Web Site QBS Mission Statement To instruct, encourage, and develop the art of quilting; to share techniques, ideas, and experiences; and to extend friendship. A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello Quilters! Here it is the end of February and the Quilt Show is fast approaching. The Committee has been busy getting things ready for a terrific show in April. I hope you are finishing up your quilts in time to put them in the show. Remember you must register by March 2 (at the meeting) to be included. If your registration is ready before that, mail it to Susan Rood. We will have Kathy Graves as our speaker this month. She is a modern quilter, and I am sure she will have lots of quilts and great ideas to share with us at the meeting. And later this month, Allison is offering a workshop to make small quilts for the auction. I heard there were still a few more spots! We will also have more information at the March meeting about how you can help out with the quilt show. As you may know, it takes a lot of hands to put on this show, and there is a place for everyone to help out. We will need helpers at the entrance table, the boutique table, and raffle basket table, as well as white glove people to walk around the show and help visitors enjoy the quilts. I am sure there are other jobs that will need some help, too, and we will have sign-up sheets in March to pick your choices. If everyone takes at least one turn, we should be able to pull this off! We are working on getting helpers to hang, set up, and take down, and there will be opportunities for members to help with these jobs, too. Start spring cleaning of your sewing rooms/stash to see what you can sell at our member-to-member sale in April! Look for more info in the newsletter and at the March meeting. I m sure some of us have a few extra items we don t need. Keep stitching, Ruth Sears, President 1

2 Quilters by the Sea Calendar March 2: Modern Quilting Trunk Show with Kathy Graves Kathy Graves grew up sewing various projects with her Mom and took her first quilt class in high school. After being introduced to the joy and speed of rotary cutting in Mary Ellen Hopkins The It's Okay If You Sit On My Quilt Book, Kathy became a prolific quiltmaker, often making two tops a week. She rekindled her love of quilting after struggling with tick-borne diseases. She loves exploring modern quilting, including improvisation, modernizing traditional quilts, curved piecing, paper piecing, unique rulers, and long arm quilting. She is a member of Runamok Modern Quilt Guild, Rhode Island Modern Quilt Guild, and Rhododendron Needlers Quilt Guild. March 31: The second workshop of 2017! 7 Quilters by the Sea Meeting Minutes February 2, 2017 ~ St. Barnabas Church, Portsmouth, RI Program: Welcome our own Sandy Reynolds with her quilting journey! A big thank you to her husband Keith who has been with her throughout. Sandy told a story about her mother, who informed her she needed to learn to quilt. In 1980, Sandy made her first quilt, an Ohio star that is all hand pieced and hand quilted. When Sandy was diagnosed with breast cancer, her first thought was not that she needed surgery but that she needed to finish a quilt. After Sandy's mother passed away at the age of 93, Sandy and her sister went to Paducah. Sandy really got into applique, which is her true quilting love, and was getting more into using color in her quilts. She always has applique going; she preps it during the day and does the hand sewing in the evening. Sandy explained how her Tree of Life quilt came to be. She even showed us what she is currently working on, which is the 12 days of Christmas (although really it is only going to be the 7 days of Christmas). After a very short break, our business meeting began. President s Report: A huge thank you to Sandy for her talk. A note from the church that a small table has gone missing from the hall; if we know anything, let the church know. We are working on some of the guild's history; some of our members will be interviewed on Tuesday. The Advocacy quilts are finished and have been turned over to the Advocacy Project. We will have a special display during our quilt show. We having a nominating committee, which is Lori Bessette and Jennie Nestlerode. We had just shy of 30 people each day of the Quilt-In back in January. The Quilt-Away is coming up March 13 to 15. If you re interested in going, contact Nancy Burgess. Allison Wilbur has offered to order the Quilters Dream batting through her business. The price will be much less than retail but a little higher then wholesale, plus the cost of shipping. Treasurer s Report: The end of the year report was in the newsletter. Martha went to the bank and set up on-line banking so we will have more up-to-date numbers at the meetings. There is $13,700 in the bank accounts. Strip of the Month: Participants turned in 42 Indigo strips. Quilt Show: We are in great condition for the show. Our next meeting will be on February 27 at 5:30 at the Middletown Library. Community Service: We are always accepting placemats for Meals on Wheels. If you have a baby quilt please bring it in for March. Programs: February 4th workshop with Chris Bagley is FULL! March is the Kathy Graves trunk show. March 31 is a small art quilt workshop. April will be quilt show prep. May is a Laura Cook trunk show. Looking ahead, November 2 is going to be our own Carole Kenny, followed by a mystery quilt workshop. Membership: 53 members present tonight. We had 5 guests attending this evening. Two door prizes were passed out. Boutique of the Month: We had several items brought in. Marilyn Ferkinhoff won the door prize. Thank you for all of your raffle basket donations. Please bring in anything else you have next month. Show and Tell: Several show and tells included a finished UFO, a tree from green strips, a few small quilts, a bag, a baby quilt, and a quilt that was started at the Quilt-In. Respectfully submitted, Jennie Nestlerode 7
