INTRODUCTION Ths nstructon sheet covers the use of Inserton/ Extracton Tool and Replacement Tp Kts shown n Fgure 1. The tool s desgned to nsert and extract HD-22 and HD-20 contacts used n AMPLIMITE* Hgh Densty (HD) Connectors. For nformaton concernng the assembly of AMPLIMITE HD connectors, refer to the nstructon sheet packaged wth the connector. Read these nstructons thoroughly before usng the tool. See Secton 6, REVISION SUMMARY, for revson nformaton. All dmensons on ths document are n metrc unts [wth U.S. customary unts n brackets]. Fgures and llustratons are for reference only and are not drawn to scale. 2. DESCRIPTION (Fgure 1) The nserton/extracton tool conssts of a handle, a cap, sx nserton/extracton tps, a plug, and a [.050 n.] hex wrench. The handle of the tool provdes storage for the tps, plug, and hex wrench. The nserton/extracton tps convert the tool for the approprate product and are used to nsert or extract connector contacts. Each tp s color coded accordng to specfc type and wre sze. The plug s nserted nto the wdest end of the tp to prevent damage to the tp when t s secured n the tool handle. TOOL ASSEMBLY (Fgure 2) Refer to Fgure 1 and select the approprate contact, wre sze, and nserton/extracton tp. Proceed as follows: 1. Insert plug nto the wdest end of the nserton/ extracton tp. 2. Slde the nserton/extracton tp nto the end of the tool handle wth the orentaton latch postoned toward the bottom of the tool. 3. Usng the hex wrench, tghten the setscrew to secure the tp n the tool handle. 4. INSERTION/EXTRACTION PROCEDURES 4.1. Insertng A Wre Crmped Contact (Fgure 3) 1. Poston tool handle between thumb and fngertps, then place wre over the wre slot of the tp. Hold wre n ths poston wth your thumb. 3 2. Slde thumb over the wre toward the end of the tp. The wre must be postoned nsde the wre slot of the tp. 3. Slde tp over contact wre barrel untl the tp butts aganst the contact shoulder. 4. Algn contact wth the BACK of the contact cavty. Push contact straght nto the contact cavty untl the contact bottoms. 5. Remove the nserton tool; then pull back on the wre to ensure that the contact s locked nto the contact cavty Extractng A Wre Crmped Contact (Fgure 4) 1. Poston tool handle between thumb and fngertps, and algn contact wre wth the wre slot on the tp. Hold wre n ths poston wth your thumb. 2. Slde your thumb over the wre toward the end of the nserton tp. The wre must be postoned nsde the wre slot of the tp. 3. Place tp over the contact post or crmp barrel and slde the tp straght nto the contact cavty untl the tp bottoms aganst the contact shoulder. 4. Holdng the wre tght aganst the tool handle, pull back on the tool handle to extract the contact. If you experence dffculty n extractng the contact, repeat Steps 1 through Insertng A Posted Contact (Fgure 5) 1. Place the contact n the contact cavty. Do NOT push on the contact post. 2. Poston the tp over the contact post. Move the tool along the post untl the tp butts aganst the contact stablzer. Algn the tp on the stablzer as shown n Fgure Hold the tool handle, and push the contact post to make certan that the contact s locked n the cavty. 4 Back of Connector (Ref) Contact Cavty Contact Post Inserton Tp Butt Tool Tp Aganst Contact Stablzer Fgure Extractng A Posted Contact (Fgure 6) 1. Place the extracton tp over the contact post. Move the tool along the post untl the tp enters the contact cavty. 2. Algn the groove of the extracton tp wth the contact stablzer as shown n Fgure Push the tp past the stablzer and straght nto the cavty untl t bottoms. 4. For a receptacle style connector, nsert a 1.02 mm [.040 n.] dameter pn straght nto the FRONT of the contact cavty. For a plug style connector, push on matng tp of contact wth a sutable devce. 5. Apply pressure to remove the contact and tool from the contact cavty. 5. TOOL INSPECTION/REPLACEMENT (Fgure 7) Inserton/Extracton Tool s nspected before shpment. Tyco Electroncs recommends that the tool be nspected mmedately upon ts arrval to ensure that the tool has not been damaged durng shpment, and that the tool conforms to the dmensons provded n Fgure 7.Customer-replaceable parts are provded n Fgure 7.
