A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT 1 Hello Quilters! Spring is here, although today the wind is whistling around my house and the temperatures are still in the 30 s, so I stay inside and sew some more! I hope you have had time to finish those quilts headed for the show, as that deadline is fast approaching. If you still need to finish a binding or add a label, bring it along to the meeting and work on that while you listen. We will be presenting the new slate of officers at the April meeting and you will have the opportunity to vote on them at our annual meeting in May. I look forward to introducing you to the people who have stepped up to lead Quilters by the Sea for the next two years. We will have the videos from the recent interviews available for watching at the meeting in April. Some of you have made yo-yo s or folded hexagon flowers for the quilt show gifts, and we hope you will spend some time during the meeting completing those so they will be ready to offer our visitors. We probably will have some information related to the show to share, as well as another opportunity to volunteer to help out with the show. Also in April we have some member/vendors coming to offer items you might be interested in purchasing. Please bring cash or checks for this as they may not be able to accommodate credit cards for sales. There s a lot going on, so hope we see you at the April meeting. Keep stitching, Ruth Sears, President

Volunteer sign-up sheet will be at the April meeting. We still need quite a few White-Glove Wandas. (Ed.: Yes, I just made up that name. Because they wear white gloves. And they wanda around the show. I m hoping it catches on.) Program Ads due april 6 Although the program ad form says ads are due April 1, we are extending the deadline so you can bring them with you to the April 6 meeting. If you know someone who might like to advertise in our quilt show program, please use the ad form at the end of this newsletter. Program ads are an inexpensive way for a business to reach our targeted audience and show their support for the community! Businesses are welcome, but anyone who d like to support the guild can take out an ad. This is a nice way to honor a loved one or send a thank-you message. In past years, program ads have about covered the cost of printing the program! (But we re not close to doing that yet this year ) Thank you! ~ Susan and Janet Hard work keeps the wrinkles out of the mind and spirit. ~ Helena Rubinstein Small Quilts, etc. Still Needed for the Silent Auction at the Show! The Silent Auction donation deadline for our Spring into Quilts show is April 15. We are collecting small quilts (no larger than 24 x 24 ), table runners, and other items such as American Girl doll clothes. All proceeds will be donated to the New England Quilt Museum. You can give your donation to any member of the committee: Joan Coyle, Marilyn Ferkinhoff, Aggie Keeney, Loretta Krebel, Kathy Little, or Ann Zvanovec. Funds raised by a SMALL quilt can contribute in a BIG way to the New England Quilt Museum! 4
To Ensure a Good Time Is Had by All ( and that We All Live Happily Ever After, or At Least Until Next Month) Please put your cell phone on vibrate or silent mode during meetings. If you need to take a call or speak with another member during a meeting, please step into the hallway outside. None of us wants to miss a great program, even when we re sick. But, for goodness sake, please stay home and get some rest. None of us wants to be known as the Typhoid Mary of the quilt guild either. Your Board and fellow members will thank you! You don t need to be a famous actress to take center stage at the quilt show! (Um, Joanne, you made that blouse yourself, didn t you? And by the way, Judy other side! Even Lucy got that part right...) QUILTERS BY THE SEA SPRING INTO QUILTS SHOW MEMBER DEMONSTRATIONS SIGN UP NOW! 11:00 A.M. 3:00 P.M. APRIL 22 (SAT.) & APRIL 23 (SUN.) ½-hour, 1-hour, or 2-hour demo ~ You decide! Please let me know if you would like to demonstrate something at the Demonstration Booth during the show. Indicate the day(s) and length of time that would best suit your needs and I will try to make a schedule convenient for all. I will print it up on a poster at the door. Thank you! ~ Christine Bagley 5
Opportunity If you re looking for a significant volunteer position with a wonderful organization, the Quilts of Valor Foundation is seeking a State Coordinator for the state of Rhode Island. This is a major commitment (at least half-time), but you would be facilitating the collection and distribution of quilts to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. This organization has distributed over 158,000 quilts so far to those who are serving and have served our country. If you think you might be up to this rewarding challenge, Catherine for detailed information on the position and application materials. Road Trip! May 6 Northern Star Quilters Guild The World of Quilts Western Connecticut State University Danbury, CT The World of Quilts show, first held in 1989, was the impetus for the formation of the Northern Star Quilters Guild. What started as a small show to raise money to support the local AFS organization has grown into large event that helps promote the art of quilting. The World of Quilts show is held the first weekend in May of each year. The show typically has on display more than 300 quilts which include about 200 registered quilts, pieces by a nationally recognized invitation quilter, works from the Guild s Special Interest Groups (SIGs), as well as quilts made during the year as part of NSQG s activities. Additionally, there are 30+ vendors at the show, demonstrations, and presentations by our keynote speaker. The World of Quilts show helps the Guild maintain its purpose of promoting interest in and encouraging participation in the art of quilting, while stimulating and coordinating the efforts and talents of individuals interested in quilting. Funds raised at the Show support the educational activities of the Guild that in turn help to keep the art of quilting flourishing. ( $58 fee includes discounted admission to the show. Sign up at this month s meeting! 6

Quilters by the Sea Meeting Minutes March 2, 2017 ~ St. Barnabas Church, Portsmouth, RI Program: Welcome Kathy Graves! Tonight we are going to explore what makes a quilt modern: minimalism, negative space, improvisation, use of bold colors and graphics. Negative space and minimalism typically go together on modern quilts. Most modern quilts use the rule of thirds or golden ration. Modern quilters use improv by breaking traditional rules of quilting. Modern quilts often use solid colors and don't use primary colors. Modern quilters start with traditional block and make changes, which is called modern traditionalism. An alternative grid gives you a different way to put together blocks and quilts. Kathy went over several ways of putting modern quilts together, including paneling and background inflow. She showed us the second quilt she ever made, several modern quilts, a few traditional quilts, and a few projects in the making. After a short break our business meeting began. President s Report: Thank you, Kathy! We have had the batting offer out for two months and so far no one has put in a order. Our Nominating Committee is still looking for a few positions. Please consider being an officer. Treasurer s Report: We have $13,999 in the two accounts. Quilt Show: Susan said we had 82 quilts registered when she left the house, and she received several more tonight. Next month we will be putting together yo-yo flower pins for our door favors; please bring in your finished yo-yo's next month. There is a sign-up sheet in the back to volunteer during the show. There are posters and postcards in the back for members to take and disburse around town. Programs: April will mainly be getting ready for the show. We also will have tables available for members to vend there own goods. May is the Laura Cook trunk show. June will be our very own Flamingos. The bus trip to the Danbury, CT, quilt show is May 6. See Sarah Sullivan to sign up. The cost of the trip is $58, which includes admission (they are charging us $8 instead of $10). Membership: Door prizes went to Loretta Davis and Jennie Nestlerode. Strip of the Month: 38 violet strips went to Noreen Kissell. Community Service: We have three or four baby quilts for Gabriel s Angels plus a few Meals on Wheels placemats this month. Show and Tell: Two One-Block Wonder quilts from Chris s workshop, two mystery quilts, a small quilt, and a finished UFO this month. Respectfully submitted, Jennie Nestlerode One of the things I learned the hard way was that it doesn't pay to get discouraged. Keeping busy and making optimism a way of life can restore faith in yourself. ~ Lucille Ball 8
