Hello All, A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Because I am a new member of the Guild, I thought I would introduce myself to those of you whom I have not met yet. I am a native Rhode Islander, but I moved when I was 19 to finish college in California. In California, I worked as a tax CPA, met my husband, and then moved to Florida when we were first married. We returned to California, raised five children who all went to college on the East coast, and then decided to make our way back East to be closer to our families. We lived outside Philadelphia for a year, then settled in Barrington where I grew up. My mother taught me to sew when I was about eight years old. Most of my sewing experience was garment sewing until about four years ago, when I attended the San Francisco Quilt Guild s show and then I was hooked. Because this is my third quilt guild, I have lots of experience in being new to a guild but will be depending upon longtime members to share their expertise. I am very grateful that members of Quilters by the Sea chatted me up at my first meeting and made me feel welcome. Fortunately for me, the quilt show provided ample opportunity to work with other members truly the best way to get to know people in the guild. I promise to make every effort to welcome new members. I also promise to ask you to get involved to the extent you are able. With a mix of new and long-time members of QBS on the board, I am hoping to mix in some fresh ideas with the successes of the past. Thank you, Gail 1

October 5: Allison Wilbur Trunk Show ~ Japan: Tradition and Inspiration Delve deep into the Japanese aesthetic and learn about the many different traditional textile traditions including cotton yukatas, silk obis and kimonos, shibori dyeing, sashiko stitching, and ikat woven indigos. See an array of quilts which incorporate these beautiful fabrics and motifs and entice you to step into the world of Japaneseinspired quilting. November 2: Carole Kenney ~ The I'll Never Be Sandy Reynolds Trunk Show November 4: Mystery Quilt Workshop (4th workshop of 2017!) Don t forget to sign up! December 7: Holiday Get-Together Appetizers and desserts provided by the guild members. Beverages will be provided by the guild. Thanks for your support! Lori and Sarah Hello Quilters, A MESSAGE FROM RUTH As this is my last letter as President, I most importantly want to thank all of you who have participated in the activities we have done over the past two years. One of my goals when I began was to build more of a community within the guild by getting to know each other better, sharing ideas, working together for the benefit of all, and in general enjoying our quilting together. I tried to encourage opportunities for activities that would engage members, some of them traditional and also trying a few different means to the end. The members of the board have worked hard to bring programs and other activities that enhance your experience in the guild, and I appreciate all that they have done. As I look forward, I am enthusiastic about new leadership and excited to learn what lies ahead. Quilters by the Sea has provided me with friendship, encouragement, and an education which has enriched my life, for which I am grateful. Thanks so much for this experience. Keep stitching, Ruth Sears 2
3 TREASURER S REPORT ~ Martha Munkacsy, Treasurer Strip of the Month by CraB June White(ish) TWO cotton 2 ½ x 42 strips of fabric Questions? Christine Bagley. Total Members = 104 May Attendance: Current Members = 53 New Members = 3 Guests = 6 Total = 62 WE ALL GOTTA PAY OUR DUES: Please remember to pay your annual membership dues at the June meeting ($35). We had a total of 10 new members register between the quilt show and the May meeting. Welcome to all! ~ Carol 3
4 A Note of Thanks The recent loss of my husband has prompted so many kind acts of support from my friends at QBS. Thank you so much for your sympathy cards, your attendance at his funeral, or perhaps your thoughts and prayers. Many, many thanks, Mary Craveiro Sunshine and Shadows If you have any member news that requires a bit of sunshine, please let me know by either phone or . ~ Carol McOsker You don t have to pack anything, but... We are moving in September! Starting in September, our monthly meetings will no longer be held at St. Barnabas, but will take place at St. Philomena School. The school is just 2 miles from the church, about 5 to 10 minutes by car. There will be a full map and directions in the September newsletter. The net income for the quilt show is $3,355. Thanks to everyone who made the show a success! ~ Janet and Susan Ruth will be making an order for Quilters Dream batting in June, so if you would like to order something, contact her by phone or to find out the exact (discounted!) price of the items you want and then bring the money to the June meeting. Ruth will contact you when the items come in to arrange delivery or pick-up. 4
5 Don t let your Un-Finished Object turn into an Unwelcome Financial Onus! There s no time left to regret all those Unseized Free-time Opportunities. You may have had some Unusual Fat-quarter Options to choose from, which could explain the apparently Unplanned Fabric Organization in your project. Certainly, there were difficult moments, like the Unfortunate Feed-dog Oversight and the Unholy Finger Owie. Your Uneven Free-motion Outlines may not look exactly as you had imagined, and it s too bad you didn t avoid that Unhappy Fusible Oopsy. But your Unwavering Feverish Obsession with the Ultimate Fulfillment Objective (fueled by much Unheated Frankfurter Overeating) kept you going. Uproarious Family Occasions failed to distract you, and Unhelpful Friends Opinions didn t discourage you. Even discovering the block you d sewn in Upside-down Facing Opposite was an Unanticipatedly Feeble Obstacle. And now you re ready for an Uplifting Fervent Ovation because...your Un-Finished Object is done! Or maybe it isn t. In which case, TIME S UP! You ll need to pony up your pledge in the form of cold, hard cash. Who finished? Who didn t? We ll find out next week at The UFO Challenge Wrap-Up! Out and About Monthly Quilters Get-Together: Quilting at the Middletown Public Library takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month (except holidays). Dates for the rest of 2017 are 6/22, 7/27, 8/24, 9/28, 10/26, 11/16, and 12/14. 6 Community Service End-of-Year Report The following programs were all ongoing for the entire year: Meals on Wheels: Provided placemats to be given to new clients when they receive Meals on Wheels. The size of the placemats is 17 x 12; no holiday fabric please. So far I have 40 hoping this amount goes up at the June meeting. Gabriels's Angels: A baby shower will be held at St. Luke's Parish in Barrington where all sorts of baby items will be available for pregnant women in need. We donated 16 quilts. Lucy's Hearth: We donated four baby quilts for a baby shower for women in need. Holly Charrette House: Home for women veterans in Johnston, RI. This is temporary housing until permeant housing is available. We will donate four quilts. Disaster Closet: Over the past couple of years we have given quilts to families who have lost their homes to a fire. This year we gave five quilts to a family whose six-year-old little boy died in a house fire. We have two quilts to go to the disaster closet, plus one baby quilt. I would love to end this year for Community Service for a final request for placemats for Meals on Wheels. I know that so many of you are more than generous with your time and talent for your favorite charity; this request is for a guild project. It would be great if we could surpass last year s numbers! Use your scraps and your imagination! Many thanks for all your contributions to our various community service projects. ~ Noreen 6
7 Quilters by the Sea Meeting Minutes May 4, 2017 ~ St. Barnabas Church, Portsmouth, RI Program: Welcome, Laura Cook! Laura learned to sew from her mother and made her first quilt before heading off to college, then picked up quilting again after college. Laura enjoys making art watercolor quilts versus large bed quilts. When her kids were small, so were her quilts. Laura likes to make 4-inch squares mainly because she has a 4-inch ruler. Laura showed us a variety of quilts using small scraps of fabric. She explained her process for turning a photograph into a pattern, then into a quilt. Laura has been entering the Hoffman Challenge since 1997, but hasn't entered every year; there was gap after her first child was born. Laura showed us several of the quilts she has made over the years, and noted she has not always liked the fabric that was chosen. She showed us some pictures of how she made her 2015 challenge quilt, including the picture that inspired the quilt. We also saw pictures only of her 2016 quilt because it is still traveling. Laura showed us this year s fabric and some pictures of graffiti she saw while in New York that were her first inspiration. After her dad passed away, her brother gave her a picture of her dad in black and white, and she showed us what she has so far for this year. After a short break our business meeting began. President: A BIG thank you to all who helped with the quilt show. Treasurer's Report: As of the end of April, we have $20, but haven't paid all our bills yet from the show. Martha read her annual report. Community Service: Noreen listed how many quilts and placemats we have donated this year. Quilt Show: Janet said she thought the mission of the guild was well said at our show. Viewer s Choice Awards: Ten awards were handed out for I quilted it myself. Two handquilted awards were presented, along with five professionally quilted awards. The number one quilt that received the most votes was one of Sandy Reynolds. Programs: Don't forget that next month you need your checkbook or your finished UFO project. Also next month is our very own Flamingos and an ice cream social. Lori gave a quick run down for the fall. Membership: Seven new members signed up at the show and several new members joined tonight. 53 members present tonight and several guests. Two door prizes awarded this evening. Strip of the Month: 34 black strips were won by Pat Giarrusso. Annual Meeting: Election was held for the following slate of officers: President, Gail Palazzolo; Vice President, Susan Rood; Secretary, Veronica Mays; Treasurer, Sue Bates. There was a unanimous vote to approve the new board. Our new board members each spoke briefly. Announcements: Anyone who would like to take over Hospitality, see Donna Bozeman. If you would like to organize Strip of the Month, see Chris Bagley. Show and Tell: We had several show and tell items this month. Respectfully submitted, Jennie Nestlerode Spring is when you feel like whistling even with a shoe full of slush. ~ Doug Larson In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt. ~ Margaret Atwood 7
