6 Frequently Asked Questins abut Prgrammable Attenuatrs... What are the applicatins f Aerflex / Weinschel prgrammable attenuatrs? Aerflex / Weinschel's prgrammable attenuatrs are used t cntrl the pwer f radi frequency and micrwave signals. Applicatins include cntrl f input pwer t signal measuring systems, cntrl f utput pwer frm signal generating systems, adjustment pwer fr BIT errr rate testing, cntrlling lsses in a signal path and simulating the signal fading f a micrwave cmmunicatin system...t name just a few. Hw d they wrk? Aerflex / Weinschel's prgrammable attenuatrs cnsist f a series f attenuatin pads (cells) that are selectively inserted int the signal path via a cntrl signal. An example is a series f cells such as 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 db arranged in a binary sequence. Such an attenuatr is called a binary attenuatr. Cmbinatins f cells are switched "n" t prvide attenuatin steps frm 0 db t 31 db. Anther example is a unit having cell values f 10, 20 and 40 db which will prvide 10 db steps between 0 db and 70 db. Hw are the attenuatrs switched? The basic structure f a prgrammable attenuatr is shwn belw. There are several ways the attenuatr pads are switched in and ut f the RF path. Aerflex / Weinschel's 3200 series uses TO-5 can relay switches. These are useful up t 2.0 GHz and higher. Aerflex / Weinschel's 150 series perate up t 26.5 GHz and utilize reed switches hused within a precisin machined cavity. Aerflex / Weinschel als manufactures prgrammable attenuatrs using slid state switching that ffers faster switching speeds but their frequency range is mre limited than mechanical step attenuatrs. Whereas mechanically switched attenuatrs perate frm DC t their maximum frequency, slid state attenuatrs have a lwer frequency limit. Slid state attenuatrs als have lwer islatin between cntrl and thrugh path. Hw fast d the attenuatrs switch? Switching speed f mechanically switched attenuatrs is typically between 6 and 35 msec. This is the maximum time between the applicatin f the switching cmmand t the cell and the cessatin f cntact bunce. This time is a functin f switch structure and size. What is a latching and nn-latching attenuatr? Nn-latching is als called mmentary r fail-safe. Fr the nn-latching type, the attenuatr is switched t the attenuatin "n" psitin nly s lng as cntrl pwer is applied t the switch. As sn as pwer is remved the switch reverts t it passive state r fail-safe state...usually the zer db state. In latching attenuatrs each cell stays in the last setting even if pwer is remved. Latching attenuatrs have tw cntrl lines. One cntrl line causes the attenuatr t switch t the "attenuatin n" setting while the ther cntrl line causes the attenuatr t switch t the zer db setting. There is nrmally a permanent magnet that hlds the switch stable in either psitin. Each versin has its advantages and disadvantages. The nn-latching switch requires cnstant pwer t the slenid when in the "n" psitin. On the ther hand the latching versin requires greater switch current t vercme it's permanent magnet. Hw are the attenuatrs cntrlled? The Mdel 3200 and 3400 Series nn-latching attenuatrs require nly ne 12 vlt cntrl line per cell. The directin f cntrl current is nt imprtant. The Mdel 150 Series is a latching versin using ne psitive 5 vlt r 24 vlt cmmn return line and tw grunding cntrl lines. In rder fr switching t be guaranteed the vltage between cmmn and cntrl must be held within specified limits. Pwer supply regulatin must be kept within range even while heavy switching current is being drawn. Any cable vltage drps must be added t the minimum cntrl vltage t btain the required pwer supply vltage at the attenuatr. 7 What is the switch life f these prgrammable attenuatrs? Specified life fr mechanical switches is nrmally in the range f 1 t 10 millin switching. This specificatin is per switch, independent f the ther switches in the attenuatr. Fr the Mdel 150 series attenuatrs the specificatin is 5 millin cycles, i.e. ne cycle is the switch mving in bth directins. These specificatins are based n the mechanical life f the switch, hwever, ther factrs have an impact n attenuatr life. High pwer peratin can have an adverse effect n the switch cntact surfaces. This can reduce the verall life f the switch by causing the attenuatr perfrmance t g utside it's specificatin. What is mntnicity? A prgrammable step attenuatr is cnsidered mntnic if it's attenuatin always increases when it is cmmanded t increase. This applies n a per frequency basis. Fr instance the 20 db setting at 1 GHz will always be less than the 21 db setting at 1 GHz. This des nt necessarily mean that the 20 db setting at 1 GHz will always be less than the 21 db setting 18 GHz. Mntnicity is influenced by the SWR f the individual attenuatr cells as the cells are cmbined t frm an attenuatin value. It is als influenced by the summatin f individual cell attenuatin tlerances as the cells are cmbined. What is the difference between insertin lss and incremental attenuatin? Prgrammable attenuatrs have insertin lss and als incremental attenuatin. Insertin lss is the lss thrugh the attenuatr when all cells are switched t zer db. It is the residual lss f the device itself. Insertin lss usually increases with frequency reaching several db at the higher frequencies and generally has very flat frequency respnse. Incremental attenuatin is the attenuatin values f the attenuatrs cells relative t the insertin lss. Since insertin lss is always present, the perfrmance f a prgrammable attenuatr is always given as incremental attenuatin relative t insertin lss. Insertin lss is cnsidered part f the fixed perfrmance f the system path in which the prgrammable attenuatr is lcated. What is the advantages f Attenuatrs with built-in driver circuitry? These attenuatrs feature an internal micrcntrller-based driver that prvides a TTL-level digital interface fr cntrl f the attenuatr relays (Figure 1). This card simplifies peratin and interfacing requirements, while at the same time prviding fr greatly enhanced flexibility ver past designs. User-selectable mdes f peratin include bth parallel and serial bus. The parallel mde prvides a simple, ne-bit per relay n/ff cntrl with internal pullups fr use primarily in single attenuatr applicatins. This mde allws the attenuatr t be cntrlled via a variety f methds, such as a TTL-level digital utput prt, r mechanical tggle switches. The serial mde prvides a tw-wire serial bus structure and prtcl fr cnnecting a number f devices t a single hst cntrl interface, suitable fr use in larger system and sub-system applicatins. The built-in driver cntains nn-vlatile cnfiguratin memry that is used t hld a wide variety f attenuatr and driverdependent parameters, including serial number, attenuatr cell db values, relay cnfiguratins, and switching requirements, which are all accessible via the digital interface. This frees the system designer frm such lw-level details, allwing faster integratin. In either peratinal mde, the micrcntrller enters an idle cnditin during perids f inactivity, turning ff all n-bard clcks, reducing EMI cncerns, and lwering pwer cnsumptin. 8 Intermdulatin Distrtin in Prgrammable Attenuatrs... Weinschel has been a majr supplier f prgrammable attenuatrs t the RF industry fr ver 25 years. Histrically the mst demanding specificatins fr these cmpnents have been lw insertin lss and SWR, cmbined with a reasnable life expectancy f several millin switching cycles. This was usually adequate fr RF instruments like spectrum analyzers and signal generatrs, wherein the attenuatr bandwidth rather than the switching speed was f prime cncern. T achieve wide bandwidths the prgrammable attenuatrs were mstly f electrmechanical design and the linearity f these passive cmpnents was nt nly assumed but never questined by any custmer. Intermdulatin distrtin discussins and prblems were usually limited t cmpnents such as amplifiers, mixers and filters. In recent years, hwever, wireless cmmunicatin systems emplying cmplex digital mdulatin schemes, increased channel capacity, high transmit pwer and extremely lw receiver sensitivity have put int questin the linearity f passive cmpnents. Even very lw level multi-tne intermdulatin prducts generated by attenuatrs can seriusly degrade the efficiency f a system/ instrument if these prducts fall within the user passband. Fr tw clsely spaced tnes at frequencies f1 and f2, the third rder IM prducts at 2f1 - f2 and 2f2 - f1, are the mst harmful distrtin prducts. They are harmful because they are lcated clse t f1 and f2 and virtually impssible t filter ut. In tday's base statins the multicarrier pwer amplifier (MCPA) is replacing banks f single-channel amplifiers and their crrespnding pwer cmbining netwrk. MCPAs have the capability f carrying a number f mdulatin schemes simultaneusly and can als emply schemes such as dynamic-channel-allcatin (DCA) t use the allcated frequency spectrum mre efficiently. The in-band intermdulatin distrtin (IMD) perfrmance f these amplifiers is extremely critical and needs t be measured using lw distrtin prgrammable multi-tne generatrs whse IMD perfrmance must be quite superir. This is discussed in the tw case studies cited here. Electrmechanical prgrammable attenuatrs bviusly prvide a far superir IMD perfrmance than their crrespnding slid state cunterparts emplying semicnductr switching elements. Hwever, their slw switch speed, in the rder f millisecnds, and shrt switch life in the rder f 5-10 millin cycles make them unattractive in sme applicatins like cell phne testing and ther ATE systems. Slid State prgrammable attenuatrs d vercme these tw prblems and are therefre included here fr IMD perfrmance cmparisn. It is nt the intent f this brief article t g int the thery f intermdulatin distrtin. The gal here is t prvide sme gd basic IMD test data fr a variety f cmmercial prgrammable attenuatrs and let the end user select the mst apprpriate type fr his applicatin. Measurement System and Parameters... All test data presented here was generated using a cmmercially available Passive IM Analyzer, Summitek Mdel SI-800A which prvides a fully integrated system fr characterizing distrtin prduced by cables, attenuatrs and ther passive devices. Althugh the system is capable f measuring bth, thrugh and reflected IM3, IM5, IM7 and IM9, the fcus here is nly n thrugh IM fr the mst trublesme third rder prduct, IM3. T carry ut a meaningful cmparisn between different attenuatrs all measurements were carried ut using tw equal amplitude input tnes at 869 MHz (f1) and 891 MHz(f2), the IM3 frequency being 847 MHz (2f1-f2). Input carrier pwer was stepped in increments f 1 db frm -7dBm t +27dBm. All external adapters and cables were carefully selected t maintain the system's residual IM level f arund -120 dbm. Althugh the system permitted receiver measurements between -70 t -120 dbm we restricted all measurements between -85 t -110 dbm by using a calibrated lw IM cupler and attenuatrs at the utput prt f the DUT. One must be aware that the accuracy f such small signal measurements can easily be ff by 2 t 3 db s restricting the measurement dynamic range helps reduce the receiver nn-linearity errr. Measurements were dne ver several days t ensure stability and repeatability. Distrtin Cmparisn fr Basic Types f Prgrammable Attenuatrs... The prgrammable attenuatrs discussed here are the switched type with a discrete number f `cells'. Switching between the zer and attenuate state n each cell is achieved by a DPDT switch cnfiguratin. The cell values are usually in a binary sequence. Fr example a 6 cell/6 bit unit culd have 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 db sectins prviding a 63 db dynamic range in 1dB increments. Fur basic families f prgrammable attenuatrs are cmpared, each family being identified by the switch element used t achieve the transfer frm zer t attenuate state. Fr the purpses f distrtin cmparisn it was deemed necessary t select units with similar electrical length and/r prgrammability. Bth the electrmechanical units, TO5 relay and edge-line type, had an electrical length f abut 20 cms. The tw slid state units had 6 cell prgrammability yielding 63 db in 1 db step size. All IM3 vs Pin measurements were dne with the attenuatrs prgrammed t be in their characteristic zer insertin lss state. The zer state was selected because it generated the highest IM3 levels. 9 bvius cmprmise in IMD perfrmance fr the tw slid state types. It is wrth nting that the IM3 vs Pin slpe is nt exactly 3:1 as wuld be the case in a perfect third rder device. The theretical tw tne third rder intercept pint, IP3, cmmnly used as a figure f merit fr cmparing linearity is shwn in the fllwing table at tw different input pwer levels. The input IP3 is derived frm the fllwing relatin: Input IP3 = 3(Pin-α)-IM3 + α 2 where α = zer insertin lss f each 847 MHz, the IM3 frequency. IM3 and Pin are selected frm Table 1. TABLE 1. 10 Case Study 1 Cmpany A ffers its IMD series Phase Aligned 8 tne generatrs t test intermdulatin distrtin in multi-carrier pwer amplifiers. The utput level f these generatrs is accurately cntrlled using a Weinschel TO5 relay based prgrammable attenuatr ffering ver 60 db dynamic range. Eight +13 dbm carriers are input t the attenuatr. In MCPAs with feedfrward crrectin, in-band IMD levels culd be as lw as -75 dbc s Cmpany A wanted at least -85 dbc at the utput f their generatr. The first prblem was that Weinschel culd nt simulate the exact test cnditins. This was readily reslved by establishing a gd c-relatin between ur tw tne IM3 measurement and Cmpany A's 8 tne test. Having emplyed the best plating techniques and using gd lw IM cnnectr design the attenuatr was still shrt f the required IMD spec. The final imprvement was achieved by extensive testing n relays frm three different manufacturers. Figure 2 shws IM3 plts f the tw best perfrmers. Manufacturer B cnsistently prvided a 4 t 5 db imprvement at the tw tne level at Pin f +22 dbm and higher. This crrespnded t an acceptable utput distrtin level fr the Cmpany A generatr. IM3 (dbm) Case Study 2 Input Pwer vs. Thrugh IM3 Level Case Study 1 Passive IM3 Measurement Weinschel withto5 relays frm tw different manufacturers Lw Carrier Frequency: MHz High Carrier Frequency: MHz IM3 Frequency: MHz Manufacturer A Manufacturer B Input Pwer, P in (dbm) each tne Cmpany B manufactures ultra lw distrtin multi-tne signal generatrs. Their units ffer up t 160 channels frm 5 MHz thrugh 1 GHz. Each carrier can be leveled as high as +10 dbm. One f their mst stringent requirements is a crss mdulatin test. The Cmpany B generatr specificatin is -100 db belw the sideband f a 100% amplitude mdulated carrier, which is -110 dbc. The actual cmpnents used in the critical path had t measure -120 dbc r better. Their generatr needed an ultra linear attenuatr t prvide a prgrammed utput level in 0.5 db increments. Relay based units were tested and fund t be unacceptable. The high perfrmance edge-line attenuatrs were expected t slve the prblem but at first they t fell shrt, but mainly in their zer attenuatin state, which generates maximum distrtin. Prir t supplying these units t Cmpany B n custmer had asked fr a distrtin specificatin n these suppsedly passive attenuatrs. Envirnmental perfrmance had warranted the use f nickel underplate n the edge lines. This was disclsed t the custmer and suspected t be the prime cause f high IMD levels. Since the unit was ging t be munted in a benign envirnment, eliminatin f the nickel underplate was nt thught t be a prblem. Figure 3 demnstrates the tremendus reductin in IM3 levels upn eliminatin f the nickel underplate-a significant 40 db! A further db imprvement was achieved by redesigning the cnnectrs t reduce their passive IMD. The IM imprvement in these cnnectrs wuld have served n purpse prir t the eliminatin f nickel. This is because the main surce f distrtin lay behind the cnnectr back plane, alng the edge transmissin line, which had a far greater electrical length than the tw cnnectrs.
