-accredited engineering qualificatin. 7 UNDERSTANDING THE ASSESSMENT PROCESS If yu re taking a first time assessment, r being reassessed fr CPEng, yu ll cmplete all five stages f the prcess. STAGE 1 PREPARATION G t My Membership n the Engineering New Zealand website t dcument yur wrk and learning experiences and prepare yur assessment applicatin. Make sure yu prvide evidence that demnstrates yu have the minimum standard f cmpetence in yur Practice Area. Yur evidence shuld include: an engineering qualificatin r equivalent knwledge fur t six Wrk Recrds Learning Recrds (apprximately 40 hurs CPD per year frm the last six years) tw referees yur Practice Field(s) and a descriptin f yur Practice Area a self-review demnstrating yur cmpetence against the cmpetence standard. 8 STAGE 2 VALIDATION When yur applicatin is ready, submit it fr validatin. We ll allcate yu a Cmpetence Assessment Advisr wh ll lk after yur applicatin frm start t finish. Yur advisr will check the infrmatin yu ve prvided and will aim t give yu feedback within 10 wrking days. They ll let yu knw if yu need t make any changes befre submitting yur applicatin. If yu d need t make changes, try t get them dne as sn as pssible and then resubmit fr validatin. Once we ve validated it, yu ll be able t submit yur applicatin. When yu submit yur applicatin, yu ll make an ethical declaratin and pay yur first time assessment fee STAGE 3 EVALUATION Yur advisr will rganise yur assessment panel, which will usually include a Lead Assessr and a Practice Area Assessr. Yur Lead Assessr will be yur main pint f cntact. They re respnsible fr scheduling an interactive assessment. Fr first time assessments, yur interactive assessment will be held face-t-face. Think f it as a prfessinal cnversatin. If yu re being reassessed, yu ll nrmally have yur interactive assessment via vide chat r ver the phne. Yur Practice Area Assessr will be the technical expert n yur panel. They ll have knwledge in an area f engineering relevant t yur practice field/area. The panel will use the evidence yu submit and the infrmatin frm yur interactive assessment t evaluate yur submissin. They might set a written assignment r ask yu fr additinal infrmatin. STAGE 4 RECOMMENDATION Once they ve gt all the infrmatin they need, the panel will make a recmmendatin t the Cmpetency Assessment Bard (CAB) abut whether t apprve yur applicatin. Yur Lead Assessr will let yu knw their recmmendatin. The CAB will cnsider the panel s recmmendatin and make a decisin n yur applicatin at their mnthly meeting. Occasinally the CAB asks fr additinal infrmatin. Yur advisr will let yu knw if that happens. STAGE 5 DECISION Yur advisr will let yu knw the utcme f yur applicatin. If successful, yur name will appear n the nline register r membership search. If yur applicatin is unsuccessful r the CAB made an alternative decisin, yu can respnd. 9 STARTING YOUR ASSESSMENT GETTING STARTED There are tw stages t building yur applicatin: creating yur Wrk and Learning Recrds and cmpleting an assessment applicatin in My Membership n ur website. If yu re an Engineering New Zealand member, yu already have access. If yu re nt a member, yu can ask fr temprary access fr six mnths. Or why nt jin us as a member? There are tw sectins yu ll need t use in My Membership. My Experience is where yu recrd yur qualificatins, build a recrd f yur wrk histry (Wrk Recrds) and keep track f yur learning activities (Learning Recrds). Assessments is where yu create and submit yur applicatin fr Chartered Membership and/r CPEng Registratin. HINTS AND TIPS Write in the first persn, eg I r me. Keep yur Wrk Recrds and Learning Recrds up t date t make it quicker and easier t cmplete yur applicatin. Spend sme time getting t knw the Assessment Criteria befre yu start cmpleting yur applicatin. 10 CREATING WORK AND LEARNING RECORDS Develping yur engineering knwledge and skills thrughut yur career is a key part f gaining and keeping prfessinal recgnitin. Track yur prgress thrugh the Wrk and Learning Recrds n ur website. Getting int the habit f recrding yur wrk and learning activities as yu g will make it easier t assess yur cmpetence. QUALIFICATIONS Add yur qualificatin details int the My Experience sectin befre starting yur applicatin fr assessment. If yur qualificatin isn t recgnised under the relevant internatinal Accrd, prvide cpies f yur academic transcript with infrmatin n each qualificatin at a curse level. Make sure yu have cpies f yur verified qualificatins validated by the Membership Team befre yu submit yur applicatin. Once yur qualificatins have been validated, the Membership Team will set yur Accrd status. If it s nt recgnised, get in tuch with the Cmpetence Assessment Team, wh ll cnfirm if yu need t take a Knwledge Assessment befre starting an assessment. WORK RECORDS Use yur Wrk Recrds t capture infrmatin abut yur engineering wrk. We use these recrds as evidence f yur practical applicatin f engineering knwledge and skills fr yur first time assessment r yur reassessment. Yu can t cmplete yur assessment withut these recrds, as they ll be yur evidence t shw yu meet a particular cmpetency. Include details abut specific prjects r activities yu ve wrked n, including yur persnal rle r respnsibilities. Attach a cuple f files as sample evidence t supprt yur Wrk Recrd. Yur sample evidence culd include: designs, schematics and drawings calculatins tendering dcuments, prject plans r reprts cmmunicatins letters/ s, ntes, reviews, recrds f meetings r site visits, phts, mre detailed prject/activity write up etc. Aim t write tw t three paragraphs fr each Wrk Recrd. This shuld be enugh t utline the wrk and explain yur invlvement. LEARNING RECORDS Yur up-t-date Learning Recrds will shw yur cmmitment t prfessinal develpment. Create Learning Recrds that utline the new knwledge and skills yu develped and the learning utcmes yu gained. Aim fr a range f learning activities that shw the breadth and depth f yur prfessinal develpment. Yur Learning Recrds shuld include: the recrd name activity type, eg private reading/research, shrt curses/wrkshps, frmal educatin and n-the-jb training, technical meetings, etc when yu cmpleted the activity a brief descriptin f what yu did and what yu learnt infrmatin abut hw yu applied yur new knwledge r hw it changed the way yu wrk hw lng yu spent n the activity wh ran the activity ENGINEERING NEW ZEALAND :: ASSESSMENT GUIDANCE OCTOBER 2017 PAGE 10 OF 30

One paragraph shuld be enugh t prvide a brief utline f each learning activity. The maximum file size fr supprting dcuments is 20MB per file. 13 COMPETENCE STANDARDS FOR CHARTERED MEMBERSHIP AND CPENG When yu re applying fr Chartered Membership and/r CPEng, the infrmatin yu supply in yur Wrk and Learning Recrds will be assessed against criteria within fur cmpetence grupings. Yu need t demnstrate yu can carry ut engineering wrk at a particular level f cmplexity. This is different depending n whether yu re applying fr CPEng r ne f ur Chartered Memberships. 16 ASSESSMENT CRITERIA FOR FIRST TIME ASSESSMENT STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS If yu re a structural engineer, this additinal guidance will help yu cmplete an applicatin fr first time assessment. Use it alngside the infrmatin n page 12 Cmpetence standards fr Chartered Membership and CPEng. Yu ll need t prvide evidence specific t yur structural engineering activities fr the fur cmpetence grupings in yur first time assessment applicatin. ENGINEERING KNOWLEDGE Shw yu understand and apply accepted principles underpinning widely-applied gd practice fr cmplex engineering. Learn mre abut hw we define cmplexity Summarise yur specialised knwledge f the behaviur f structures. Attach tw Wrk Recrds and link tw r three relevant evidence sample files t these recrds, such as free bdy diagrams, engineering sketches (with apprpriate anntatin) and design features reprts. Make sure yur evidence shws yu can apply fundamental structural engineering principles and include clear, lgical, handwritten calculatins anther engineer can easily fllw. If yu re supplying slutins prduced using sftware such as MathCAD, make sure they re supprted by evidence f yur understanding and applicatin f the structural engineering mdels underpinning the sftware used. In the Sample Evidence bx, summarise hw these Wrk Recrds shw yu can: assess structural actins in typical beam and clumn structures, bridge structures, wall structures r in slabs, and when these are subjected t gravity and lateral lads, with and withut using a cmputer.
