DESCRIPTION Ths nstructon sheet (IS) covers selecton and assembly procedures for the AMPMODU MTE connectors lsted n Fgure 1. Read ths sheet, and all referenced materal, thoroughly before assemblng and termnatng any connectors. All dmensons on ths sheet are n nches. Fgures and llustratons are for dentfcaton only and are not drawn to scale. POLARIZED ONLY The connectors feature four receptacle housng styles: plan, polarzed, latched and polarzed, and rbbed. Two wre sze ranges (22 through 26 AWG and 26 through 30 AWG) are avalable for the pn and receptacle contacts. Plan housngs are desgned to mate wth AMPMODU Breakaway Headers or wth machne--appled posts. The rbbed housng allows a modular packagng approach when usng couplng shrouds. After termnaton, the rbbed housngs can be nserted nto the sngle--row or double--row couplng shrouds to form a larger, one--pece connector. For example, two 5--poston housngs could be stacked end--to--end nsde a sngle--row couplng shroud to form a 10--poston connector. Ths 10--poston, modular connector could then be mated to a 10--poston, sngle--row AMPMODU MTE shrouded header wth latch. Smlarly, two 10--poston rbbed housngs could be stacked back--to--back nsde a double--row couplng shroud to form a 20--poston, double--row connector. Ths 20--poston, double--row connector could then be mated to any shrouded, double--row AMPMODU header wth a.318--n. matng post length and a.150--n. end dmenson. The n. end dmenson s measured from the centerlne of the last post to the nsde of the end shroud wall. Other szes of contact housngs may be combned n ths manner to form the desred number of postons. Fgure 3 shows typcal couplng shrouds, and lsts the base part numbers of the shrouds. For nformaton on specfc szes of couplng shrouds, refer to Catalog Two housng types are avalable for pn contacts. One s a fully--shrouded housng and the other s a rbbed housng. After termnaton, the rbbed housng (wth the pn contacts protrudng out of ts front) s nserted nto the panel--mount shroud. One or more rbbed housngs may be used, as s done wth the couplng shrouds. A typcal panel--mount shroud s shown n Fgure 3. The shroud can then be snapped nto a panel to form a bulkhead connector. The matng half s agan the latchng--style receptacle or the sngle--row couplng shroud. Both pn and receptacle contacts feature nsulaton--dsplacement termnaton for the conductors and are preloaded n the.100--n. centerlne, sngle--row housngs. Durng manufacturng, the contacts are partally nserted, leavng ther termnaton areas exposed at the back of the housng. Fnal contact nserton nto the housngs s done by the termnaton toolng (except when usng a hand crmpng tool or bench mount power assembly). Receptacle contacts feature a dual--beam receptacle box wth ant--overstress features, ntegral wraparound nsulaton barrel, a post stop, and a forward contact stop. The post stop prevents the matng post from dsturbng the wre bundle at the end of the IDC crmp. The forward contact stop prevents the contact from beng overnserted pror to termnaton. Pn contacts feature the wraparound nsulaton barrel and forward contact stop as well. 3 of 6

TERMINATION ING Durng termnaton, the unstrpped wre enters the two wre slots of the nsulaton dsplacement beams, and the nsulaton barrel forms around the nsulaton of the wre. Refer to Fgure 4 (receptacle contact shown). Read the nstructonal materal packaged wth the termnaton toolng BEFORE attemptng to termnate any contacts. The avalable toolng for termnatng the wres s lsted n Fgure 5. Producton requrements wll determne the toolng necessary for your applcaton. For assstance n selectng the toolng that wll best sut your needs, contact your local TE Representatve. 4. ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE Determne the wre sze to be termnated and the housng type desred by referrng to the table n Fgure 1. Obtan the requred toolng for contact termnaton and proceed as follows: 1. Ensure that the contacts are properly seated n the housng, wth the contact lockng lances vsble n the preload wndows, that the front locator stops are aganst the back of the housng, and that the contact carrer strps are properly nterlocked. RefertoFgure6. 2. Poston the housng n the toolng accordng to the nstructons provded wth the toolng. 3. Locate the wres n the toolng n accordance wth the toolng nstructons. 4. Make all of the requred termnatons. 5. Remove the termnated housng from the toolng. If usng Termnatng Head , the contact carrer strp must be bent downward and broken off after the contacts are termnated. The contacts must then be nserted the remanng dstance nto the housng untl the lockng lances engage the lockng lance wndow. 4 of 6

EXTRACTING S (Fgure 7) The contacts can be removed from the contact housngs by usng Extracton/Reset Tool Refer to Instructon Sheet IS 9453, whch s packaged wth the tool, for detaled extracton procedure. The tool s desgned to depress the lockng lance of the contact wthout deformng or overstressng the contact. Brefly, the procedure s as follows: 1. Algn the tool tp wth the back of the lockng lance cavty. 2. Insert the tool tp nto the lockng lance cavty untl the tool stop bottoms on the housng. 3. Keepng the tool n ths poston, carefully move the contact to the preload wndow of the housng. 4. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 at the preload wndow of the housng to remove the contact completely. 6. REPLACEMENT In the event that a contact becomes damaged, t may be replaced by performng the followng procedure: 1. Extract the damaged contact by followng the procedure descrbed n Paragraph 5, EXTRACTING S. 2. Obtan a preloaded contact housng wth the contact type (pn or receptacle) and wre sze (22 through 26 or 26 though 30 AWG) desred. 3. Carefully termnate the wre onto the frst poston of the contact housng by usng AMP Manual Pstol Grp Tool , equpped wth Termnatng Head Cut the carrer strp to free the frst (termnated) contact from the other contacts on the strp. The remanng contacts may be used for replacements n the future f desred. 5. Break off the replacement contact s carrer strp, and then extract the termnated replacement contact by followng the procedure descrbed n Paragraph 5, EXTRACTING S. 6. Reset the lockng lance heght as descrbed n Instructon Sheet IS Carefully nsert the replacement contact fully nto the contact housng cavty, ensurng that the lockng lance s properly orented. 5 of 6

6 8. Pull back lghtly on the wre to ensure that the contact lockng lance s engaged n the lockng lance cavty. 9. Tandem Sprng contacts may also be used for contact replacement, n accordance wth Applcaton Specfcaton KEYING AMPMODU MTE receptacle and header assembles may be keyed by usng the followng technque: A. Receptacle Assembly 1. Remove a contact from the housng poston to be keyed. Refer to Paragraph 5, EXTRACTING S, for the procedure. 2. Insert Keyng Plug nto the selected contact cavty untl the plug s lockng lance engages n the lockng lance wndow of the housng. B.
