This high performace full plaar techology device is able to cotrol a 0.8 A load. The ACS switch embeds a high voltage clampig structure to absorb the iductive tur-off eergy ad a gate level shifter driver to separate the digital cotroller from the mai switch. 3 AC LINE SWITCH BASIC APPLICATION The ACS108 device is well adapted to washig machie, dishwasher, tumble drier, refrigerator, water heater ad cookware. It has bee desiged especially to switch ON ad OFF low power loads such as soleoid, valve, relay, micro-motor, fa, pump, door lock ad low wattage lamp bulb. Pi : Commo drive referece to coect to the power lie eutral Pi : Switch ate iput to coect to the digital cotroller Pi : Switch Output to coect to the Load The ACS switch is triggered with a egative gate curret flowig out of the gate pi. It ca be drive directly by the digital cotroller through a resistor as show o the typical applicatio diagram. Note that o protectio device (zeer or capacitor) should be added betwee gates ad commo termials. The SOT223 versio allows several ACS108 devices to be coected o the same coolig PCB pad which is the pi : this coolig pad ca be the reduced, ad the prited circuit layout is simplified. I appliaces systems, the ACS108 switch iteds to drive low power load i full cycle ON / OFF mode. Whe the gate sigal is removed, the load is switched off after a delay time that is equal to oe half lie cycle or oe full lie cycle depedig o the load drive strategy. The tur off commutatio characteristics of these loads ca be classified i 3 groups as show i table 1. Thaks to its thermal ad tur off commutatio performaces, the ACS108 switch is able to drive with o additioal tur off subber, a resistive or iductive load up to 0.2 A (whe this load has to switch off withi oe half AC lie cycle), a iductive load up to 0.6 A or a resistive load up to 0.8 A (whe this load has to switch off withi oe full AC lie cycle). 4 INUCTIVE SWITCH-OFF OPERATION At the ed of the last coductio half-cycle, the load curret reaches the holdig curret level I H, ad the ACS switch turs off. Because of the iductace L of the load, the curret flows through the avalache diode ad decreases liearly to zero. urig this time, the voltage across the switch is limited to the clampig voltage V CL. The eergy stored i the iductace of the load depeds o the holdig curret I H ad the iductace (up to 10 H); it ca reach about 20 mj ad is dissipated i the clampig sectio that is especially desiged for that purpose. The test circuit of the figure 4 is represetative of the fial ACS applicatio ad is also used to stress the ACS switch accordig to the IEC stadard coditios. Thaks to the load, the ACS switch sustais the voltage spikes up to 2 kv above the peak lie voltage. It will break over safely eve o resistive load where the tur o curret rise is high as show o figure 4. Such o repetitive test ca be doe 10 times o each AC lie voltage polarity.
