Tseles Dept. f Electrnics Engineering Piraeus University f Applied Sciences, Athens, Greece Abstract In this paper, there is a cmplete study f the Integrated Telematics System (ITS) in the Athens Urban Transprt Organizatin fr city buses and the cmpany's trlley Rad Transprt SA, fr passenger infrmatin, fleet management and supervisin f prject, thrugh Public Private Partnership. In specific, the structure and peratin f this system will be described and illustrated, the equipment used fr the task and all necessary passenger infrmatin applicatins assciated with this autmated system. Furthermre, a cmprehensive implementatin f a netwrk fr Interactive Bus Stps will be included, which will be used fr the first time by the traveling public. These innvative bus stps will prvide in realtime, rute-time infrmatin, ptimal rute suggestins fr passengers and news f general interest, such as weather predictin and current affairs. In the last chapter f this paper bdy, cnclusins f the advantages f using the abve Telematics System are presented that ensure safety and fast transprtatin f passengers. INTRODUCTION Telematics is defined as the technlgy that utilizes the cmbinatin f telecmmunicatins and infrmatics fr the bidirectinal transmissin f data, in rder t update and remte cntrl [1]. The term telematics derived frm the cmbinatin f Telecmmunicatins and Infrmatics wrds. These tw sectrs, applicable t wireless technlgies and cmputer systems cmprise the science f telematics. Recently, the use f the term telematics is cnnected clsely with the GPS (Glbal Psitining System) in cmbinatin with the use f cmputers and wireless telecmmunicatins fr management f vehicle fleets. The adptin f this technlgy facilitated much f the develpment f the Internet, it became mre affrdable and ecnmical fr the user [2]. One f the sectrs where telematics is applicable is the vehicle psitining assciated with fleet management f urban transprt. The term telematics is ften identified with the management f a fleet, since this is the widespread use f this technlgy. With the use f telematics in a fleet f vehicles, the cntinuus mnitring f the psitin achieved vehicles, chsing the ptimal rute and anther set f advantages [3]. II. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF STRUCTURE AND OPERATION OF THE INTEGRATED TELEMATICS SYSTEM (ITS) A. Integrated Telematics System (ITS) The Integrated Telematics System (ITS) is an Integrated Passenger and Fleet Management Infrmatin System, which is built and perated fr the Athens Urban Transprt Organizatin and mre specifically fr urban buses and the cmpany's trlley Rad Transprt SA by the Organizatin f the Athens Urban Transprt, the assciatin f cmpanies Intrasft Internatinal - Intrakat, which was awarded the prject f Urban Transprt Telematics thrugh Public Private Partnership. The cntractr, wh recmmended the special purpse Advanced Transprt Telematics (ATT) cmpany undertk the design, financing, installatin, peratin supprt, maintenance and technical management f the Integrated Passenger Infrmatin System and Fleet Management fr Rad Transprt SA t ttal ver 12 years and in additin t a netwrk f 1,000 "smart" ptical media bus stps shared acrss Athens Urban Transprt rganizatin service area. The ITS prvides the fllwing summary: Real-time mnitring f the psitin f all vehicles (buses and trlley). Crdinate fleet and mnitring f peratin. Management, mnitring and supervisin f transprt wrk. Supprt planning and rganizing transprt wrk. The integrated system is designed t help the ptimal management, mnitring, supervisin, planning supprt and rganizatin f transprt wrk f the Agency and t the imprvement f services t citizens-passengers. The design f the physical architecture f the IT infrastructure f the ITS has been given the basic design principles fr all large-scale Infrmatin Systems, aimed at prviding integrated services n a cntinuus and uninterrupted basis t end-users. 1

This cmbinatin ensures the almst cmplete lack f unit failure pint (SPOF). Select central servers High Perfrmance equipment (High-end, Enterprise Class systems), thrugh which the greatest pssible reliability and ensure rapid respnse f the verall Infrmatin System even in peak situatins. All equipment prcessr based 8-cre and 6-cre Intel Xen 64-bit. Ensure systems security, data and services thrugh the use f access cntrl mechanisms, certificatin, frmatin seat belt use VPN technlgies etc. Virtualizatin Technlgy Adptin n the layer f applicatins, based n technlgy Micrsft, Windws Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V. Thrugh these technlgies, the benefits are multiple, since creating ecnmies f scale in physical facilities and perating csts, they add an extra layer f flexibility in IT infrastructure and make the management and maintenance f the system less cumbersme and mre efficient. The architectural design f the ITS has been t create a mdern, mdular Infrmatin System which ffers the fllwing advantages: Fully cvers the functinal requirements f the prject. Based n an pen architecture that allws fr future extensins and mdificatins withut changing the basic architecture. Ensures high perfrmance and high availability f services t end-users f the infrastructure. Ensures the quality, integrity and cntinuus dispsal f such infrmatin. Ensures graduate and persnalized access t services and infrastructure data. Explits t the maximum extent, the available technlgical cutting edge platfrms in the field f infrmatin systems infrastructure, which save resurces and ptimize every mdern infrmatin system. The single system that has been implemented include: 1. Flexible, mdular 3-tier shape: This frmat allws in future expansins, replacements, embdiments and upgrades t all f Architecture layers. Briefly, these levels are the Web / Presentatin Tier: Presentatin / Access layer t the ITS, the Enterprise Applicatin Tier: Layer f implementatin f business applicatins and the Enterprise Data Tier: Strage Layer / peratinal data management. In additin t these three basic layers fr ptimal administratin and separatin f Architecture, has created a distinct sub-central layer infrastructure services (Infrastructure Tier). 2. Open Architecture shape: Based n pen applicatin develpment envirnments, t fficially dcumented interface systems, and pen data exchange standards fr infrmatin systems which pen t custmizatin. 3. High Perfrmance shape: fully cvers the specified perfrmance and respnse time requirements fr endusers f the system. 4. Reliable and Stable shape: Cnsists f central, building hardware and sftware elements that are shwn t be reliable and certified by their manufacturers, with great presence and installatins wrldwide. The prcessing pwer and data strage t equipment level prvided by Fujitsu cmpany's central servers and disk subsystems, and perating systems that can accmmdate all the applicatins belnging t the Micrsft family tp versin (Windws Server 2012 R2). Furthermre, strage, retrieval and management f infrastructure data it s dne by the Enterprise-Level, High- Perfrmance Relatinal Database Management System (RDBMS), Micrsft SQL Server The virtual machines (Virtual Machines) created mstly the Applicatin and Infrastructure tiers, based n Virtualizatin Micrsft Hyper- V platfrm. Cmpliance f the whle backup infrastructure implemented thrugh specialized HP Data Prtectr Sftware. 5. Highly Available - Durable shape: ensured by multiple mechanisms and alternative cmpnents which prvides the equipment (fault tlerance at HW level), as well as specific sftware technlgies that have been develped in the infrastructure, such as Clustering and Netwrk Lad Balancing (high-availability at SW level). These are fully supprted and wrk ptimally with ther technlgical platfrms. Especially fr Failver Clusters which are widely used in the architectural design. 6. Expandable Shape: Hrizntal and vertical scalability features (scale-ut and scale-up respectively) are prvided because f the infrmatin distributin system architecture, if this prves necessary at a future date, t meet increasing user needs r data. 7. Easy and Accessible shape: All f the ITS implementatin philsphy is based n the principle f availability f infrmatin and services thrugh a specially designed envirnment (either Web-based r a special GUI t selected wrkstatins), ffering the end user a friendly interface, based n the rle assigned t it. 8. Access prtectin infrmatin: The ITS is designed t minimize the chances f unauthrized access, search, read, input, alteratin r deletin f infrmatin hsting. Prtectin, use and maintain the value f infrmatin: The ITS is designed t prtect the value f infrmatin and knwledge within. Thus, the ttal investment is maintained and maximized, and given the necessary tls fr data recvery, even fr decisin supprt at a high level (Decisin Supprt Services, Analysis Services, Reprting Services). Finally, the tplgy architecture f the infrastructure fully cvers the basic cncepts f a mdern Infrmatin System thrugh: Discrete and cmplete separatin f the levels with the use f active netwrk devices (firewalls, switches). Use Gigabit Ethernet netwrk capacity lines and Switched Ethernet technlgy fr high perfrmance LAN cmmunicatin. Using Backup / Restre with Disk-t-Disk (D2D), Disk-t-Tape (D2T) and Disk-t-Disk-t-Tape (D2D2T) technlgies fr the redundancy backup. Use f technlgy and Mnitring / Management prducts thrugh vendr-specific tls fr each subsystem equipment [4]. B. Central Management System (CMS) The Central Management System (CMS) is the central datacenter f the IT infrastructure f the ITS. It has installed a CMS in Rad Transprt SA cmpany and hsted there all the equipment and subsystems prvide telematics services. The husing space has been tailred t meet the cmmnly accepted physical security standards fr the establishment f cmputer rms. In implementing the prject, is designed t develp the infrmatin system nly in the central datacenter, withut a separate rm r equipment fr Disaster site. C. Central Management System (CMS) It has develped a fleet management area f Telematics Vehicle installed at Rad Transprt SA Cmpany. In this cnfigured jbs fr vehicle peratrs with persnal cmputers and ther ancillary equipment (printers, vide walls). These psitins assciated with bth the vehicles and the central systems f CMS they mnitr and manage vehicles watermark data t generate three watermark images extracted. D. Supervisin Centre (SC) The Supervisin Centre (SC) is the pint where it can perate as a surveillance area f the ITS and its services. A SC installed n the Athens Urban Transprt Organizatin and within these specific jbs fr highly qualified staff that draw and prcess infrmatin, data and ther elements f the ITS cnfigured prperly. These lcatins are intercnnected with the central systems f CMS. The physical lcatin f the SC is in a separate area frm which hused the CMS and VMC. E. Telematics Dept (TD) There are ten (10) ttals Telematics Depts (TD) installed in the Rad Transprt SA cmpany and has created a special space that huses a lcal server, the necessary active netwrk equipment and tw jbs. The abve equipment is intercnnected with the central systems f CMS and with lcal Telematics Vehicles (TV) and thrugh the staff f the dept perfrms ruting and cntrl peratins f the mtin f the vehicle dept. F. Telematics Vehicle (TV) In additin t these sites which have reprted data fr the infrmatin system are als regarded Smart Bus stps and Telematics Vehicles (TV). These bearing installed terminal devices which are in cnstant cntact (wirelessly) with the central systems f CMS exchanging dynamic data between them in cnnectin with the peratinal needs f the ITS. G. Smart Bus Stp (SBS) As with TV, the Smart Bus Stps bearing installed terminal devices which are in cnstant cntact (wirelessly) with the central systems f CMS, exchanging dynamic data between them in cnnectin with the peratinal needs f the ITS. BSS6-L3 & L4 The systems BSS6-L3 and BSS6-L4 is a set f electrnic integrated circuits design, which wrk tgether seamlessly t yield linear visual infrmatin via phtdides (type LED Light Emitting Dide). Furthermre the abve electrnics take intercnnectin system with remte cntrl centers and ensure their envirnmental adaptatin. Als circuits BSS6-L3 and 3

Bring upn them all the phtdides LED as well as driving circuits and debugging. They have the ability t link tgether creating a cntinuus msaic f LED able t imprint the desired visual infrmatin. Prperly designed t achieve the maximum cntrast f light and dark areas withut psing Flickering where t be seen by humans. Mrever their design allws fr peratin in direct sunlight. 2. Athena MC Each BSS6 system includes a central cntrller design (Athena MC), which cntrls the entire system using the perating system specially and exclusively designed fr this purpse. Apart frm the individual incrprating accepts additinal electrnic circuitry designed t adapt n it as natural extensins, which are directly cntrlled thrugh apprpriate channels. In BSS6 systems are used as extensins circuits BSS6D and Athena GSM. The Athena MC circuit incrprates wn transfrmatin units f type Pwer Switching DC-DC cnverters t generate the necessary perating vltages. 3. BSS6D Circuit BSS6D undertakes the safe transfer f data frm the cntrller t the circuits f the LED screen and return errr data frm them. Additinally incrprating a sund generating system perates independently but is cntrlled directly by the central cntrller. The circuit incrprates BSSD wn transfrmatin units f type Pwer Switching DC-DC cnverters t generate the necessary perating vltages. 4. Athena GSM The Athena GSM circuit ensures the safe transfer f the cmmunicatin prtcl thrugh the mbile netwrk. There isn t autnmus and its functin is incrprated int the central cntrller perating system. The Athena GSM circuit incrprates wn transfrmatin units f type Pwer Switching DC-DC cnverters t generate the necessary perating vltages. 5. Hemera The Hemera circuit is a mnitring and prtectin circuit thrugh which passes the main system pwer supply t the pwers supplies. This circuit is integrated planning and running specially designed firmware. It filters the mains frm the prvider netwrk, insures against shrt circuits, integrates envirnmental cntrl system, cntinuusly reprts the status t the central cntrller and has the pririty rating t interrupt and restre pwer t the system if requested by the hst cntrller, r if it lses cmmunicatin with him. The pwer supplies are type AC-DC and DC-DC Switching, capable f accepting external pwer and t transfrm the necessary vltage f 5.5 Vdc, with which all the individual circuits. 6. frame / Shell prtectin f electrnic circuits The shell prtectin f electrnic circuits is a specially designed self-alleged cnstructin which is detached as a unit frm the frame, enabling the direct replacement f all cntrl circuits in minimum time. At the same time prvides the necessary envirnmental prtectin t them. In summary, the frame prvides the necessary supprt and prtectin fr the entire system and the inner shell prvides internal islatin circuits [6]. III. FUTURE EXTENSIONS AND APPLICATIONS - INTERACTIVE BUS STOP The existing telematics system upgrade capabilities and develpment f new services and applicatins, such as the implementatin f a netwrk f Interactive Bus Stps, which will be screens placed next t the bus stps. These bus stps will ffer the pssibility f interactive cmmunicatin t the passenger with the ITS. This infrmatin will be ffered in graphic tuch envirnment and will include additinal infrmatin than can be fund in printed frm at the bus stp. The infrmatin ffered in each Interactive Bus Stp will cntain line infrmatin, bus stps infrmatin and ptimal rute. At each Interactive Bus Stp will be interactive utdr tuch screen that will have anti-vandalism prtectin. The Interactive Bus stp will have cnnectin thrugh 3G mdem with CMS. The mnitr will be cnnected t the cmputer and will take data frm the db server which will be implemented infkisk web server t a virtual server. On the tuch screen will be html5 and css3 technlgy website that the public will have access t all cntent and perfrm queries in infrmatin resurce f the central system. The implementatin f these functins can be based either n a tablet-type cmputer r a cmputatinal set with discrete cpu and tuch screen as shwn belw. Fig. 2: cmputatinal set with discrete cpu The sftware f the Interactive Bus Stp will be linked via GPRS (IPsec) n the Web Server f CMS which will receive all the infrmatin necessary fr its peratin. 4

The bus stp will include a visual interface that will be used exclusively by tuch. Hme - Display next arrivals The hme page f the applicatin will shw the psitin f the bus stp n the map as well as the arrival times f the next line t bus stp. Left will appear the ptins f the applicatin and the base will shw the date, time, current weather f the city and news, which are taken frm the Athens Urban Transprt Organizatin website. The applicatin will be characterized by its large buttns and eligible parties because it will be used exclusively via the tuchscreen. Bus Stp View - Arrivals lines Chsing the tray icn, the user will be taken t bus stp infrmatin page. There will be displayed the bus stp n the map again, the passing lines and arrivals all buses passing thrugh this bus stp. The user can select ne f the lines t g n-line infrmatin. Line Infrmatin When the user selects the line which is interested in infrmatin, then the crrespnding tab with the line infrmatin is displayed. The infrmatin line will include the display f line with the bus stps n the map, and the line scheduled departure prgram. Available will be thrugh tuch selectin f any bus stp line s that the user can be transferred back t the staging infrmatin. Optimal Rute Thrugh ptimal ruting tl, the user can select departure pint and end-pint and transitin preferences as the maximum walking distance and the criteria based n which the system will return results. The start r finish selectin methds will be: Select pints f interest. Intrductin and Divisin number. Bus stp select frm list. Chice f the bus stp will be the user at this time. The criteria which the system takes int accunt will be: Maximum walking distance. Results in terms f minimum distance. Results in terms f the minimum time. The results f the ptimal rute search will return step by step and the display n the map with the rutes which the passenger will have t fllw t reach its destinatin. The display will be a large map in the applicatin center and verbal descriptin f each step f the path left f the map. Selecting each step f the verbal rute descriptin, the system will display next t the map the rute which will be fllwed. IV. CONCLUSION In the abve paper was carried ut the study f an Integrated Telematics System (ITS), which is an Integrated Passenger Infrmatin Systems and Fleet Management fr Rad Transprt SA with Public Private Partnership. Specifically, fr the installatin f a netwrk f 1,000 «smart» bus stps acrss Athens Urban Transprt Organizatin service area, fr a ttal perid f 12 years. This telematics system, perating since March 2016 in Athens, has cntributed significantly t the imprvement f services ffered t the traveling public, but als t ptimize the peratin f the Agency. The telematics system at smart bus stps infrms passengers abut the arrival times f buses. The implementatin f Interactive Bus Stps netwrk will be able t ffer the pssibility f passenger interactive cmmunicatin with the Integrated Telematics System (ITS). This infrmatin will be ffered in graphic tuch envirnment and will include additinal infrmatin than can be fund in printed frm the bus stp. The Interactive Bus Stps can be used fr the first time by the traveling public and nt nly. These innvative bus stps will prvide in real-time, rute-time infrmatin, they suggest the ptimal rute fr passengers as well as news f general interest, such as weather and current affairs. The ITS help imprve management f the mvement f buses and fleet f buses, in the mnitring f services and the ratinal management f staff and resurces. The ITS besides the many benefits available, prmtes the use f buses, reducing the use f cars, thus reducing cngestin, nise, accidents and reduce air pllutin. V.
