A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello Quilters, I hope you enjoyed the trunk show and workshop from Timna Tarr last month. Her colorful quilts were beautiful. We are going to have another treat for you this month when Brenda Devine shares her work at our November meeting. Seeing other quilters work and learning about their experiences helps all of us to build our skills and enjoy our passion. Speaking of seeing other quilts, I hope you were able to attend the Ninigret Quilters show in Westerly this month. I had a great time and saw some other QBS members there as well. Thank you so much for your feedback on the surveys we did last month. You can read more about the ideas and responses in this newsletter. As of today we are still looking for a volunteer to lead the marketing of the raffle quilt and two people to chair the quilt show. Hopefully, by the time we meet in November, we will have those jobs filled. Contact Ruth if you are interested in doing one of these. Fall is definitely in the air. It makes me think of bright colors and fresh air as Mother Nature shows off before everything turns to neutrals for the winter. Does your quilting reflect the world around you? See you November 5th. Ruth Sears, President 1

5 QBS needs someone to step up! The raffle quilt is completed, the name has been chosen. We have someone willing to deliver the quilt to various shops to be shown and for tickets to be sold. Carol Garvey, who took the lead role in marketing the quilt last time, has organized information from the last three raffle quilts to help the next person do this job. The only thing we need now is someone willing to do it. The job involves filling out some forms to get permission to hold the raffle, ordering tickets and keeping track of where the tickets are and the money turned in when they are sold. The board members will help you get the tickets ready for members to sell, and will help with questions. This needs to start right away so we can start selling tickets. This is a major fundraiser for the guild and we hope everyone will help with selling or buying the tickets. Please contact Ruth if you are willing to take this on, for the benefit of the guild and our members. October Show and Tell 5

6 Quilters by the Sea Meeting Minutes October 1, 2015 ~ St. Barnabas Church, Portsmouth, RI Meeting began at 7 p.m., President Ruth Sears presiding. Announcements: Shirley Saulnier's family donated her fabric to the guild. It has been distributed among community service projects, boutique items, and Shirley's Table, to name a few. Please visit Shirley's Table to get a piece of her collection such as an unfinished project or a piece of fabric. Treasurer: As of the end of August we have $12,922. Pictures: If you do not want you pictures on the web, please sign the green slip of paper. Membership: 59 members present; no new members tonight and no guests. Prizes: Sara Jane Tirpaeck and Joan Angel won the door prizes this evening. Gay Gullison won 64 orange strips in the Strip of the Month drawing. Community Service: Barbara McNeilly, Betty Davis, Donna Chaves - door prizes for place mats. We will revisit community service after the holidays. Boutique Item: Each month Lori and Carol will present a boutique item of the month for the boutique table for our quilt show. Please bring back a mug rug for November. Quilt Away: Nov 2-4; please call by this Monday (10/5). We need to have 12 rooms reserved. Programs: In November, Brenda Devine will be joining us. December is our holiday party, January is our Quilt-In starting Thursday the 7th and ending Saturday the 8th. In February, Barbra Becker will be joining us, in March Meliane Johnston and Joan Blade Johnston will be speaking, in April Judy Lancaster will be with us, and in May Judy Messenger will have a trunk show. June will be an ice cream social before we break for the summer. Ruth has a survey for members to fill out before they leave. Ruth also had a very rough budget of what is coming in and what is going out. Show and Tell: Ruth Sears with blocks from Shirley's Table, Judy Ferreira, Barbara Carnes, Donna Chaves, Norma Hogan, Laurel Niemi, Jean Drooger, and Kathy Little shared their work. Program: Timna Tarr has a degree in art history and a grandmother who was a quilter. Two questions she is always asked: (1) Where does your name come from? (A) It s an old Hebrew name, although she is not Jewish. (2) How did you start quilting? (A) Mom and Grandma were both quilters, but she hated sewing when little. She made her first quilt for her first husband who taught geometry and wanted to show students geometry with a quilt. After she had a baby, she took a hiatus from quilting then started appliqueing circles. Timna uses the Olfa circle cutter to cut her circles. She dislikes borders because she hates quilting them. Timna will make a certain block and when she is tired of making that particular block, she puts the quilt together. Timna showed several quilts from her collection; many of her quilts have appeared in various magazines. Small improvisational quilting is what Timna will be teaching at the workshop. Adjourned at 8:40 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Jennie Nestlerode, Secretary 6

7 Member Surveys, October 2015 There were surveys from just about everyone who attended the meeting in October! What a great response; thank you so much for taking the time to offer suggestions, give feedback on activities, and sign up to help out with our projects. When I fill out a survey, I always wonder what the results of all the answers were, so I will give a summary here for you. The largest numbers of members have indicated they want to have the 2016 quilt show in much the same way as the ones we have done recently. Many people also indicated they would help out or take responsibility for one of the subcommittees on the show, which is great. If we can find people willing to take the lead on this show committee, we will move forward with the planning for our next show. The sale of raffle tickets was a mixed response. About 12 people were willing to help but no one offered to organize and manage the sale of tickets. About 15 offered to pay higher dues in lieu of buying the tickets or selling them to others. These are small numbers considering we had almost 60 surveys, so I am hoping we can get more support for this important fund raiser as the year goes on. In the section indicating the activities that are most important to members, the top three were trunk shows and workshops by nationally known quilters, demonstrations and/or trunk shows by members or local quilters, and show and tell at meetings. Also showing a strong following were BOM/FOM/Idea of the month, community service projects, and sharing quilting ideas at meetings. We will continue to offer these at meetings and hope the members continue to participate. Another idea that members liked was participating in a weekend trip to visit a quilt show, with about 20 people showing an interest. Unfortunately, no one offered to help organize this, so hopefully we can work on this idea in the future. Some people supported the idea of a flea market or yard sale to support the guild, held at one of our meetings. Some comments included concerns about how the guild is spending the money we have, as well as the suggestion that group events should be paid for by the members in the group, not the guild treasury, for example, the Quilt Away, Shop Hop, and BOM activities. Thanks to everyone who participated in the surveys. We will try to continue making plans for the things you want. Ruth Sears, for the QBS Board Timna started as a traditional quilter......but by the end of the October meeting, she had us running in circles! 7
