4 Welcome to COMAND! Please make yourself famlar wth your COMAND control unt and read the nstructons n ths manual before operatng the COMAND system. Ths wll help you derve a greater beneft from the system. Please also follow the nstructons and warnngs contaned n ths manual. Ignorng them could result n damage to the vehcle or personal njury to you or others. The astersk* dentfes optonal equpment. Dependng on model, verson and confguraton, your COMAND system equpment may dffer. Therefore, you may fnd explanatons for optonal equpment not nstalled n your vehcle. If you have any questons about the operaton of any equpment, your authorzed Mercedes- Benz Center wll be glad to demonstrate the proper procedures. 11 Introducton Symbols Symbols You wll fnd the followng symbols n these operatng nstructons: * The astersk dentfes optonal equpment. Snce not all models have the same standard equpment, your COMAND system equpment may devate from some descrptons and llustratons. Warnng G Warnng notces draw your attenton to hazards that may endanger your health or lfe, or the health or lfe of others.! Hghlghts hazards that may result n damage to your COMAND. Helpful hnts or further nformaton you may fnd useful. Ths symbol ponts to nstructons for you to follow. A number of these symbols appearng n successon ndcates a multple-step procedure. The contnuaton symbol marks an nterrupted procedure whch wll be contnued on the next page. 12 Operatng safety Warnng G Any alteratons made to electronc components and the software can cause malfunctons. The rado, amplfer, CD changer, navgaton module, satellte rado*, telephone* and Voce control system* are nterconnected. Therefore, when one of the components s not operatonal or has not been removed/ replaced properly, the functon of other components may be mpared. Ths condton mght serously mpar the operatng safety of your vehcle. We recommend that you have any servce work on electronc components carred out only by qualfed personnel. Warnng G In order to avod dstracton whch could lead to an accdent, the drver should enter system settngs wth the vehcle at a standstll and operate the system only when road and traffc condtons permt. Bear n mnd that at a speed of just 30 mph (approxmately 50 km/h), your car s coverng a dstance of 50 feet (approxmately 14 m) every second. COMAND supples you wth nformaton to help you select your route more easly and gude you convenently and safely to your destnaton. For safety reasons, we encourage the drver to stop the vehcle n a safe place before answerng or placng a call, or consultng the COMAND screen to read navgatonal maps, nstructons, or downloaded nformaton. Introducton Operatng safety Whle the navgaton system provdes drectonal assstance, the drver must reman focused on safe drvng behavor, ncludng attenton to traffc and street sgns, and should utlze the system s audo cues whle drvng. The navgaton system does not supply any nformaton on stop sgns, yeld sgns, traffc regulatons or traffc safety rules. Ths always remans your personal responsblty when you drve. CD maps do not cover all areas nor all routes wthn an area. 3

For symbol and map dsplays n navgaton: The symbol bar appears on the left hand sde of the dsplay and shows dfferent symbols. Pop-up screen messages Battery voltage gets low You can stll operate COMAND wthout the engne runnng.! To prevent the car battery from runnng down, you wll be recevng two messages askng you to start the engne when battery power gets low. You wll see the message Cauton. Please start engne. Otherwse COMAND wll shut down n 3 mnutes. Start the engne. You wll see the message Cauton. Please start engne. Otherwse COMAND wll shut down n 10 seconds. Start the engne. You wll see the message Cauton. COMAND wll shut down now. If you do not start the engne, you can contnue usng COMAND untl the next message appears. Start the engne. Transmttng an emergency call va Tele Ad* Refer to the vehcle operatng nstructons for nformaton regardng the operaton of the Tele Ad emergency call system and on how to transmt an emergency call. You wll see the message Tele Ad actve. Press the rght-hand rotary/pushbutton v to remove the wndow. COMAND wll mute an audo source or one of the two servce sources Voce output n navgaton or Voce control system*. 10

You should read ths secton wth partcular care f you are operatng COMAND for the frst tme. For detaled nformaton, please refer to the pages ndcated and the respectve system chapters. Swtchng the COMAND control unt on and off Swtchng on P COMAND swtches on the last actve system and dsplays the correspondng menu. P Press #. The Mercedes logo and the letterng Mercedes-Benz wll appear. The dsplay then changes and an alert box wll appear. 12

Track select Press the rocker swtch g/h. You wll hear the prevous or next track. If more than 9 seconds of playng tme have elapsed, the CD changes back to the start of the current track. Selectng a CD Press one of the number keys Key 0 select the CD drve Keys 1-6 select the correspondng magazne slot of the CD changer The message Loadng CD... appears on the dsplay. Playback then wll begn wth track 1. 15

The satellte rado wll tune n the prevous or next recevable staton n the selected category n alphabetcal order. Manual category scan Press g or h on the rocker swtch longer than 2 seconds. You wll hear a confrmaton beep when the functon s actve. Repeatedly press g or h agan wthn 5 seconds untl the desred category appears. Prevous category Press g. Next category Press h. 16

If entered code s correct and the phone s regstered n a network, the phone s ready for use. Outgong call Enter a telephone number Use the number keys 1 through 0 to enter the telephone number. The menu changes when the frst dgt s entered. 17

If the phone number together wth a name s stored n the phone book, the name appears on the screen. Conductng a call When the call s answered, the call tme appears n the screen. Endng a call Press the rght-hand rotary/push-button v to confrm the End button. Swtchng another system on Press any system key, e.g. b. COMAND swtches to the navgaton system. You wll fnd more nformaton n chapter Telephone ( page 96). Enterng a destnaton and calculatng a route Swtchng the navgaton system on Man destnaton nput menu P Press b. If the navgaton system has not been booted up, the message Navgaton beng actvated. Please obey all traffc rules wll appear. The navgaton menu dsplayed wll vary accordng to the last navgaton functon used ( page 13). If route gudance was swtched off, the man destnaton nput menu wll be dsplayed. 18

Correctng entry Last character Press r brefly. Complete entry Press r longer than 2 seconds. Actvatng the cty lst Press the rght-hand rotary/pushbutton v longer than 2 seconds untl the cty lst appears. 19

If several optons of a cty/suburb are avalable, another menu wll appear where you must make and confrm your desred selecton. Press the rght-hand rotary/pushbutton v to confrm Street. The nput menu Street Entry wll appear. The further sequence corresponds to the Enterng a cty secton. P Now enter the street and actvate the street lst. Then confrm the street n ths lst. You have now selected the destnaton and can calculate the route. Press the rght-hand rotary/pushbutton v to confrm OK. The Route Mode selecton menu wll appear. 20

The dsplay changes n ths order: Day dsplay Nght dsplay Screen off Day dsplay It s also possble to carry out the change between day and nght dsplay automatcally va the ambent lght sensor ( page 216). You can swtch dfferent beeps on and off. Selectng beeps Acknowledgement beep Beeps when you accept an entry or enter a destnaton on the map Info beep Beeps when you see the messages announcng a drop of battery voltage ( page 10) Alarm beep Beeps f the devce has a serous malfuncton or f you are lstenng to an emergency broadcast on the rado. The staton last tuned to wll begn to play. 3 2 P Mutng You can operate the telephone and the navgaton system whle the rado s on. Press Ö whle lstenng to the rado. The symbol R wll appear n the symbol bar. Press Ö agan to resume lstenng to the current staton. The symbol R wll have dsappeared. Mutng wll also be canceled f you swtch to a dfferent audo source, e.g. CD, or f you alter the volume. Swtchng another system on Press any system key, e.g. d. COMAND wll swtch to CD mode. 28

38 Audo Rado operaton Changng the Rado band You can select between FM-, AM- and WB- Band. AM Band Frequency band FM AM Weather Band WB Frequency range FM AM If a weather band staton cannot be receved on ths channel, an automatc search run of all 7 channels wll take place. As soon as a weather band staton s receved, the search stops and the channel appears n the dsplay. The automatc search wll perform two cycles through the 7 channels. Message No WB A weather band staton cannot be receved on any of the 7 channels. Swtchng back to FM band Press c. P Press c untl AM s dsplayed n the upper left hand corner of the dsplay. The AM staton last tuned to wll begn to play. The frequency wll appear n the dsplay. P In the AM or FM man rado menu, turn the rght-hand rotary/push-button v to hghlght WB and press to confrm. 53 Audo CD operaton General nformaton on CD operaton Warnng G The CD drve and CD changer are Class 1 laser products. There s a danger of nvsble laser radaton when you open or damage the cover. Do not remove the cover. The CD drve and the CD changer do not contan any parts whch can be servced by the user. For safety reasons, have any necessary servce work performed by qualfed personnel. Only use CDs, whch bear the label shown and that conform to the compact standard (IEC 60908). You can therefore only use CDs wth a maxmum thckness of 1.3 mm.! Use only CDs wth a dameter of 12 cm, do not use 8-cm CDs. An 8-cm CD adapter may cause damage to the CD changer and should not be used. CD playback locatons are Your CD drve has been desgned to play CDs whch correspond to the EN standard. If you nsert thcker data carrers, e.g. ones that have data on both sdes (one sde wth DVD data, the other sde wth audo data), they cannot be ejected and wll damage the drve. the CD drve n the COMAND operatng unt You can play audo CDs or read data from the navgaton CD. the CD changer wth 6 magazne slots.
