Hi-Rel units can be laser-marked and are manufactured frm materials which have a TML f less than 1% and CVCM less than 0.1%. What is a bidirectinal and unidirectinal attenuatr? All Aerflex / Weinschel attenuatrs are bidirectinal unless they are specified as unidirectinal in the pwer rating specificatin. Bidirectinal means the maximum specified pwer can be applied t either the input r utput f the attenuatr. Unidirectinal means the maximum specified pwer can nly be applied t the input prt f the attenuatr. Unidirectinal designs allw fr smaller verall package sizes and reduced csts. All ur attenuatrs have maximum average and peak pulse input pwer limits. The average pwer limit decreases linearly as the ambient temperature increases. If these limits are exceeded, burnut f the attenuatr element results r its calibratin may be permanently changed. Yes Aerflex / Weinschel has recently intrduced new as well as updated mdels specifically fr applicatins requiring lw intermdulatin distrtin. Mdels are available with the lw IM ptins are...24, 33, 40, 45, 46, 47, 48, 48, 53, 57, & 58. Refer t the page 15 fr a prduct line verview r the specific data sheet fr IM3 details. Hw is the temperature r pwer cefficient specificatin applied? These specificatins tell hw much the attenuatin will change when the ambient temperature r input pwer changes. First multiply the catalg temperature cefficient r pwer cefficient by the ambient temperature range r input pwer range t which the attenuatr will be expsed. Then multiply that number by the db value f the attenuatr. The result is the maximum change in attenuatin than can be expected ver the ambient temperature range r pwer range that was specified. Hw is the attenuatr pwer rating calculated? An attenuatr will handle specified pwer at ambient temperatures as specified in the catalg. N special fan cling is required. At higher temperatures the pwer rating is calculated by using catalg specificatins and a straight line graph (Example shwn abve). Fr instance the pwer rating f the Mdel 48 attenuatr is 100 watts t 25 C and 10 watts at 125 C. Using linear graph paper, plt a straight line between these tw pints. This plt shws that the pwer rating at 75 C is apprximately 56 Watts. 30 db attenuatin values. Each attenuatr is tested in 1 GHz intervals t minimize interplatin errr. The attenuatr sets are available in stainless steel type N (Mdel 1 & 44), and 3.5mm (Mdel 56) cnnectrs. Custm sets with ther cnnectr type and higher pwer sets are als available upn request. Refer t page 66 fr mre details. What is Third-Order Intermdulatin Distrtin? (IM3) Intermdulatin distrtin (IM) cnsists f the spurius signals which result frm the mixing f nth rder frequencies in the nn-linear elements f a cmpnent. Third rder intermdulatin distrtin is f particular interest because third rder prducts typically represent the highest level distrtin appearing clse t the desired signal, and as such the highest level nn-filterable distrtin. Third rder IM level (IM3) is tested by injecting tw pure tnes f equal magnitude (f1 and f2) int the cmpnent t be tested. The third rder IM prducts will appear in the utput spectrum at the frequencies 2f1-f2 and 2f2-f1. These prducts are characterized by defining their level (in dbc) relative t the fundamental utput tnes at either f1 r f2. Applicatins... 10 Fixed Caxial Attenuatrs Understanding Temperature & Pwer Cefficient in Attenuatrs By the Cmpnents Engineering Aerflex / Weinschel Article written By Jimmy Dhl, VP Engineering & Rb Sinn, Design Engineer Temperature Cefficient f Resistance, TCR, is a well-knwn parameter in the Electrnics Industry. Pwer Cefficient f Resistance, PCR, is nt such a familiar term. Manufacturers seldm prvide PCR specificatins fr their resistrs. TCR and PCR are usually expressed in parts per millin per degree (ppm / C), r parts per millin per watt (ppm / W). Applying PCR in an example, a 10-Watt, 100-hm resistr with a PCR f +/- 200ppm/W culd change by +/- 0.2 hms when subjected t 10 Watts f average pwer at ambient temperature (100Ωx10Wx200x10 6 /W). Attenuatrs in their discrete frm are usually a cmbinatin f chip resistrs in a Pi r T netwrk, and the type f resistrs selected fr such netwrks depends n the desired frequency, temperature and pwer handling requirements. The individual chips in such a netwrk might either be thin- r thick-film resistrs. Fr higher frequency applicatins, attenuatrs usually take n a distributed frm, with a resistive sheet f thick-film r thin-film terminated with suitable metalizatin, Figure 1. The mst cmmn material fr thick-film resistrs is ruthenium dixide. Ppular thin film materials are nichrme, tantalum nitride and tin xide. Case 1: TCA f Fixed Attenuatrs All f Weinschel s fixed attenuatrs are f the distributed type and f a prprietary thin-film Tin Oxide cmpsitin. The tin xide is depsited n a ceramic substrate at 930 C via a chemical vapr depsitin prcess and terminated with gld metalizatin. Depending n the prduct type, the substrate culd be Alumina, BeO r ALN. The vast fixed attenuatr family cvers a frequency range f DC t 40 GHz, and the pwer handling ranges frm as lw as 2 watts t 1000 watts. The TCA fr every fixed prduct is specified as dB/dB/ C because the predminant factr determining the TCA is the TCR f the tin xide film. The substrate material, the sheet resistivity and the mechanical cntacts between the cnnectrs and the substrate and between the substrate and the grunds d cntribute t the verall TCA, but t a much lesser extent. The TCA is usually measured at a pwer level lw enugh s as nt t cause any significant warming f the unit. Attenuatin is measured at varius ambient temperatures ver a specified frequency range. The wrst-case cefficient arrived at is based n the maximum attenuatin change ver the frequency band. Military Standard, MIL-A-3993 fr fixed attenuatrs calls fr a TCA f dB/dB/ C. Over a 100 C ambient temperature change, a 30 db attenuatr wuld change by a maximum f 1.2 db at lw signal levels. In reality, the TCA f Weinschel attenuatrs is dB/dB/ C. The maximum change wuld nly be 0.3 db n a 30 db attenuatr, thus prviding a significant guard band t the user. Figure 2 is a theretical plt shwing the attenuatin variatin n a 10 db distributed attenuatr as a functin f the TCR f the resistive thin-film at tw temperature extremes, -75ºC and +125ºC. It is interesting t nte that the change in attenuatin is rather small ver such a wide swing f bth temperature and TCR. Figure 3 is a similar plt f the impedance variatin f the same attenuatr and this shws a significant change frm the nminal 50-hm impedance. Three bvius cnclusins can be drawn frm these plts: As lng as the shunt and series resistive elements f an attenuatr have the same TCR the attenuatin will always increase at DC, independent f the temperature and the magnitude f the TCR. Distributed film attenuatrs will always behave in this manner because the shunt and series sectins are frmed frm the same resistive film and therefre have the same TCR. Discrete attenuatr netwrks may nt behave in this Figure 1. Almst all the fixed and prgrammable attenuatrs ffered by Weinschel specify a Temperature Cefficient f Attenuatin (TCA) and a Pwer Cefficient f Attenuatin (PCA) in the prduct data sheets. Based n the inquiries we receive abut the interpretatin f these specificatins, it seems that sme basic explanatin is necessary s the end user can crrectly frecast the wrst case scenari fr his system; i.e. what attenuatin change might be expected at temperature and pwer extremes. Since an increase in the resistance f the series element increases the attenuatin and an increase in the resistance f the shunt element reduces the attenuatin the verall change in the attenuatin is very small and far less than the change in the individual resistrs. Materials with pr TCR figures will seriusly impact the impedance f distributed attenuatrs and significantly degrade the, with little effect n the DC attenuatin. Thugh the specified TCA f all attenuatrs is the same, the PCA varies acrss the prduct line since it is n lnger just a functin f the tin xide resistive film. It als depends n the substrate material, metalizatin, packaging, heat sinking and frced cling, if any. The effect f high pwer/high vltage n this resistive film is quite different frm that f a temperature increase at lw vltages/lw pwer. A detailed discussin f this is beynd the scpe f this article but it is imprtant t nte that this effect is a functin f the electrical stress in the film and will depend n the dimensins f the resistive film, and s is a functin f the size and shape f the resistr. Als, it is wrth clarifying that referring t this high vltage effect as a Pwer Cefficient is misleading since the rate f change f resistance with applied vltage is nt cnstant and the film exhibits sme degree, albeit small, f nn-linearity. Frm the Weinschel fixed attenuatr prduct line, a typical 2 W attenuatr has a PCA f < db/db/w, s a 30 db unit wuld change by less than 0.3 db ( acrss the full frequency band, when the incident pwer increases frm, say, 10mW t 2 Watts. Similarly, a 500W unit with a PCA f dB/dB/W wuld change by less than 1.5dB ( ver its perating frequency band when the incident pwer increases frm a lw level signal t the full 500 watts. PCA measurements are nt easily made. Just as the TCA is measured at a cnstant lw pwer level with varying ambient temperatures, the PCA must be measured at a cnstant ambient temperature f 25 C with varying pwer and ver the entire perating frequency range. T carry ut such measurements with gd accuracy requires a set f high-pwer, bradband bias tees and gd matching techniques. The test set-up is shwn in the MIL- A-3933 dcument. Case 3: TCA f switched Prgrammable Attenuatrs Switched Prgrammable attenuatrs typically cmprise several attenuatr cells, usually in a binary sequence: 1 db, 2 db, 4 db, 8 db, 16 db, 32 db etc, Fig 4. These cells are selectively switched ON frm their `zer state, using DPDT relays fr electrmechanical mdels and PIN dides, fr slid state versins. Prgrammable attenuatrs basically have tw states, a zer state when the unit is sitting in its minimum insertin lss psitin and an attenuate state when the unit is sitting in any f the selected attenuatin psitins. The interpretatin f TCA fr these prducts has at times raised questins because there are tw TCA figures assciated with them. The first is the Abslute TCA, which is derived frm the ttal change in any selected attenuatin, between tw temperatures at lw signal levels. The secnd is the relative r Incremental TCA. Prgrammable attenuatrs are frequently installed in systems and instruments t accurately cntrl RF signal levels. Their insertin lss in the ZERO attenuatin psitin usually becmes part f the verall system lss and is zered ut in the nrmalizatin prcess. What is imprtant in such cases is the accuracy f the incremental attenuatin with reference t the nrmalized state and, therefre, it is the Incremental TCA that is mre relevant t the designer/user. Incremental TCA is derived frm the change in the incremental attenuatin state at tw temperatures; i.e., the nrmalizatin f the zer is carried ut at bth temperatures. The blue plt in Figure 4 shws the change in the zer state attenuatin f an 8 cell electrmechanical unit. It was generated by first nrmalizing its zer state lss at rm temperature and then raising the ambient t 100 C. The majr attenuatin change ver temperature cmes frm the 8 relays. Typically a 75-degree change causes a 0.5 db change in the Zer insertin lss (0.063 db per relay). Fr this unit, if nrmalizatin were carried ut at 25 C, the 1 db cell switched ON and the ambient raised t 100 C, the 1 db cell wuld read 1.5 db at arund 1.5 GHz. This wuld yield the wrst-case Abslute TCA f db/db/ C (0.5dB /1dB/75 C). As a cmparisn, the red plt in Figure 4 shws that the Incremental attenuatin change f the 32 db is nly 0.05 db at abut 2 GHz because we measure it at 25 C with ne nrmalizatin and again at 100 C with anther nrmalizatin. S all changes due t the relays are masked and the wrst-case Incremental TCA wrks ut t be db/db/ C (0.05dB/32dB/75 C). This shws that the ruthenium based thick-film attenuatrs screened n a ceramic substrate hardly change ver this temperature range.
